Cessnock Subway Station

What do you say about Glasgow’s subway let alone this station
It’s clean and had someone to buy a ticket off
Nothing amazing nothing terrible
Just as it is … Looks like it should smell of stale pee but doesn’t
Be nice if it was brighter, cleaner looking, more modern but that’s not gonna happen

Cessnock subway is a useful stop for the Glasgow Science Centre, Pacific Quay (such as the BBC and hotels) and is also handy for a southside Nextbike stop (this is the local public bike hire scheme in Glasgow).
The subway is still decorated with the anniversary drawings from 1996 when they commissioned a series of artworks at each station, here you can view the architectural masterpiece by Alexander Greek Thomson– Walmer Crescent (private houses, but a nice crescent of stone houses with pretty stone carvings on).

I don’t know what it is about some subway stations but some of them suck and some of them are pretty darn cool ~ Cessnock falls into the latter category thankfully.
My first visit to Cessnock subway was quite a while ago (it was still referred to as the ‘underground’ then…) and my purpose for alighting at Cessnock was to visit a dear friend of mine who lived only a hop, skip & stumble from Cessnock’s fair steps. Instantly I fell for (not over, for once) the beautiful Cessnock signage. Now I have only recently found out that that Cessnock is the only subway left that still retains its ‘pre-​modernisation livery and signage’ (thank you Wiki!) That will be the reason why it appeals to me so ~ the signage is beautiful. I bet most folk don’t even notice or take time to stop & wonder at it’s beauty *sigh*
Cessnock was opened in 1896 so that wee subway has been around a loooong time, shoogling folk from Cessnock to Buchanan Street and the like. It must be tired, poor thing.
I mainly go to Cessnock now as it is the closest subway to Bellahouston Park/​Leisure Centre/​Palace of Art, being only a ¹⁵⁄₂₀ min walk or short bus journey away.
If ever you are at Cessnock subway then please take a minute to stop, look & appreciate it’s beautiful signage, metal arch & steps before it is no longer… they have already removed one of the metal arches and there is apparently plans to do so with the other. Such a shame.

Cessnock underground is a great starting place if your in the mood to tour the city as you can get an explorer ticket (the equivalent to an all day ticket on the bus) so you can get on and off wherever you like as many times as you like. The Cessnock station is located near to the Science center and the BBC and STV buildings. The station is surrounded by shops which is convenient! Quick and easy way to get to where you want to go! Subs are every 6 – 10 minutes depending on the time of day.

Cessnock subway baffles me. I should regularly use this route for employment purposes, but it’s not as close to my work as it proclaims!
It’s a functional tube station close to many new fangled attractions by the Clydeside such as the Science Centre. It’s accessible for the tall ship and Waverley, and alight here for BBC and STV Studios. My, our river is rather swanky these days!
Cessnock is fairly quiet during the day and early evening, but what I’ve realised from testing walking/​running/​cycling routes is that it isn’t that much closer to Clydeside stuff as the other stations. Govan, Kinning Park and even Ibrox may seem more awkwardly placed, but they’re just as close to the Clyde depending on the walking route you take towards the river.
But for Paisley Road West and such, it’s fairly central. And I have to say, I love their old entrance sign!

A fairly run of the mill subway stop, Cessnock can be a little shady at night on account of the plethora of less than savoury drinking establishments nearby.
However, this is a handy stop for the science centre and also for those looking to avoid the queues at Ibrox on matchdays.

This tube stop advertises itself as being close to the Glasgow Science Centre, and is in close proximity to the STV and BBC buildings as well.
They are building a new music auditorium down near SECC that should be up and running soonish which might make this a more popular stop.
I quite enjoy the long stroll through the huge overpass at the Exhibition Centre train station before heading down that way to be honest, so I rarely go to this tube stop.

Cessnock tube is the stop for the Science Centre and sits on the busy residential street of Paisley Road West. It is well-​used by Rangers supporters as well, either to avoid the queues at nearby Ibrox tube or to go to the pubs along the street.
The small entrance and island platform is suitable for Cessnock’s patronage. If only Paisley Road West wasn’t such a dump it would be better used. It may not be as run down as Ibrox but trust me, this isn’t what people mean when they talk about Glasgow’s «posh West End».

Close to the new STV and BBC buildings, along with the Science Museum, and Festival Park, Cessnock subway is a great stop for access to any of these.
One of the least modern stations, it’s still pretty hidden from plain sight, like the Kelvinhall stop, but don’t let that put you off.

Despite being fairly busy, Cessnock Subway still has no escalators to service the lazy. It’s quite a bashed-​up station, but well located for many places.
There are plenty of shops around, and it’s quite a pleasant area to be. It’s the most convenient stop for The Science Centre, which is a great day out. It’s also fairly close to Ibrox football ground, but obviously Ibrox is the best stop for that nonsense.
