The aroma of this restaurant will catch you if you are anywhere within 20 feet of it. This spot is all about French roasted chicken, and they serve it in various ways(in salad, in sandwiches, in quarters, in halves, or in wholes!) Not ashamed to say I had it every day for lunch for 3 days once. The chicken’s delicious, and everything is a reasonable price. The chicken salad is roughly HKD $ 70, and the take away is packaged nicely in high quality materials to ensure the best safety of your food. Wouldn’t recommend their soup though as the mushroom one I had was very watery and not filled all the way.

It didn’t start off well as I wanted to buy takeaway for home and was told there was an half hour wait for the chicken. This was 8pm Friday aka prime peak hour so the staff obviously didn’t time their cooking well. Once I got home with my half chicken and 2 sides, the chicken was tender and moist… Not bad with some of my personal hot sauce. Side of veges were super oily and quite bland. The quinoa was alright but not the most exciting sides.

La Rotisserie is all about roast chicken, serving it sandwiches, as whole birds as well as quarters and halves. Chicken is a deceptively difficult bird to do justice to. Battery reared chicken lacks in flavor and texture, while it is easy for even the highest quality bird to dry out if overcooked. La Rotisserie flies its chickens in from France and then roasts them on a spit in an open kitchen which you can see as you walk by, luring you have chicken for lunch/dinner. I have never been disappointed with flavor, although sometimes the breast can be slightly overcooked, needing some of the gravy it comes with. For sides, there are always three options to choose from. Usually, roast potatoes, some form of seasonal vegetable and a pasta option. The roast potatoes are not of the same quality as the chicken although still perfectly acceptable. They miss a good crunchy shell that the best roasties have. There are always a few deserts on offer as well. I find it hard to resist the chocolate tart. Wonderfully fine pastry topped with glorious chocolate. What could be better? It is certainly the best French style tart I have found while in Hong Kong. The only downside is that it is take away only. As a result, if you don’t live nearby you will either need to heat your chicken up once you get home or try to eat it standing up(not an easy feat if you haven’t ordered the sandwich). For me, it is a 2 minute walk back to my flat which probably explains why I come here more often than is probably healthy.

Speaking of French roast chicken in Hong Kong, I can’t really think of a lot of places but the first one that comes to my mind is definitely La Rotisserie. Since my office is not far from La Rotisserie, I always get takeaway from them when I can’t think of what to eat. And every time when I walk past Hillier Street, I am totally captured and attracted by the enticing aroma from the roast chicken. The delicious scent of chicken leads me to them every single time(No, I can’t resist…). They have really good lunch deals, like ¼ chicken and two sides at a very reasonable price, made to order chicken sandwich and chicken salad. My pick is their chicken sandwich, handy and simply delicious. Instead of traditional French baguette, they use soft and warm bread roll for their sandwiches, which I really like. I love the embrace of the soft white bread smeared with mayo with tender, juicy and flavorful chicken. The generous amount of chicken always makes me happy. For your information, they are using corn-fed Picalou chickens imported from France. Apart from their signature roast chicken, they also have lovely quiches and cakes, such as the classic Quiche Lorraine and their rich chocolate cake. No matter you are opting for a proper meal, pre-dinner snacks or desserts, you can find everything you need at La Rotisserie.

The amazing aroma of roast chicken hits you before you turn the corner to La Rotisserie — a small open fronted shop between Queens Road Central and Jervois Street. That’s right, don’t be fooled by the Queen’s Road address — the entrance is just around the corner on Hillier Street at the bottom of a flight of steps. Just look for the queue of people — La Rotisserie’s popularity seems endless and the line outside is testament to that. La Rotisserie import all of their corn fed chickens from France for an authentic rotisserie experience and with the friendly French chef behind the counter, this certainly seems to be the case. Each day they prepare a few side dishes including the divine roast potatoes which are left to roast underneath the chickens, collecting the dripping juices as they cook. Seriously delicious! Healthier options such as mixed vegetables, semolina and soup are available too as well as a selection of quiches and a roast chicken sandwich($ 48). I tend to stick to the quarter chicken lunch set which comes with a side and either a soup or an iced tea, all for $ 68. It’s certainly one of the healthier lunch options available in Sheung Wan(if you skip the glorious potatoes that is) and the portion is generous with the tender, juicy chicken taking centre stage. Interestingly, La Rotisserie also sell wine including chilled and ready to go bottles of rosé for only $ 118 — a convenient option for post-5pm office drinks for those working in the area.
