We discovered Bonaugo when walking from our hotel to the Duomo, and our toddler, who had refused to nap on the train from Rome, began crying for a snack, specifically a pastry, which he had discovered in Rome. It was late afternoon, and the usually abundant pastry selection was diminished a bit at that time. The waiter had suggested a chocolate croissant, only to realize they were out of chocolate. The child was on the verge of a total meltdown when the server grabbed a plain croissant, sliced it open, and spread a thick layer of Nutella on it. He made a chocolate croissant, but more importantly, he made three loyal customers. After that, we stopped in at least once a day for the entire time we were in Florence. Now, of course, we would not have returned again and again and again had the food not been so delicious. All of the pastries were outstanding, the coffee was made perfectly, and the food off the menu was fantastic. I think I liked the sandwiches best of all. I had been eyeing the containers of marinated, grilled vegetables for days before I finally had the opportunity to lunch at Bonaugo. When I finally sunk my teeth into the long-awaited panino, I was not disappointed. In fact, I can safely say that it may have been the best sandwich I ever had. We were fortunate that this place was on the same street as our hotel, but even if it is not convenient for you, it’s worth the trip to find it.
