This place is very unique because most of their dishes are black. My favorite was the truffle pizza and the sliders. Even though it was delicious, I don’t think I’ll come again. This is definitely something just to try. Very quite atmosphere.

New restaurant with a cool concept executed in a fairly average way. So black is the theme of the food. But not the theme of the restaurant, apparently, when I first stepped in. It was kinda just slightly too lit. Very decent décor, but I couldn’t help thinking if I’d actually prefer a dim environment, even though I’m among those who hate pitch dark restaurants just to «set the mood». Menu items seemed a bit limited too. The signature All Day Breakfast was not available. But they have an local brew black IPA(instead of just serving stouts), which earned some points. We ordered the onion soup, a black truffle pizza and some escargots. The snails were actually pretty good, but nothing was really black in color excepts the dish. Onion soup was okay. It tasted no difference from an ordinary onion soup, excepts being black in color. The pizza smelled good with the black truffle. But one could imagine that was canned black truffle, probably buying from CitySuper. So all in all, nothing wrong with the food but nothing particularly impressive. And they could work on the vibe of the restaurant a bit to attract the right group of people. At the moment, it didn’t appeal to me that this is the right place to have a nice Friday dinner over a glass of wine with my partner.

Having recently moved here, we stumbled upon this restaurant and thought it might appeal to us. It has a cool look to it from the street. We were not aware that it had just opened, but the place was entirely empty come 7pm on a Sunday. We were kind of not sure why it was empty, but come to find out it might have been empty because it is new and locals would not know it was there yet. Front staff and cooking staff all seem very friendly and accommodating, but it was the executed menu items that left us feeling flat about the place. They bring light flatbread cracker when you sit down. We ordered some drinks. They serve beer and wine. Pinot Louis Latour is not a generous pour and was not good(I’m kind of a Oregon Pinot snob… this is my own fault.). Overly chilled and almost had not opened up enough. We started with 24 month White ham, which is delicious. Presentation like carpaccio and very good. We then had the romaine salad with salmon. It was OK. Nothing great, but OK. Salmon was fresh. Just a salad. We then had the sobrasade pizza and our perplexed heads got confused. Served more like a tostada crisp and quite small, it too was nothing noteworthy. On their menu, they do have some fish options and also all day breakfast(I know, sounds strange, but picture on menu looked interesting). I read in a review just now that all the food options are black in theme, thus Kettle Black. I think as they are new, they need to get their footing on the menu. I would not have known about the black theme if I had not read in review, for it was not apparent to me that this was their niche. Our bill was $ 495HKD and we thought for this price, we should be more impressed and left wanting to return. There are too many options in that area for us to think about going back to this restaurant that left us feeling flat about our experience. Maybe in time they will work out their kinks. Go for yourself, write a review and decide for yourself.
