I love this gallerys name! It also suggests how modern the art is. I really enjoyed looking here, since I do not enjoy older art as much as contemporary pieces. It is also interesting to read about the current artists and see what they were inspired by.(If you would like to see what inspired the name… have a look on the website!) The owner reaches his goal of making the viewer an active participant. I was really drawn into the pieces. There are often events here for the opening of different exhibitions, with music and drinks. Events are often sponsored by a local club or restaurant.

I attended a friend’s birthday party here and thought the space and idea of having your birthday at a trendy gallery was a lot more exciting than the average bar/restaurant. La Petite Mort Gallery is a small gallery but the perfect size for a small event and it’s centrally located in the Byward Market. The art here is unique and some of it is quite striking. After all, the gallery’s name translates into«the little death» which is meant to describe the moment after … well, you can look it up on their website :) The staff set the place up so the coat check was in the basement which meant you had to walk through the gallery and all of the guests. Otherwise the place was setup really well for such events. There was a cash bar so it seems they’re licensed to serve for these events and you were more than welcome to bring extra cash(or probably plastic) and purchase some of the art. This isn’t, however, a gallery I’d take children too or my grandmother as some of the stuff isn’t exactly PG.

This is a small gallery on Cumberland Street that I would highly recommend to someone looking to buy contemporary and unorthodox art. It’s an okay place to browse, although the selection isn’t expansive. Their exhibits run anywhere from one day to one month, so you can always keep your eyes open for something new and provocative to grace their walls. The gallery is also available for rentals for private and public functions. I’ve been to two so far and they were both good experiences in a close-knit and unique environment.
