Is there anything better than getting a scoop of something sweet and cold and then walking down to the beach to eat it? The ice-cream shops along Acland Street in St Kilda all offer something a little different and they all have the benefit of being close enough to the beach. They draw in the hot and sweaty things after a day in the sun and the romantic couples wanting to share some gelato during an evening stroll along the sand(*gag*). For me, Trampoline is all about the sorbet. Give me the dark chocolate and a bit of the blood orange in a cup and I’ll happily forget that I’m not sporting a tan from the sun or walking hand in hand with someone along the beach. Love it.

Verdict: St. Kilda, specifically Acland St., is ripe for the picking with gelato and ice cream shops. Unfortunately for Trampoline, they lag a bit behind the competition and bit. Even worse? The competition is about 10 steps away in two different directions. Star 1: How was the service and atmosphere? Not unlike the other shops in the area, Trampoline employs a pair of friendly people who are more than willing to dish out a few free samples. No complaints here. Star Granted. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? It’s in the price department that Trampoline first starts to run into a few issues when compared to the competition. While my medium cup had a decent amount of «gelato»(more on that later), the price came in at $ 6.10, making Trampoline more expensive than both Seven Apples and Scoops Trampoline Medium: $ 6.10 — Seven Apples Medium: $ 5.70 — Scoops Medium: $ 6.00 — Sorry Trampoline. No Star Granted. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? Not unlike Seven Apples, Trampoline really blends the distinct line between gelato and ice cream. While gelato is supposed to have an airy and light texture due to a significantly higher sugar content(albeit less fat) than standard ice cream, Trampoline’s product was far from what gelato should be in that it was indistinguishable from ice cream. Additionally, while Trampoline offered some exotic flavors, many of them were just plain unusual as opposed to appealing. Single Star Granted. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? With a mediocre product at relatively poor prices, I can’t recommend going to Trampoline. For authenticity and quality? Try Scoops. Price? Try Seven Apples. No Star Granted.

Perfectly located in Acland st, Trampoline is just perfect for a hot day. The shop has such a cute, fun look and the colourful sign just draws you in — particularly if you’ve got a five year old; first she sees the sign, then she sees what’s inside and YAAAAY! I’ve got the perfect excuse to spoil myself to an ice cream treat. You have, have HAVE to get the After Dark sorbet. It’s the darkest, tempting most delicious and decadent chocolate treat I’ve ever experienced, and because it’s sorbet it’s less fat. No guilt needed! My daughter got the Smartie Sundae, consisting of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry gelato topped with smarties, choc fudge and cream. All I can say is that it made me wish I was five again so I could order one for myself without feeling silly! The service is upbeat and bubbly and matches the happiness these ice-creams/sorbets and sundaes provide. They don’t do a bad coffee either.

It was a fun day testing out all of the ice-cream shops on Acland St where, on a hot day, I’m a sucker for a good waffle cone. Trampoline Gelato is one of the smaller, perhaps lesser-known ice-cream stores but is easily one of the best. They were very friendly and had a laugh with us when we were all useless at trying to pick a flavour. There are lots of fruity flavours as well as the classics and a few different flavours to keep you on your toes. I judge by getting the lemon sorbet and have to say Trampoline’s was up there with the best I’ve had! Trampoline is what you want in an ice-cream shop where it’s worth a taste on a hot day… yummy stuff!
