Located in the heart of Central this is place has a long tradition in Hong Kong. Setting is simple, may be old fashioned, all round tables with the lazy Mary. Service is efficient, can be friendly depending if you’re a regular client. It can get unorganized if it’s packed. Taking all this into consideration it’s still a great place because the food is incredible! They serve traditional Shangai dishes, all the classics are on the menu. Stir fried river shrimps, sweet and sour fish, pan fried pork Bun, Xiao Loong Bao, Zhejiang Pork, Chinese Cabbage with smoked Chinese ham, just to name a few. All perfectly done. Can’t remember an occasion with a fault from the kitchen. Excellent value for money.

My mom’s side of the family is from Shanghai so when it comes to Shanghai food, my family is very picky. You’ll always hear them having a debate about which is the best restaurant for Shanghai food in Hong Kong and it gets very lengthy and in depth, at which point i completely zone out because I always know the winner. Shanghai Fraternity Association always wins. It’s a members only restaurant. How many restaurants, not clubs, do you know that are«members only.» the whole restaurant knows my entire family. The drills is always the same, we get the same room, we order the same dishes and we bring our own wine without corkage fee. My uncle is allowed to smoke cigars in the room.(Probably why he thinks its the best restaurant.) On an authenticity level, SFA does have very authentic and tasty shanghai dishes. The famous«si ng» which means«time fish» is probably my family’s favourite dish, maybe because it’s grand and big and looks intimidating to eat with all the bones. It is very good at SFC and we almost always order it. Other stuff we always order is the crystal shrimp, jelly fish head, pork cubes, I love their«mei cai kou rou» which is the preserved vegetables mixed with pork. We also always order the smoked eggs, which typically is what it sounds like and they are absolutely delicious. It is the typical Chinese comfort food. During hairy crab season, my family is NUTS and they either order boxes to be delivered at home(which of course they arguably say that THEY make it the best) and at SFC. if you get a chance to dine at this place, I recommend going with your family, tables are large and sometimes you can bring wine and get free corkage, try to befriend the oldest looking staff there. He will usually take care of you if you give him a good tip and plan to come back. Enjoy Shanghainese food! at(arguably«the best») shanghainese restaurant in town. Haha
