The Rocket Room

If there is any club/​bar/​venue that makes me feel at home, it’s the Rocket Room.
It reminds me so much of the dive bars I used to frequent in San Francisco. And by frequent, I mean desperately trying to get in with a fake ID just to listen to some mediocre band and drink a flat beer. Those were the days, kids.
Thus my love for Rocket Room flourished and I come here more often than not. I come for the laid back atmosphere, the various mix of people and of course, the strippers. The boys and the girls put on one hell of a show.
The Rocket Room isn’t posh, trendy or upscale and their drinks are nothing to write home about, but I’ve never had a bad night out here and I never expect to.

Arriving in Northbridge on nights out I’d often seen a queue forming early (before 8pm!) outside this place, but always feared to try in because it looks a bit scary from the outside — it’s really just a door on a creepy Northbridge corner.
I had heard whisperings and seen posters about it being an ‘alternative music venue’. Turns out all this is simply a cover up to keep people from knowing the truth, the real truth…
Every Saturday from 8pm to 12am the Rocket Room transforms into a Willy Wonka Wonderland of, well, see the word before Wonka. It’s a male strip club! I tried it out last week for a friend’s birthday and, oh my heavens, it’s like the movie Magic Mike came out of the cinema screen and into my life!
Every hour on the hour one of these brave guys gets up on the small stage or the bar top and gives the ladies in the venue their money’s worth (only $ 20 cover charge), with a little crowd participation. But if you’re feint of heart you don’t have to watch what’s happening on the stage — the best part about it is, while they’re not giving a show, the topless, ripped men stroll around the bar, chatting to groups of girls, having a dance and letting the over-​excited females grope their biceps and take pictures.
If you’ve ever been angry at your boyfriend for going to a skimpy bar or to Xotica, then this is the sweetest revenge!

The Rocket Room promotes itself as Perth’s #1 live band venue, and for the most part, they are not exaggerating — there is original live music pumping from the venue most nights of the week. Many bands have tread the stage at The Rocket Room, and since its refurbishment, it is easier to see bands nowadays.
At heart, The Rocket Room is a rough-​and-​tumble venue with an average drinks selection. The bands are a mixed bunch, with an emphasis on the rock end of the spectrum. It’s great to see a venue fully supporting the local music scene, although The Rocket Room can feel trashy at times.
