ive been back a few more times since my first review and must say the service is still great maybe even better if that is possible. The reason for the upgrade is that i’ve noticed that they do salads very well and are not just poutine place So if you want to explore something else, they have other food options. If you want fries only, they can do that and do it very well. Had the caesar salad recently and it was extremely good,(i did not think a french fry place would have done that as well but I was surprised). Very good ambience in the place, it has become one of my favorite restaurants in the city and it’s close by which is great.

It’s got potential. 4-stars for the vibe, the area is getting more hip. A casual place for drinks too. Poutine depends what you’re looking for. It’s not a classic like real Québécois like La Belle Patate, though they never said they were. A bit of a Japanese flavour to it, with its curry items as well. I prefer the cheese curds to be squeaky-like when biting into it. Also found the gravy to be less flavourful. Good size for the small, proportionate mushrooms & onions, ordered the classic. Did add a topping, pepperoni, which was quite tasty, at $ 3 for the amount as shown, will scare away those value seekers lol. Worth returning if I’ve got the craving in the area. Cards ok.

I really don’t know how to say it other than I experienced significant expectation gap driven disappointment. My review should not reflect the quality of the food, I’d rate the quality as a solid 3 star, and definitely eatable, if that’s what you’re looking for. Furthermore, the staff was lovely, and the restaurant was clean and presentable, Now for my story… it was a rainy Monday night. I was looking for a quick bite on my way to the airport(from North Van) to pick up my wife who’d been on a business trip. As I thought to myself«why don’t you enjoy your last few hours of borrowed bachelorhood by indulging in food that she wouldn’t approve of» and turned my attention to Poutine, my guilty pleasure. With a name like Jean-Talon(look him up, the guy was seriously good news for Canada), I was expecting a very Québecois experience, well that wasn’t quite what I got. I arrived to find out that the place is very much a Vancouver style fusion of East-meets-West-meets-poutine. While hoping for a traditional poutine meal and some great fries. For some reason, I feel like Belgian Fries has ruined my fry gauge, because I find them amazing and anything not as amazing is just not that enjoyable. The fries at PJT were meh(to me). All said, I ordered a small poutine with the beef sauce, didn’t finish it and left with the feeling that I wouldn’t be going back. Maybe I should have tried a more traditional sauce, maybe I should have ordered extra cheese… I’ll never know.

The service is amazing. But the food, the first crispy bite of your French fries you will fall in love. Go here it is way better than Belgian fries.

I want to like this place more, because the owner is so nice. We tried the Japanese curry poutine and it was tasty but I don’t see myself craving it. But I want the Poutinerie to be successful, so that when I do have a Japanese curry poutine craving, I can do so!

I know that this place has been around for a long time, however, walked by it the other day and took more of a notice of it on December 30th and book marked it for future reference. They have a decent selection on their menu, however, no point in messing with the classic, therefore, we stuck with a small traditional Poutine. A small was $ 8 and a decent sized portion. The place is small, however, there is enough seating inside for a quick bite. This place is a bit hit and miss in terms of consistency. My Poutine was okay. It wasn’t the best Poutine I’ve had but it wasn’t the worst. It was just okay. Lots of onion and mushroom chunks. The portion for gravy and fries was awesome. Not too much that it just made a few pieces soggy, however, not too little that there was even distribution. The owner was super friendly and charming. Great customer service. They have daily specials which are worth checking out. Good background music of pop covers done lounge style.

Right around the corner from my place. Stopped in to try things out. Had the Caesar salad, and poutine with beef. The salad was… different. There were a few spears of deep fried asparagus on it, and rather than tossing the salad, the dressing was glopped on top. Wedges of tomatoes topped it off. The poutine was ok. Fries, gravy with ground beef in it, and curds. Portion was a good size. Flavour was lacking. Service was enthusiastic, but slow, despite there only being three tables seated. Don’t think that I’ll go back.

I came here on Friday night with a group of friends, and we just loved it! I had the Japanese-style curry poutine, and it was amazing! I will definitely go back again just for that. They had pitchers of Strange Fellows beer on special for $ 14, which we all thought was a great price. The owner(?)/server was super attentive(but not over-bearing) and sweet, and made us feel completely at ease. The service level really reminded me of my visits to small restaurants in Japan– the owner/server clearly cared, and really just went above and beyond. My husband isn’t a fan of poutine, so he ordered prawns instead. The prawns came out with the poutine, but they had obviously sat for a bit so they were cold. My husband didn’t say anything, but he didn’t finish them, and probably didn’t look as thrilled as the rest of us who were happily shoving poutine into our faces. The owner didn’t charge us for the prawns, and even gave my husband a new batch of them to-go, promising they were piping hot and much better than the ones that had been originally served. We were so surprised– as I mentioned, none of us complained. The owner/server also remembered everyone’s names when saying goodbye. Such impeccable service! We will definitely go back(well, maybe not my poutine-hating husband. What is WRONG with him???)

Jean Talon has the friendliest staff. We had the curry and the mushroom poutine and both were delicious. Strangefellow beers on tap and pitcher special were great too.

I had the Japanese curry poutine as recommended to us to try as it’s their most popular. It looked like thick curry was just plopped onto fries and tasted just as such. My friend and I shared one order but couldn’t finish it, simply because the taste got tiring. In dissecting the dish: –Japanese curry: I’ve had better elsewhere. Japanese curry should not be this thick. –Fries: Crispy, but nothing special. Service was great, but I wouldn’t come back for the food.

Wow! Now, perhaps my opinion is less-than-desirable since I’m from the US, but I was really impressed. Our server was polite, helpful, and very gracious. The food was outstanding! We got two types of poutine, salad, prawns, and a couple drinks. The fries in the poutine were as fresh as they get. Very crispy, despite having been doused in just the right amount of curry gravy and cheese curds. The prawns were cooked perfectly, the asparagus on the salad was BOMB, and our drinks were well-mixed. I couldn’t find anything negative to say, other than the fact that this place should have a line out the door!

Nice ambience, nice music, very good service(but we were the only two in the restaurant.) I’m no routine connoisseur, but my girlfriend is. And she approved. But she thinks Fritz European fry house is better. I got the curry, and she got the original. Give this place a shot.

I’m from the United States, so for my first visit to Canada trying poutine was on the top of my list! I am so glad I stopped by Poutinerie Jean-Talon for my first poutine dish… it was sooo good! I shared the classic sauce special poutine with my boyfriend and we ate everything on our dish! The owner was very attentive and very kind. he made sure everything went well and you can tell he was very proud of his poutine. I would highly recommend that you stop by– you won’t regret it!

A wonderful place for poutine the corner of Fraser and Broadway, and a great addition to the neighbourhood. We were greeted by the friendly owner who took time to explain the menu and the differences between the various poutine options. We were in time for the happy hour menu, which featured a poutine and a glass of Strange Fellows beer for $ 10. The poutines are topped which mozzarella cheese, so we chose the substituted cheese curds for an additional $ 2. Our poutines came out in a timely manner, and were piping hot. The fries were superb. We chose the vegetarian Japanese curry poutine. The curry had a slight sweetness to it that complimented the cheese curds. I’m not sure how close the curry is to a traditional Karē-Raisu, but we thought it worked well atop fries. The restaurant was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the jazz music that played in the background and the reruns of English premier league soccer matches on the TV. Next time we’ll be back with friends for the happy hour pitchers of beer and to try the beef stew poutine.

Fantastic place for poutine! They’ve got a classic poutine, plus a few other interesting interpretations. My favorite was the Japanese curry poutine, absolutely delicious. Good beer selection and good happy hour deal of money off a pitcher. We went with a group, and had nothing but fantastic service, great drinks, and delicious food. Everyone loved what they got. The restaurant is also very clean and beautifully decorated, a very nice ambiance. Would totally be appropriate for a date or just a night out with friends. Reasonably priced too!

I work in the area and I’d been meaning to go here but my schedule wouldn’t allow for me to visit until today. I’m glad I did because I’m Unilocaling as I’m eating because this place has great food and great service. I was welcomed in in a very friendly manner and explained to about their offerings, of which I opted for their signature curry poutine. Their small was more than enough for me and the large looked to be a perfect size to share for at least 2 people. Though very non-traditional(Japanese curry sauce with fries and cheese curds), everything came well together. The fries were perfectly crisp, the curry sauce was very flavourful, and the cheese curds, oh, the cheese curds, were so so good. I really like that they offered a lot of vegetarian options. This place really is a great addition to the Mount Pleasant area. Very convenient location, too, right at Fraser and Broadway.

If you are looking for traditional poutine, this is not the place for you. They put their own twist on the dish but to me, it is a successful twist… I, too, was ushered in by the owner on a quiet night. I was with my sister and we shared the beef stew poutine and a large order of wings. If you are not sure of the portion, the owner will show you the plates and you’ll be able to decide fairly quickly between regular and large. The poutine was really delicious with perfectly cooked fries that held up the toppings. It was more like ground beef and tomato sauce than stew but on this occasion, it was exactly what I was craving. I was not as into the wings but we had the barbecue wings and the sauce had a nice tang. Finally, the owner was so hospitable and I overheard him treating every customer with the same, sweet charm. It sounds like they have some good specials going and the drinks are very reasonably priced. It’s a great addition to the neighbourhood!

A great addition to the Fraser/Broadway hub! They’ve just set up shop, so it may take some time for the proprietors to define the vibe of the place and have it reach its full potential. That said, I was ushered into Jean-Talon by a friendly owner who promised poutine and beer. The staff delivered on these promises in a big way. Beer and wine were both on special for $ 3(this may have been an opening weekend promotional price). The taps haven’t been installed yet, but the bottled beer selection was quite good. I’m hoping that when the taps go in, they will feature some local brews from the Mount Pleasant area. After some fast and courteous service from the wait staff, the poutine was dished out. I’ve always been a bit of a purist when it comes to the showpiece of Québécois cuisine(usually I’m careful not to indulge unless the dish is made by a real habitant). This poutine delivered in every way: the fries were crisp, the curds were sizable, and the sauce was spot-on. I say«sauce» and not«gravy» because I had Jean-Talon’s signature dish — the curry poutine. The owner explained that they use a Japanese curry recipe on their signature poutine. I noticed some diced peas and carrots in the mix as well. Whatever the combination, the thing was delicious — some of the best poutine I’ve had this side of Montréal. My friends and I observed that, given the hipster reputation of the neighborhood, a few more«specialty» poutines may be welcome additions to the menu. We also remarked that a large«poutine» sign in the window or on the sidewalk might pull in more folks off the street. Opinions aside, the fact remains that the poutine currently being offered is eight shades of awesome. Keep up the good work, Jean-Talon — I’ll be back soon!

Just opened up by the founder /owner of Café de L’orangerie. This place is a poutinerie that you can come and enjoy Poutine and and a beer or a glass of wine. Hey!!! That’s a great idea! A great extension of the L’Orangerie. And a wonderful place that will renew this neighborhood and help give it a new funky vibe. I’m sure this will be a new success. Ambiance 3.5 stars Comfy setting 3.5 stars Casual? Yes Great place to hang out for some taters and gravy and wash it down with a brewski or vino? 5 stars. Why review only 3 stars? Let’s give them an unbiased review in the middle of the pack and let the rest of the reviewers decide. I’m sure you’ll like this place. Remember, they’re still new and will eventually get the menu and stuff sorted out. Like when Café de L’Orangerie first opened, the reviews were a bit harsh till they understood just how far ahead of the curve these guys were.
