This place is terrific. As I was leaving a family asked why I’d come(there weren’t a lot of white people there) and the mom really impressed on me how it was«Chinese home cooking, Chinese home cooking», and that’s what it’s like. The staff is harried but friendly, and I went back a few times on a workweek in Kennedy Town and was rewarded with a delicious, _very_reasonably priced meal every time. Hearty, fun Chinese food. And yeah the claypots are great.

This place(Seung Hei) specializes in claypot rice. My friends and I really liked this place as an alternative to Kwan Kee which isn’t too far away. The people who work here are much nicer than the staff there, and the seating is better(you actually get chairs!). You can also come here without a reservation, but this place does fill up and will have a small line outside in the later hours of the dinner period. When we came here, we had some people who spoke Mandarin and English, and the staff here was nicer about that than Kwan Kee was(old school Canto staff there). In terms of quality, I personally think Kwan Kee is still better, though the difference isn’t that extreme. They have plenty of options on how to customize your bowl(different meats, vegetables, etc.). I like my claypot with Chinese sausages and spareribs. The salt and pepper fried tofu makes a great appetizer as well. If you have a sudden craving for claypot, this place makes a good choice. Kwan Kee has slightly better food but you’ll need to plan a bit ahead in order to even get seated at a good time.

Hot pot rice — how can a winter being complete without it?! It is so great to have a restaurant near home serving hot pot rice. Although the quality is not as good as my fav 坤記, 2 points has guaranteed it a pass. 1 — the effort in sticking with the traditional way of cooking using charcoal fire; 2 — the golden rice crust(This is an unforgivable mistake for the rice in the hot pot to be overlooked and stick against the pot!)
