Came here today to meet some friends for a double date as it’s a dog friendly place with the outdoor seating and they wanted to see our puppy. Points for dog friendliness. Random anecdote, I always used to confuse this place with the Lumiere residences on Bathurst, which I thought was run by the same company. Whoops. I ordered the toastie bacon pumpkin stack with gruyère and linseed, and others ordered the corn stack which seemed popular. I enjoyed this dish more than I expected, but it wasn’t something that would make me say I have to come back here again. especially for $ 19. The service was fine, but my flat white was mediocre at best. Decent food and good for people watching, but slightly overpriced.

Quite expensive and an atmosphere that isn’t really my cup of tea(super professional). But the corn cakes were delicious and the staff are super friendly. They didn’t charge me for swapping bacon for haloumi which is always a tick in my book. If modern, clean, plastic environ is what you’re after for a café — this place is for you.

Lumiere Style Eggs Benedict($ 19) — liked everything about it except the prosciutto taste like the Australian prosciutto not the Italian ones. We also ordered the big breakfast($ 22) which also looks very good, has everything a big breakfast can possibily have. The restaurant ambience is spacious and airy. Perfect place for a late weekend brunch or friends gathering. The courtyard next to the Café is safe for kids to run around.

My first visit ever. Toast was terrible. Super thick sour dough was dry and limp. Huge amount of vegemite. No butter that I could perceive. Was such a waste of money — for $ 6.50 I could have bought a loaf and made better at home.

Proof positive of the power of Unilocal, one rare morning I awoke before noon and joked to my partner I wanted breakfast. With a swipe of the keys on the faithful Iphone app I pulled up breakfast spots nearby and the pictures for this place looked the most tantalizing. A hop skip and a shower later we were enjoying similarly deluxe looking breakfast goodies. The prices are steep for breakfast but as I said, it’s pretty deluxe, quality ingredients, and really good presentation so I reckon it’s worth it. The space inside and around the café is really funky, for lack of a better word, but in a good way. The seating kind of zig zags towards the interior of the block but you have sunny, bright views of the neighborhood or the center plaza the whole way around with full glass windows from front to back. Service was good too, and if I ever woke up again before noon, I’d be back here for breakfast in a heartbeat.

We were in Sydney for only one night this past weekend and good old Unilocal pointed us in the direction of Lumiere for a breakfast treat. It was a Sunday morning and it was relatively busy inside, which was fine with us as it was also quite stuffy in there and the tables outside made for some perfect people-watching. As soon as we sat down we were greeted by a friendly waiter bearing water and taking our coffee order. As we perused the menu our coffees promptly arrived, and I dove into mine. It was good! For breakfast my wife ordered the muesli, which looked great… but I can have muesli at home any day, so I ordered the Brioche French Toast with maple syrup, banana and bacon… wow! My towering breakfast came out in no time, swimming in syrup with a ridiculous amount of bacon on top. Wait. that’s impossible, you can never have too much bacon. The french toast was quite amazing. The bread was soft and the bacon crispy and it all went together incredibly well. If we’re back in the Surry Hills area again any time soon we’ll definitely head back here for brekkie. Yum! Aw man… now I want some bacon.

My first brunch as a Sydney denizen was everything I am used to from a brunch in my previous urban home, San Francisco. In SF, brunch is not just a meal but a way of life, and most San Franciscans believe that the entire concept of drunken Sunday brunch was invented by them. That point is still up for debate — I can say that even the snootiest of SF brunches would be pleased with the great service, well lit space, outdoor seating, and gourmet dishes. Our table featured the corn cakes with berries, the french toast with banana and bacon(OMG), one salmon benedict, and two Lumiere Benedict’s with prosciutto and grilled asparagus. I must say the two sweet options(corn cakes and french toast) were certainly the standouts. I ordered the Lumiere Benedict, and found it to be a bit on the bland side, and the baguette used instead of English muffin wasn’t very easy to cut through. In general though, the food was splendid and I am eager to go back and try their burger. Funny side note: We were walking across the street and there was an old church with cool stone bricks and a bunch of hipster looking types out front smoking. I thought it was a church that has been converted into a bar or restaurant, so I said to my friend, «Wow, this spot seems cool!» I then realized it was actually some sort of converted living or halfway house. Proof that I have been in Hipsterville SF for a bit too long!

I enjoy the outdoor seating here. They have a good amount of space here both indoors and outdoors. Not too difficult to get a table. Go for the french toast with caramelised banana, bacon and maple syrup. It’s not the best brunch in Surry Hills but it’s still nice. Just doesn’t have the«wow factor» with the food or coffees. Service has been slow and not very helpful the times I’ve gone(not sure if that’s the usual for this place or not).

Holy Batballs the coffee here is freaking good. So good I had to order another one to take away to savour it’s smooth creamy goodness once more. Came here for breakfast after first visiting Deus Ex Machina around the corner and being disappointed with their menu. The café is airy and breezy and we sat outside to people view and we were quickly greeted with friendly waitstaff and menus. The café is right across the road from the Wesley Mission which makes you feel slightly guilty when you’re about to tuck into the tower of breakfast deliciousness in front of you. I had ordered the Corn Cakes with Poached Eggs, Crispy Bacon, Avocado and Relish($ 17) and my bf ordered Eggs Benedict with Bacon, Mushrooms and Chorizo on the side. The size of those mushrooms! I made no secret that I wished I had ordered a side of mushrooms too by helping myself to his as well. Reading the other reviews on Unilocal I think I would be doing myself a FLAVOUR by trying the Ricotta Pancakes and take home a pastry or two. This is a serious contender for one of my favourite breakfast places in Sydney, but I will have to pay Revolver at Annandale another visit to be sure.

Bottom Line — Good place for breakfast or brunch and people watching. Even better place to grab a quick pastry and a coffee. Don’t get me wrong — the brunch food is delicious. McKay had the French Toast of Brioche with Carmelized Banana, Crispy Bacon and Maple Syrup($ 15) — amazing combo of flavours, but SUPER duper rich. I had the Corn Cakes with Poached Eggs, Crispy Bacon, Avocado and Relish($ 17) — also perfect combo of ingredients. Both were quite good. But with Bill’s right around the corner with his signature Ricotta Hot Cakes and Sweet Corn Fritters dishes… it’s tough to compare. What Lumière Café does do right… pastries! I was super impressed by their croissants. The chocolate croissant particularly was miles better than the one from Bourke Street Bakery!

Lumiere means light and this restaurant definitely has that — large glass windows and an open modern feel, this a wonderful place to grab breakky and catch up with your friends… I’ve had mixed experiences with Lumiere over the last few months — sometimes I’ve been there and the food is great, but my last two times i left dissapointed… I had salmon eggs — and it was really expensive and nothing special and its left me doubting my return… They do a good coffee, so until proven otherwise may I recommend grab a latte hold the food.

This café has a great location on Bourke St and is a beautiful, open, airy and, as the name suggests, bright sunny morning breakfast choice. The staff are cheery and helpful and the expanse of the café stretches out over the courtard it sits on. As recommended, I ordered the ricotta pancakes with marscapone, maple syrup, berry coulis and honeycomb. The pancakes look delicious and are easily the most tempting item on the menu. And after the first mouthfull, you feel reassured that you’ve made the right choice. However, as you go on, the faster you realise that rather than pancakes, you are in fact eating what seems to be three scones soaked in syrup. For $ 19. Whilst they were yummy(before I overdosed in sweetness), they didn’t compare to my reigning ricotta pancakes, those of Barmuda in Newtown(review: ). I enjoyed the experience of dining at Lumiere. It’s a beautiful spot to enjoy the day and the food isn’t bad, although the menu is too expensive for what I like to pay for breakfast. $ 7 for an iced chocolate that’s two thirds ice with a splash of milk, a mediocre scoop of icecream and sugary Cottees topping doesn’t impress. Be warned — the café is pricier than their website would suggest as it seems the website has not been updated in a while.

A favourite with the funky locals in Surry Hills, Lumiere is great café for breakfast, brunch, lunch or even just a coffee. Complete with its own on-site patisserie which dishes out french pastries and cakes that are too yummy. Lumiere is always a hit, the café menu features an all-day breakfast and there’s also sandwiches, burgers, pies and pizzas from 11.30am. Then there’s the special menu featuring restaurant quality food including lamb with cous cous, seafood salads, pumpkin ravioli… I’m getting hungry just typing the words. But whatever time you go try the ricotta hotcakes — they’re fab! Grab a table in the courtyard and watch the life and colour of Darlinghurst go by.
