WW Chan & Sons Tailor

Hong Kong is known for its plethora of tailors but WW Chan stands out in terms of its quality fabrics and bespoke tailoring. They use fabrics from the fabric houses and mills (Ermenegildo Zegna, Loro Piana, Agnona, Cadena, Elegance, Tissus Monde and Rendez-​Vous) and the tailoring is of the highest quality.
I chose WW Chan because I wanted a couple of French cuff shirts made and they have experience in tailoring for women. The ladies section is called Irene Fashions, and I emailed the manager, Danny Chen, about the French cuff shirts and he quoted me a price that I expected out of a custom made shirt. It was actually cheaper than an Ann Fontaine shirt and with Anne Fontaine I still have to pay to alter it.
When I arrived at their store in Central, I was a little bit hesitant because it seemed like I was the only female customer. But Danny put me at ease and I explained to him what I wanted (button placket, many buttons like Anne Fontaine’s so I wouldn’t get the dreaded gape). He showed me the fabric that they would use (stretch cotton) and I could tell it was high quality woven cotton.
Danny took my measurements and when I looked around the store a jacket caught my eye — it was pink tweed and very familiar looking. I wanted one like it in black and they assured me that it will fit perfectly and even make me look slimmer. I looked inside their jacket and they even had silk lining and the famous chain at the bottom hem of the jacket like a certain French designer. Ooh la la!
If you like a certain dress, jacket or shirt, they will do their best to copy that style for you and have many fashion fashion magazines for you to peruse so you can find the style you like.
I had one fitting for the shirts and jacket and everything was completed within a week and a half. When I came in to collect my shirts, I loved how it hid all my flaws and enhanced everything else. The jacket was perfect for me and made me look 5 pounds slimmer. Danny told me that he will be travelling to the States for a tour and will take orders for shirts and suits for his clients in the US who aren’t able to make it to HK.
I am a total convert for bespoke tailoring. It is definitely not cheap, but when I can afford it, I will go back to WW Chan and make shirts, jackets and topcoats and trim down my wardrobe so I will only have quality clothes in a small quantity instead of ill fitting and cheaper clothes of large quantity.

We went to W. W. Chan in March for my boyfriend to get a couple of shirts done. A friend of mine had recommended this place, more for their suits than their shirts, but we decided to give it a go.
It is located in the 8^th floor of the Entertainment Building, right in the middle of Central where they moved in last year. The shop features an open space with nice views and a quiet, elegant, neat and classy ambience, just what you would expect for a high-​end tailor.
One of them invited us to take a seat at one of the tables and showed us their huge selection of patterns and colors. My boyfriend was only looking for a few white shirts and we had a great time picking around six different kinds of white. Then came the collar, cuff and style selection, and the fitting. All done in a very professional, smooth manner. A couple of days later, he was going back for fitting and the shirts arrived in Europe within two weeks, in two separate shipments. They were around 150 – 170 HKD each.
As they claim and in accordance to their Shanghainese handicraft legacy, everything is crafted by hand. There’s only a sewing machine in the shop and I could actually see the tailor working on it while waiting.
As I learned while I was there, they also tailor for women, through their branch Irene Fashions (since 1959!) and as my boyfriend experience was good, I am also considering getting a shirt done myself!
