Courtyard Austin South

I really enjoyed my stay at the Courtyard by Marriott. Everything is extremely clean in this hotel and the staff is ready to help with almost any request you can think of. They have complimentary citrus water in the lobby ²⁴⁄₇ and some nights they even have cookies for you to enjoy. The staff is what made this stay exceptional. Stephen, Paige, and Amanda all greeted me with a smile and seemed genuinely interested in talking with me and getting to know me better. This attitude really helped as I was staying at their property for a few weeks for work. It made it feel like home! I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is interested.

This hotel is due for a remodel. The carpet is smelly and the AC units are loud. I was there for 4 nights and experienced fire alarms on 2 separate occasions. I was quite surprised given that most Courtyards are relatively clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would not stay here again.

Great staff. Updated property. Good location. Love the Bistro breakfast choices & Starbucks coffee to get your morning started off on the right foot!
The only drawback is the ²⁴⁄₇ road noise from I-​35. It is significant, all night long. Ask for a room on the back side of the property — it’s slightly quieter.
I’d come back!

No refrigerator in the room? Really?

We stayed 3 nights in late December 2014. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. They anticipated some of our needs (extra sheets and blankets for sofa beds) and met them without asking. Stephen, assistant general manager went over and above.
We had a King Suite and it was nice and roomy for our family of 4.

The boyfriend and I have stayed at most of the Marriott hotels in this little stretch of Marriott-​land here on 35, just south of Ben E White.
This was, however, our first time at the Courtyard. We were down in Austin for a Valentine’s Weekend/​birthday do-​over, and kind of wanted to mix up where we were staying, so we initially were looking to stay in downtown rather than this strip of Marriotts, but price and availability had us here.
We did change things up in that we stayed at this Courtyard and we got a suite. Oooo fancy. We even had a little balcony. We didn’t go out there once, but we had it!
We were here all weekend, and it was nice. The bed was comfortable, and the entire room was quite spacious.
The downside to Courtyard, of course, is that unlike Springhill and Fairfield, there is no free breakfast. And I’m a sucker for free breakfast. They did have a little café that offered breakfast (and coffee, etc), and of course their little nook off to the side of the front desk where you can buy a $ 2 bottle of soda.
Overall, it was a good stay. Everyone was very friendly, the room was sufficient, and we got a reasonable deal– even though it was Valentine’s weekend. Saturday night, though, there was NO place to park, so they were clearly full to capacity. We had to park over by the other Marriott next door.
Next time, though, we’ll probably stick to Springhill or Fairfield OR we’ll super splurge and stay at the Courtyard in downtown (I know that my hopes of one day staying at the Driskill are sure to be dashed, as I am far far FAR too cheap to drop $ 500 on one night– even if there IS the possibility of seeing a ghost).
I’d say you usually can’t go horribly wrong with any of the Marriotts in this strip.

Ups and downs.
Ups: clean, comfortable facility. Room was great– more than met my needs for professional travel. Pool looked nice though I didn’t have time to go in. They have a small café area and you can grab a glass of wine or beer after a long day. Staff was excellent– polite, professional, efficient.
Mehs: tiny gym (2 treadmills and an elliptical, plus weights). It was passable but I’ve seen better. Hotel location is right on a major highway. I had no issues with noise but there’s really nowhere to go within walking distance other than a bunch of other Marriott-​chain hotels. One restaurant and a gas station/​convenience store– that’s it.
Less than stellar: the shuttle. They say they share it with the «full service» Marriott a couple parking lots over, but it seemed to me more like they’re the annoying younger sibling constantly trying to bum rides off the older sibling with the driver’s license. I chose this hotel specifically for the shuttle, since my conference was downtown. But I definitely had issues, both getting downtown and getting back at night.
I’d say about 60−70% of the time I was picked up on time, no problem. The other times, I waited up to 40 minutes for a ride that was promised to be available in 10 minutes or less. At the downtown location, I noticed other guests milling around the lobby, waiting and complaining, too. And I had to wait both leaving the courtyard south (once) and leaving the courtyard downtown to come back (a few times). If you ask the staff at the courtyard south desk they’ll tell you they have to make sure there’s room because it’s not really their shuttle– it belongs to the main Marriott. I was able to get on the list going out, but the wait getting back (where there is no list — you just wait) got old. To me this whole situation became frustrating and ridiculous. Either you offer the service or you don’t– and if it’s going to be a problem part of the time, don’t list it as a service you offer because customers will believe you and depend on it. This system definitely requires improvement. The drivers were nice and offered some helpful hints about where to go and what to do while in town.
All in all, it worked out, but not without some long waits and frustration.

Staff is friendly and professional, rooms are a bit dated but overall a good and friendly experience

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights Tues-​Fri (so a time that shouldn’t be necessarily busy). The price was great when booking through Orbitz, especially for the room size which was a suite (and one of their most upgraded rooms).
The hotel has pretty good amenities– relatively inexpensive breakfast options, a nice lobby, indoor pool & hot tub, some rod have balconies.
But, I would likely suggest trying somewhere else. Even though the hotel was only at maybe 25% occupancy there was a family with small children put above us who were SO loud ALL the time. We complained over and over and the front desk person just shrugged us off or would try to call them and they wouldn’t answer. It was incredibly annoying. & I mean a LOT of noise. Not just footsteps.
Their wifi is HORRIBLE! Very slow and not dependable.
Finally, our bathroom had black mold all over the ceiling. It was gross and if I had children, I would have changed hotels.

1^st I want to compliment Melissa, who greeted me and was warm and took quick care and got me checked in ASAP. The hotel fit my needs to a tee and with free breakfast, hard to beat. The room’s views aren’t great, but much of this city has construction, so views are tough period. The room is spacious for 2, but if you had 3 or more forget about it, need to ask for a larger room. Location is very good, near tons of hang out places, bars, restaurants and the convention center. Plus it’s a Marriott, hard to go wrong. I will definitely stay at this place again on my next visit to the great city of Austin.

Front of House staff is super rude, cannot remember her name. Our toilette had an engine in it. Thought we were going to get sucked in every time. Internet was shady. Loud place. Kind of a pain to get to.

Do not mess with my bank account.
Charge for one night: 190.00 when I was told 160.00. Then, 190.00 comes out of my card… AND 160.00 on the same day.
When I call to ask WTH is going on, I’m told that I stayed for two nights. Please tell me more about myself — what am I wearing? What did I have for breakfast? Where the fuck am I right now?
So after arguing with me over the phone about whether or not I was at their hotel after I had checked out and left… they tell me they’ll «charge me 162.22» — Um… you’ve already charged me $ 350.00 — so now are you telling me you’re going to run a third charge on my card?
The sweet imbecile on the phone didn’t know how to answer this. Fumbled and said that they’d REFUND 162.22 but couldn’t answer why the hell he wasn’t going to refund the $ 190.00 instead.
Of course this will take 2 – 3 business days to process, so I’m out the full two charges until then. And of course the manager «wasn’t in» and «will call me back if I leave him a voicemail».
I never return to a place that will fraudulently draft my bank account and then are too incompetent to fix it immediately.

Update: The manager did call me back. He was apologetic, very nice and personable and I appreciate that. I will give them credit for that, he is emailing my receipts to me to show that everything was taken care of.
I’m not upgrading stars because money was charged to my card for two nights as their error and I’m not okay with a mistake like that. But I will give them credit for remedying it.
So, thanks for that.

This place gets 3 stars for the 2 parts of it I actually experienced, the lobby and the spa. The lobby is pretty damn nice and made me think that the spa was going to be top notch. However, I was disappointed to find out that the spa left a lot to be desired. It smelled like a brothel (think heavy chlorine smell) and was not hot enough. It was also not very deep. I am 6’2″ and it barely went up to my twigs and berries. I had to sit on the very bottom part. Step it up! Match the spa with the nice lobby and BAM, got yourself a winner!

Friendly staff, tired rooms.
Old fixtures, old TV, everything.
No wet bar, but beers available from front desk.

Perhaps not the best hotel to choose if you want to be in the thick of things for SXSW, but a way reasonable and pleasant stay nonetheless! This hotel is about three miles and a $ 14 Austin Cab ride away from the Austin Convention Center. It’s right on I-​35, so it has a steady sound and stream of traffic going by, but it’s not too noisy.
The rooms are clean, lack mini bars, and the staff is super friendly. There’s a pool and hot tub. You can call the front desk to request a cab for the time you want. There’s also a restaurant downstairs, which I’ve yet to try. But breakfast yesterday sure smelled good!
But the clincher is this: rooms run $ 109/​$ 119 a night versus the 100%-plus higher prices closer downtown. That’s appealing, even if you have to make some effort to go to and fro at each end of the day. Not a bad option.
