This bar isn’t cool or hipster or even fun. But they do have 3 things going for them: 1. A legendary happy hour: 5 til 6pm they make all tap beers, house spirits and house wine half price. You can pick up a pint of little creatures pale ale for $ 5.50!!! Unheard of in Perth. 2. There is a shit tonne of seating. For a very small place they have taken advantage of the space and you can mostly find a small table. It gets packed in happy hour. They also let you reserve tables. 3. The service: it’s fast, easy and I’ve never waited more than 2−3minutes to be served. They play the football on TVs and have DJs playing music — neither impress me, but due to the above I’ll continue coming here from 5−6pm on Friday.

I was here on a Saturday night for a birthday. From 8 – 10.30 we were pretty much the only ones in there. Its not really a place to meet people more of a place to go for a quiet drinks with friends. Its also pretty small in there, but finding seating is not an issue. The staff were friendly and offered countless suggestions when I had no idea what I wanted to drink. My friend had hired out a area of the bar for her birthday but you could probably get away with not hiring as it didn’t get packed inside and it was more of a small area on the side with chairs.

Rubix looks the part with modern and stylish furniture, great lighting and fancy wallpaper. It is in a great location on Murray St, although a little on the small side. But it just lacks something. Maybe personality? Or substance? Which makes the Belgium Beer Café across the street seem even more appealing. They often have live music, but there is no room to dance and at my visits very few people to enjoy it. They have an average range of beers and a good range of cocktails. This is an ok place to start the night, with a few quiet drinks, but not for a good night out.

Rubix lacks personality. It looks the part with modern décor and live music. But it is like the barbie doll. Not bad to look at, but lacking any real substance behind the pretty façade. The beer range is quite small. The seating limited, although I have never seen it particularly busy, so maybe that is not a big problem for them. Too many other great options within walking distance to waste too much time here.

Rubix has a lot of potential to be a sweet place. Prime position on Murray street. Well that’s really where it ends. Its a small space with one bar and not that much seating. There are often bands or DJ’s playing in the front room but the venue isn’t exactly conducive to dancing, so any tunes other than lounge are wasted. The one positive i can think of is the drinks as they have a nice mix of cocktails for patrons to choose from. Otherwise probably not worth sticking around for more than a drink or two.

The last time I was at Rubix was on a random evening during the week, there was a band playing but they were only playing in front of two 30ish year old ladies. My friends and I felt sorry for the band and they sounded ok so we went in and decided to stay for a beer or two. The beer selection wasn’t outstanding and my mind kept wandering to the Belgium Beer Café located across the street. The venue itself is small and has a lot of potential with modern-ish décor but for whatever reason it never really gets very busy.

Rubix is a small bar on Murray Street. The only reason why I went there was due to its lax dress code — while many of the bars in the vicinity have a strict dress code, Rubix didn’t care how you looked, as long you had the money to pay for the drinks. Unfortunately for Rubix, it is located opposite the Belgium Beer Café, which is stiff opposition. In comparison with the Belgium Beer Café, who offer some interesting beers not often found in Perth, the beers on tap at Rubix are rather pedestrian. The best of their beers was James Squire Golden Ale [or, if known by its new name, «The Chancer”], while the only drink that was out of the ordinary was their Five Seed cider, which was the first I had encountered the drink. Décor-wise, Rubix is nice, although nothing outstanding. There is a TV playing music videos, and a small stage for solo or duo acoustic acts to perform. There is also alfresco seating for those preferring to drink outside. Overall, Rubix is a nondescript place with little to entice patrons, except for those who are wandering around in casual clothing.

I’ve been to this bar twice, and though it looks great with its lush lounge-y décor — all flocked wallpaper, high stools and intelligent lighting — there’s something missing in the ambience department. The bar staff are very friendly, giving their honest opinion of which cocktails they do and don’t like themselves, and the music is a nice mix of chill evolving into dance as the night progresses. Apparently they have live acts here, which would likely add to the appeal, but the only thing I’ve seen onstage recently was a fashion ‘runway’ show where the clothes looked like something out of a Dotti catalogue. Strange, because the patrons were dressed rather well. I think Rubix should take its namesake and go all out in Eighties décor and theme. Give itself a point of difference. It could make for a very cool retro bar — but with the DJ playing white label dance tracks containing Eighties samples, waitresses dressing up like they’ve exited a scene of ‘Dynasty’, bar staff serving bright fluoro cocktails… something more themic and fun.
