I had a delicious dinner here with family. We tried several of the share plates, including the prawns, antipasto and poached figs, as well as the side salad and veggies. The bread(crusty outside/soft and chewy inside) served with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar was perfect. The service was very good — all staff was friendly and smiling. The décor was also pleasant. I originally tried to make a reservation online, but the system said that the time I wanted was fully booked. When I called, I had no trouble getting a reservation at the time I wanted, and we arrived the restaurant was not busy at all. Lesson learned: call to book here and don’t trust the online system.

How else do you start a Saturday night with great sharing plates of Italian food made with love. The meatballs are to die for, our group of 6 had two serves amongst the Spicy fried calamari, crispy potato skins, chickpea pancakes with wild greens mushroom & gorgonzola sauce, tomato basil and mozzarella, Wagyu beef Carpaccio with truffled egg & rocket was a close second favourite. The cocktail list was great and the Salty Sea Dog was the crowd pleaser for my table. Wine list should also wet the palate — serious bottle to be had here If you are not good with stairs you would be in trouble as the restaurant is up stairs and then the toilets are again up more stairs, however once you get the ladies have a very well presented power room — a must see. Totally recommend this is place to even the non Italian eaters amongst your friends.

Tonight was my 4th visit(at least I think) and I regret not writing anything sooner. The food, service and ambience are just superb. I keep looking at the restaurant for ideas on how to decorate my kitchen/dining room. I went tonight for my birthday dinner with my partner. I have to give an honourable mention to Andy(The Maître d’) and Lydia, the wonderfully knowledgeable waitress — master of food description(I can’t think of a more honorary title, sorry) . The food is always fresh, creative and superb. I’ve also been lucky that at each visit the menu has been refreshed to reflect the season. Tonight we had the«Fritella affumicato — potato & leek pancake — smoked salmon — salmon roe» and«Gamberi al vapore — steamed prawns — pearl barley — chick peas — baby spinach — lemon olive oil«as entrée. Followed by «Chatham Island blue cod — spinach — salsa crudo» and«Risotto con funghi — porcini mushrooms — vermouth — thyme»… all I can say about the food and service is «FAULTLESSANDWONDERFUL». It’s also wonderful that the background noise has been baffled by very clever design. My partner is Deaf and needs limited background noise and good light to be able to to lip read. The very discreet ceiling baffles and good lighting are very conducive to this. Thank you La Scala for the intuitive design. I really can’t wait to go back again. LOVELOVELOVE. Thank you La Scala for another wonderful meal and evening. P. S. I forgot to mention, the raspberry and almond tart with pistachio ice cream is an awesome dessert. Make sure you leave room!

Had dinner here tonight. Restaurant was empty. Got there at 9pm, so not sure if that’s a good indication or not. Fantastic service. Really good. Food was wonderful. Meatball entrée which was lovely. Qual main course, again great. Very good all round 4 ½ stars.

Sitting above The Light Brigade pub in Paddington, La Scala is a great modern Italian restaurant and cocktail bar. Traditional favourites are given a creative twist, such as the salt bush lamb rump with greens, spaghetti stuffed tomato and salsa verde. There’s also a great cheese and sweets section. The wine list is as impressive as the food menu, with more than 200 bottles on offer. In fact, the restaurant was recognised in the 2010 and 2011 Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine List of the Year Awards. It’s a really sophisticated space, named after the stairs that lead you to it. So follow them and make your belly happy.

Upstairs from the Light Brigade in Paddington is a great little cocktail bar and restaurant called La Scala. In fact ‘la scala’ means stairs in Italian so if you can speak Italian you could probably work out that a) it’s up the stairs and b) an Italian restaurant. Coincidentally I can speak some very basic Italian and I do work this out for myself and proud as punch I head up ‘la scala for a meal. The food is Italian but very different to the old school family stuff I am used to although I am not complaining for one second. It’s pretty nice! Between my companion and I we sample the veal and sardines for entrée and the risotto and scampi for mains and we’re both happy. So happy in fact that we decide to get an affogato each for dessert which for those of you that don’t know is a shot of coffee, a scoop of ice cream accompanied by a shot of liqueur. Even happier after that, we head down ‘la scala’ and end a great meal at a place well worth trying out.
