Benny’s Chicken

Although Benny’s is a limited national franchise chain of fried chicken outlets located in half a dozen cities round the UK and Ireland, their Albany Road branch warrants individual mention for a few reasons. Let’s get the first out the way early: the chicken here is heroically unpleasant. KFC tastes like breaded nuggets beamed straight from heaven by comparison. So why would you even think about frequenting it? Well, frankly, you wouldn’t if you’re passing at an hour when the superior (but still fairly rank) Miss Millie’s is open just round the corner on City Road. And if you’re not dead set on chicken, corking chippie Albany Fish Bar is only a few doors down the street. But Benny’s has a secret weapon: it sells greasy poultry way into the early hours, outstripping almost any competitor in walking distance. And when faced with a late-​night choice of regrettable takeaway or none at all, most post-​pubbers wandering home would admit that’s a solitary feather in Benny’s cap, even if you’ll probably rue that choice the next morning.

What can I say? I like chicken and quite frankly Benny’s Chicken doesn’t do it for me on any level. I’ve only been here a couple of times and both times its taken the staff an absolute age to cook my food. I’ll admit it’s cheap but I don’t think it’s particularly worth a special trip and like others have pointed out due to its location unfortunately there is so many other establishments in the area which offers the same sort of cuisine which tastes better and is around the same sort of price.

Benny’s chicken offers burgers, chips and a variety of fast food. The shop is pretty much just like a McDonalds with the similar 99p deals. For a small meal £1.99 will get you a burger, chips and a can of soft drink.
When I do take away it’s generally not chicken, also when albany fish bar is a few steps away I’d choose them every time.
Chicken from Benny’s chicken is very similar to KFC in my opinion, very tasty but not something to eat after a night on the drink.
