Specialties
Storey Framing specializes in conservation framing, which is the use of acid free materials which will do no harm to artwork, proper hinging of artwork with either Japanese paper hinges and wheat starch paste, or corner pockets, and glazing choices which protect artwork from damage from ultraviolet light or damage from glass breakage. We also specialize in hand finished hardwood frames and reproduction antique frames in many different finishes, often in 23 or 18 karat gold leaf or 12 karat gold leaf (white gold), and often hand carved ornamentation. We have been in business since 1974.
History
Established in 1974.
Jim Storey learned picture framing during high school, working after school and weekends at a frame shop in Palo Alto. He also worked at the frame shop during summers while in college at U.C. Berkeley studying art. After getting his Masters Degree in Sculpture at U.C. and working at a number of unsatisfying jobs, he opened Storey Framing in 1974. He worked alone for a year, then had part time help for a few years. Since about 1980, Storey Framing has operated with a staff of three, one person building and hand finishing frames, the other two designing framing, hinging artwork, cutting mats, acrylic, and glass, and installing artwork into frames.
