The Rum cake is delicious as is the Whiskey cake. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed the postcards and other gifts, especially the ‘Halifax Shot glass’. I’m bringing one of those home! As a first timer to Halifax it was cool to learn about prohibition and what people did to enjoy a beverage!

We came here during our Carnival Caribbean tour. While visiting Grand Cayman, we, along with another bunch of tourists, decided to pay someone to give us a tour of the area. The Rum Cake Factory was our final stop, and I’d recommend it to anybody. Free samples of the rum cake, and free samples of literally as much rum as you wanted. The staff was pleasant to deal with as well, which is always a plus. All in all, a great place to visit if you’re going to Grand Cayman anyway, and I recommend the mango rum; we even picked up a moderately priced bottle to take home.

Like I always say… any place that gives out free samples of cake is a good place, and any place that gives out free samples of three different kinds of cake is a GREAT place. Ok, I don’t always say that, but I may start. In addition to the delightfully delicious cakes that Rum Runners is so famous for, they also sell a variety of merchandise including t-shirts, sweaters, mugs, and of course — shot glasses. Much of it is humorous, which I appreciate, and the staff is friendly. They won’t even give you a look when you sneak an extra sample on your way out. Whether you’re looking for a fun gift or a treat for yourself, Rum Runners is a great place to check out.

«But why is the rum gone?» Okay, so that reference may be a bit dated(but yarrr, it be Captain Jack Sparrow, he’ll always be cool me hearties. Wait. Maybe it’s just the excuse to talk like a pirate that I like. Well, that’s gotta be cool at least… wait, don’t answer that…). However, the delicious cakes sold by Rum Runner’s Cake Factory are definitely fresh and always a great choice, whether as a treat for yourself, or a gift for someone else. Whole cakes are a bit pricey(about 25 bucks, but admittedly worth every penny, you’re not going to find much to match them in Hal-town), though if you’re looking for something a bit cheaper they sell smaller versions of their creations for just under $ 8. I’ve had their plain, and their chocolate rum cakes, and both are fantastic(it’s rum and sugar, two of nature’s most perfect foods, er, drinks, er… substances. Seriously, what’s not to love?). Their whiskey cake is also quite tasty(again, whiskey and sugar… I’m not even gonna say anything else…).

Rum Runners Cake Factory runs on historical relevance and tourist attractions. A warm and woodsy aesthetic provides a less than obvious shop of keep-sakes, as the brand primps itself with the story of the old rum runners and its ties to Halifax’s early days. Apparel, mugs, maps, maple syrup, accessories and other forms of memorabilia are placed throughout the store, and it seems that the cakes are merely an element. However, the cakes are always stocked, and freshly made within the shop’s confines. A glass window is positioned throughout, so onlookers can catch a glimpse. Located beside Sugah, the shop is a complimentary addition to the area, and something worth trying for the rum /cake lovers. The shop is definitely geared towards tourists, but anyone and everyone can enjoy the goodness of their edible shwag.

I apparently share a quality with a number of older men who frequent Rum Runners, I love the Whiskey Cake. I just can’t help it! There is something so delicious about it. Thought most would not believe me, I find it to be much better than their rum cakes. I guess Whiskey Runners just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Depending on what time of day you show up in the shop there will be free samples for you to test. They sell the cakes in air sealed packages to maintain freshness if you’re shipping one off as a gift(which they do quite frequently). They also have hats and sweaters and other assorted gifts to give to fathers around the world. They love this stuff, trust me. So bare the cold and head down to the waterfront to check out these great cakes. They can be a little pricey, but they are very much worth every penny… especially the whiskey cake!

If you’re like me and have a particularly difficult Dad, Grandpa or boyfriend that you want to grab a gift for, then I highly recommend you check out ‘Rum Runners Rum Cake Factory.’ I popped in earlier today and left with a Glenbreton Single Malt Whiskey cake, which I sampled first. I usually find tinned baked goods extremely sweet and processed tasting, but this was amazing! ‘Rum Runners’ also carries a traditional take on the rum cake, as well as t-shirts and glassware commemorating the Nova Scotian prohibition era rum running business. I happened to mention to the lady helping me that it was for a gift and she quickly ran to the back of the shop to get me a fresher cake.(Good until January 25th) Like it’s going to last that long… This little business is locally owned and the cakes are made on site, so support this local shop for your holiday related gift needs. Or, for your own rum cake needs as the case may be. By the way, the entrance to this shop is off the harbor front board walk in the main level of the Bishop’s Landing complex.

I am a very big fan of Rum in general. And I love Rum Cake especially from Grand Cayman such as the Tortuga brand. So when I found out I could get Rum Cake in Halifax, I definitely stopped on by to Rum Runners to check them out. I was pleasantly surprised at the store itself. They have a nice, open concept. It doesn’t hurt that, like what Liz S had said in her review, they are right beside Sugah. So its a very good location and they dress the store up nicely. They have a good selection of merchandise but lets cut to the chase and talk about the Rum Cake shall we? If you are used to the famous Tortuga Rum Cake this cake will be a little more on the dry side. But I know there are plenty of people who would enjoy that because Tortuga can be a bit too«gooey» at times. So the Rum Cake at Rum Runner’s is soft and light but you definitely get a hint of Rum with every bite which is what I was looking for. Their selection is very good. My favorite is the Chocolate Rum Cake. They are also smart enough to have samples so you know what you are buying before hand. The staff are kind and friendly but also knowledgeable about the Rum Cake which is important. So all in all its a good Rum Cake store. The cake isn’t my favorite and I am more of a fan of Rum Cake from other countries but I am happy that someone has finally opened up a Rum Cake shop and I hope Rum Runner’s sticks around for a very long time. I would suggest a bit more sugar or more Rum in their cake but I also acknowledge the fact that many of my friends like it just the way it is.
