Wanting to treat ourselves before the year was over, a group of us decided to treat ourselves by fine dining at the red cabbage food and wine. Located on the busy la bouchere rd, parking is easily found underneath the apartment building containing the restaurant. Despite being a fine dining restaurant, red cabbage food and wine appears out of place due to its location on the ground floor of an apartment/office building. Bookings need to be made well ahead in advance as this place can get very busy. The restaurant offers a $ 89 six course degustation or an $ 82 three course meal. You can also order a la carte but it is advised against as portions are tiny. The menu has limited items for each course(3 – 4 entrees, 5 mains, and 4 dessert options). I ordered the trout with almond and spinach purée for $ 39. My friends ordered the venison with burnt apple and cauliflower purée. The trout was soft and well cooked. However, the almond spinach purée just tasted salty. It didn’t really have much flavour. My friends venison was tough, the cauliflower purée was barely visible but the burnt apple tasted sweet, burnt, and delicious. We also ordered some bread rolls with whipped butter. The bread rolls arrived nice and warm. They were soft and the butter was just scrumptious. For dessert, my friends got the pannacotta and the chocolate mousse. The chocolate mousse was quite strong and bursting of flavour and the bits of meringue on top as well as the ice cream helped balance the strong flavour of the chocolate. The pannacotta was melt in the mouth delicious and was complemented by the caramel sauce and ginger snap that accompanied it. I was a bit underwhelmed by the food but liked the desserts and the bread roll. The service was quite slow and we were only asked once about how we were going with our meals.

I went here with a group for 5 friends for a birthday celebration. We were able to choose the 3 course menu for $ 59, courtesy of the Entertainment Card. This included a glass of prosecco. The décor is rather old world with lots of wood, dark carpet and dim lighting, but lightened by quirky wallpaper featuring rows of human faces. My choice of entrée was fire-roasted Manjimup marron with lemon curd. I don’t exaggerate when I say it was the tiniest entrée I have ever had. It was 2 tiny forks of marron meat and although it was fresh and beautifully presented, I wondered why they bothered. I guess if you are eating a degustation of many courses this would be understandable, but with an a la carte cost of $ 19 and one of 3 courses, it seemed a bit ridiculous. Friends who chose the scallops fared much better. They were beautifully moist and well presented, and were much more substantial(believe it or not!) than the marron. My main course of smoked duck breast with cauliflower and garlic purée was disappointingly chewy. I love duck and eat it at every opportunity but this was nothing like the tender succulent flesh I love. I know that with slow cooking duck normally fares much better, so perhaps this could have been improved with a different cooking method. The four of us who had the duck concurred, but two friends who opted for the fish dish(trout) were happier with their choice. For dessert, we had the option to choose an individual dessert, or share a taste plate(called A Little Bit of Everything) between two. The taste plate with four different desserts was much better value for money so I recommend you go with this option as you basically get 4 full size desserts. I’m often too full to have dessert, so this was an indication of how small the other course sizes were. Between 2 of us, we were able to polish off our entire plate of desserts. The pumpkin pie dessert was our favourite, with the others being pleasant without being memorable or special. I had been waiting a long time to visit Red Cabbage, and I have to say I was disappointed by the whole experience. Whilst the service was good, the food was average, and I don’t understand why restaurants charge $ 5 for a small bread roll when places like Must Wine Bar provide the most amazing French bread and butter free of charge. I doubt I’ll return to Red Cabbage with so many other better dining experiences in Perth.

I really enjoyed my experience at red cabbage, of course it’s a little pricey, but I guess that’s what you go there for really! We had the three course meal deal and each got to pick an entrée, main and dessert, share a side and bread roll to start :) food was delicious! And very creative! The dessert ‘a little bit of everything’ is a must! Yum! And the staff were great! It’s refreshing to see hospitality staff to be attentive!

Went on a Thursday night in a party of 7. Had the pork crackle, fried pork neck as entrees to start and the ocean trout, smoked venison, flank steak for mains. Also had the dessert tasting plate. The service was extremely slow, and the entrees were a bit disappointing. The mains were decent although perhaps a bit inconsistent(venison was sometimes medium) and desserts were a bit hit and miss. Portions are tiny for the price. Wouldn’t revisit.

A good effort but in the end a bit Underwhelming. We came here to celebrate finishing end of semester exams at uni and left feeling a little perplexed. Why is that? Was it the service? Was it the décor? Was it the food? No … no … unfortunately yes. Service was amazing and professional as any other degustation destination we have been to in WA. Décor was classy and stylish and was also therefore not an option. The food well … to be fair the presentation was spot on … your mouth watered looking at what was on offer on the plate in front of you … but … when you finally put a portion of it into your mouth … there was no amazing explosion of flavour as is normally the case with degustation dining experiences. This is where I feel a little let down in my experience dining here the other night. A pity as what I had read online and in the paper suggested otherwise. Everything done to perfection but just nothing special happening when it came time to actually eat the food. By this I mean the food tasted goodish … but not amazing. A real shame as there is positive feedback on this business and I hope it was maybe just an off night in the kitchen.

Wasn’t my favourite meal, there meals are way to technical and are not very easy on the pallet. Second time around and still disappointed.

Perfect food with sublime presentation and an excellent wine list. I honestly think this restaurant bests Amusé, and provides a much more comfortable and intimate setting at a considerably cheaper price. Probably my favourite restaurant after The Loose Box

I am one of those embarrassing people you take out to dinner and keep asking questions about what the words on the menu mean, this is a restaurant where you should take your dictionary out with you, well unless you are accustomed to fine dining, unfortunately my fine dining days are on hold until my children understand the words«Shut up and sit down». I loved this menu, it was exciting and it was great to be offered something different. However I still find it pricey for what you get, I guess not by Perth standards but by world wide standards this didn’t really compare on value. We could have eaten in some pretty posh restaurants in Melbourne or even Europe for this budget.
