Came here because of the happy hour specials. It’s 1HKD(13 cents US) for he first 20 mins from 5pm on the dot(leave the office early!). The catch is it doubles every 20 mins, so $ 1 /$ 2 /$ 4 /$ 8. And so on The first hour drinks are cheaper than 7 – 11 and then after that. Because it’s basically a race against time and you can get drunk for less than a beer from 7 – 11 so big thumbs up.

The sounds of Hendrix and The Who fill the air and the aroma of fried chicken and steak tickle your nose. You might just be at Stone Nullah near the Wan Chai markets off of Queens Road. It looks like an English pub(and sounds like one with all the British punters that come here), but the menu seems pure Americana to me. I got the ribs, but I had a difficult time deciding between the chicken fried steak, sockeye salmon and southern fried chicken. The food was fabulous, the service was top-notch and the drinks were pleasing. This is another one of the many restaurants that many have recommended to me and yet another that I’m glad they did. This city is sent from the food gods. I’m certain of it!

A five star rating goes to the bar alone as a great post-work happy hour. While the insanely cheap drinks do play a role(starting at $ 1 at 5pm and doubling every 20 mins to max out at $ 32), I’d come here regardless. Always a fun mixed crowd, the party spills out into the front of the bar and the side alley. Fortunately for Stone Nullah, these areas are wide and spacious, giving the place a lively outdoor atmosphere without feeling crowded or hectic. A great environment for winding down after a long day. The bartenders and drinks waiters provide really excellent service, which is far above the level you find at your typical Hong Kong watering hole. Despite the crowds that can swell at peak happy hour times, you never wait long for a drink — and if you do the attentive staff makes sure you know they haven’t forgotten about you. They also smartly have waiters floating through the outdoor crowd taking and delivering drink orders, which increases convenience for those of us who prefer to be outside, while simultaneously decreasing wait time at the bar if you decide to wander in to order. I’ve heard great things about the restaurant as well, but haven’t gotten a chance to try it yet, despite my many trips to the bar! I hope to check it out soon and be able to update the review.

We ventured into Wanchai and sampled the delights of some down to earth southern chicken. The ambiance in Stone Nullah changes quite significantly after 8pm, from a great after work watering hole to a deliciously funky restaurant. Hats off to the staff, who didn’t make me feel like a complete numpty for arriving 45 minutes before our dinner reservation gasping for a Friday night drink. This also gave me plenty of time to review their menu, which looked mouthwatering. When the girls arrived, we opted for ordering a couple of the whole chickens, southern fried and Korean styles, and an array of sides. The chicken was succulent and perfectly cooked. The Korean flavour won hands down. The sides were also winners, with bacon oil chips, house veggies and spicy cauliflower. Yum! The winner of my meal had to be the cocktail though. A refreshing earl grey lemon martini. To. Die. For. Big thumbs up from me!

TLDR: Good food, good atmosphere, bad service. Context: New Yorker visiting HK for a week. This was the last proper meal of my 7-day trip in HK. And my friends living in HK decide to take me to a restaurant which serves soul food. In Hong Kong. A 16-hour flight from Mason-Dixon line. And I’ve had the pleasure of being stationed in the South for periods of time. First, we’ll get the good out. The food was great. The drinks at the bar were good. It had a nice, intimate atmosphere. Now that that’s out of the way, we’ll go to why I chose to go with Unilocal’s description of «Meh. I’ve experienced better,»: the service was bad. It was a Friday night, the place was packed, and there were only two wait staff. The hostess tried to help, but service was extremely slow. The wine got to us pretty quickly, but the rest of the dishes came out a good 15 – 20 minutes after we were done with the previous course. I asked for some balsamic vinegar with my bread, and it took 3 requests and 15 minutes to arrive. And when it did, it was mostly olive oil with some drops of balsamic vinegar. The reasoning was that they use a highly concentrated balsamic vinegar. I think that in this case, «No, we don’t have any for the bread, sorry.» I do appreciate the staff trying to accommodate my request, but sometimes it’s better to have no product than a shoddy one. Main courses came out, and one of them was the wrong one. On notifying him of the error, these were his words. «No you didn’t, you got the fillet(we ordered the T-bone). Who did you order it with?(You, buddy.) Well, the fillet is better anyway.» Again, a simple apology would’ve sufficed. I certainly wasn’t going to send it back to the kitchen and wait another 30 minutes for a medium-rare steak to get cooked. Now maybe I caught them on a bad night when they were understaffed. But coming from New York, the level of service simply isn’t acceptable, especially if you’re going to be getting that automatic 10% service charge tacked onto my bill. And it can’t be that I’m expecting too much of service in Hong Kong; I’ve had excellent service at three other places in the area(with similar prices) for dinner the three previous nights, and all three nights the service was excellent. Would I come here again? Probably not, unless I’m in Hong Kong for more than a month and craving soul food. I’d like to give the place another chance, but I don’t want to fork out that much money for Southern fried chicken. Especially when I can get it for much less in NY.

I really like the food here. It’s like southern comfort food. They have amazing beef and fried chicken, and all their food is amazing. Mac and cheese. Cauliflower. I’ve only been for dinner and I haven’t been disappointed. Highly recommend trying this place if you’re craving good ol’ fashioned southern comfort food

There’s so much I love about Stone Nullah. The menu is incredible — true farm to table food. Even down to the tomatoes are straight from their farm in Sai Kung. I know this because the first time I ate there the chef personally told me. He’s very passionate about his menu and it definitely shows in the food :) The drinks are great. Around Christmastime I had the best mulled wine of my life there. But everything else is great too — and I love that they always have a pale ale from Oregon on tap! That alone keeps me coming back. And the staff are SO kind. I get a warm smile and welcome every time I come as if they’re saying hi to an old friend. As a new-ish expat in HK, this actually means a lot to me. Stone Nullah has definitely become my «Cheers» bar(perhaps a reference only Americans will get… but suffice to say it’s a bar«where everybody knows your name.») Oh, plus they play west coast rap like tupac, B.I.G., and Bone Thugz. I mean come on, ya gotta be kidding… In love with their playlist every time I come in! C’mon in for some delicious mac n’ cheese, a Dead Guy Ale, and a lil’ Hypnotize by Biggie. It’ll be a great time, I promise.

I travel the world and eat great meals all around the world. This place was incredible! The Mac and cheese, BBQ glazed bacon, country fires tenderloin, monte cristo, etc. I can’t believe how everything they brought was so good. Put your life in the waiter’s hands and just enjoy. I have NEVER had a meal that good. WOW!

One of my most memorable meals on my last visit to Hong Kong was at Posto Publicco so when I discovered that the same team was behind Stone Nullah Tavern I knew I had to check it out.(The fact that it was less than a five minute walk from my Wan Chai hotel also helped.) We sat at the open air bar on a Saturday night, ordered cocktails and pig’s head nachos, mac and cheese and smoked cauliflower. The pig’s head nachos with crispy pig’s ears and chili con testa were especially memorable. Particularly when paired with my favorite Hitachino Nest white ale! Stone Nullah Tavern is definitely the kind of place I’d want to be my local if I lived in HK. As such, we returned the following night with more colleagues in tow. I was keen to try the fat kid cake which combines red velvet cake, NY cheesecake, crème brulee and dark chocolate mousse. One or two bites was more than enough! For the breezy open air bar, the selection of Hitachino Nest beer, the friendly bartenders and the tasty food, Stone Nullah Tavern is an excellent choice when in Wan Chai.
