I’m drooooooooooliong thinking about this place. Good got chips from here is like being sent a box, yes a box, from heaven. Once, upon opening the lush smelling bag, my life literally flashed before my eyes! I thought i had dies. Award winning, Amazingly perfect Albony fish shop holds a dear place in my grease covered heart. The one bit of beef i have with this place is the sheer amount of people, day in day out have exactly the same idea as myself to get their supper fix here. You’ve always got to queue but my bloody god is it worth it!(Like i said a piece of heaven in a box!) There’s something super special about having your fish and chips in a box, like your getting a gift, which is pretty much what you are getting. Go on treat yourself, i’ll see you there!

It strikes me as very cruel that someone has decided to place a bus stop outside this gorgeous smelling chippy. I’m yet to work out if it is actually possible to stand here for ten minutes without succumbing to temptation. I’m also curious to know how many journeys have been missed, how many dates have been stood up and how many shows have been cancelled because of this bad town planning. But, cruelty aside, you can see why this chippy pulls in the awards. The chips are worth journeying across town for. In fact, my mum and her boyfriend make such an effort to visit the Albany Fish Bar every time they are up from Devon that I’ve started to question their original motives for coming to Cardiff. It is rather odd that they can work their way to the chippy effortlessly, but wouldn’t even know where to start if it came to walking into town and still have to ask where my toilet is. Students, don’t forget to take your card with you for that extra bonus. URBANCHALLENGE: Pull a smug grin at the people waiting for the 1802 to City Centre.

I know this is fighting talk but for me the Albany Fish Bar is the best fish and chip shop in Cardiff. The only reason I don’t go in there more often is the crowd spilling out the door. On joining the queue, it would be good if they had noticeboards like Alton Towers which say«only another two days before you get served». However when you do get there it’s well worth the wait. I religiously have to have the fish. The ridiculously large piece of fish fights to get out of the box all the way home. I know I will never eat it all but I don’t care. And don’t bother asking for a bit — I’m like Joey from Friends I can’t share. The chips are good as are the mushy peas. I thought long and hard about awarding the accolade of best in Cardiff as honourable mentions, should also go to the XL in Crwys Road and the Codfather in Canton.

This Fish and Chip shop is reputed to be one of the best in Roath, if not Cardiff, and to be fair, it deserves its reputation. Most famously, the food is served not in sweaty polystyrene trays, but in cardboard boxes, keeping the batter crispy and fresh. Old fashioned wooden chip forks and faux newspaper wrappings give AFB something of a ‘proper’ chipper feel about it. The food is always good, with proper chips(not frozen mashed potato formed into chip shapes and then fried) and I can definitely recommend the battered sausage. So, why only four stars? Well, as it has such a good reputation, it is always busy and there can be quite a wait. As a result, the staff are pushed and so the service is nt as friendly or personal as it could be. It does feel a little like a production line. But that being said, when I’ve been out and peckish AFB seems an obvious choice. Mmmm, scrummy!

Easily the best fish and chip shop in the Roath area. Every thing about this fish and chip shop is top quality and the service is always quick due to the large number of employees shovelling chips. A large portion of chips is easily can fill two people. This place is always busy and that means fresh chips that are well cooked. The busy times are from 6pm but you still won’t be left waiting more than ten minutes. If you want to try another fish and chip shop that is equally great look to Crwys road and Shah’s.

It is impossible to walk past this awarding winning fish and chips shop without dribble oozeing from both corners of your mouth. The smell escaping from this shop should be bottled and sold on described as a scent from cod! The portions are fan-dabby-docious and one large portion of chips is more than enough to share. The cod is perfectly cooked and has a light crispy batter hanging onto it like dew to grass. I agree with other reviews that it is refreshing to able to buy a sausage in batter that actually tastes of sausage. Top marks Albany! Prices are reasonable and the shop itself is nice and clean. Next time you fancy something fishy… Give it a try!

I’m not going to say too much about this fish and chip shop because its all been said. I just want to add some weight to that opinion. If you want decent no messing about good fish and chips then you need to go here. Like their sister shop on Colchester avenue(Penylan Fish Bar) Albany Fish Bar does fish and chips properly and tha’ts why they’ve both won awards. No small portions, golden battered fresh fish and well cooked decent sized chips. Add some curry sauce for good measure and wham you got yourself a high quality dinner. Hmmm I can smell the salt and vinegar now!

There’s a very, very good reason why the Albany Fish Bar keeps winning the Fish and Chip Shop of the Year award, and why they aren’t shy about putting it on display for the whole world to see. I’ll give you a hint; the reason is because the fish and chips in this place is pretty damn impressive. With a huge amount of fish and chip shops, you’ll find that they do some things fantastically, a lots of things well and a few things they just fail at. Albany Fish Bar is one of the only two chip shops I’ve tried that manages to nail everything to an excellent standard across the board. It takes skill to make fish and chips worth eating as a meal, rather than just be something you eat because you can’t be bothered cooking anything, or you don’t have the time, buy Albany Fish Bar manages it. Of particular note is their sausage and batter. I’m a sausage and batter fan, and this place gets them just right. The batter’s crispy, but not too crispy, and the sausage actually tastes like meat, rather than deep fried mattress stuffing. All at a price that shames other, lesser chippies. Go on. Treat yourself.

Hands down the best chippie in Roath with the awards(and pictures behind the counter of them being presented, including one from Keith Chegwin!) to prove it. Unless you’re feeding a family there’s no need to order large as the regular portions are extremely hearty, chips always perfectly cooked and fish never overly greasy. As the queues on Friday/Saturday nights attest, they’ve got the balance just right and if you visit often enough you’ll even get to know the appropriately chipper staff. Top tip for students: it takes an eagle eye to spot the offer, but show an NUS card and there’s a tasty 10 per cent discount off already-dirt cheap prices on all orders.

I rarely buy fish and chips, but when I do I want them to be good ones, minus any sogginess and with crisp, fresh fish batter. Albany Fish Bar has built up a very good reputation for serving decent fish and chips, probably because they focus on what they’re good at and don’t try to branch out into too many other types of food. That said, you can still get other chip shop fare such as pies. The portion sizes are generous; the place seems clean and tidy; and they’re open both at lunchtime(except on Sundays) and for supper, right up until midnight.

I had been told by someone that Albany Fish Bar is the place to go if you are looking for real fish and chips(obviously substitute a veggie burger/equivalent and chips for me). They were well aware of my hatred of places that try to sell, say, kebabs and chips. Or chinese food and chips. All that happens is that they end up messing up both things. Albany Fish Bar, though, definitely delivered to me on every level. The food itself was heavenly — too heavenly really considering holiday season is coming up and I should probably start eating a little bit healthier. The prices were excellent. The staff were great too, joking away and generally enjoying themselves. I would recommend this place to anyone, especially people disappointed by the frankly rubbish Chippy Lane.

Good chip shop. Not as good as it once was or maybe that’s because I ate too much of them.

I used to go here when I lived in Cardiff a while ago and like to call in occassionally now if able to park on the busy road. The sausage in batter are great and good valve for money. Great after a beer.

get in when busy(i.e friday evening) when everything ends up being totally fresh then unbeatable GRUB, but if you go in when quiet then sometimes get grotty chips that have been hanging around so the moral is go when busy accept the queing as part of the process and enjoy watching the world go past on albany road

Amazing chips if fresh but can be a bit dry and grotty if they’ve been hanging around for a while. Good variety on the menu from pasties to burgers to the usual sausages, fish, saveloys etc. Open late and in a great location for the Cathays/Roath area. Good price too!

Classic little fish and chip shop, good prices and deals on most of their food and nice big rounded portions! There open quite late so this place can be such a treat after a night down the local pub! They always manage to give the right amount of salt and vinegar to make the chips heavenly!
