I’m not sure how I have not written a review of this place yet. This is hands down my favourite live venue in Perth. It is owned by Artrage, the same people who bring us the Fringe festival & the Rooftop movies so you know it is good! There is always a great live show happening nearly every night of the week. Good beers on tap, a large outdoor area & two indoor areas to boogie away in. The owners of the land have unfortunately put it up for sale so the future of the Bakery is uncertain. We can only hope the new owners recognise the value this place adds to this otherwise dead end of Northbridge. Make the most of it while you can, and with the Bakery becoming a Fringe Festival venue this year throughout Feb it shouldn’t be too hard to find something that interests you

Despite its location behind Metro City, The Bakery offers a variety of alternative music from local and international acts. The outdoor area makes good use of old sea containers and astro turf. They have Cooper’s Pale ale on tap for $ 8 so what’s not to love?

Currently my favourite place to see live acts and relax with friends and have a beer without some of the hustle and bustle of other night outings in Perth. There is a few reason this place sticks out from the rest First being the type of crowed it pulls, mainly because they only are open for smaller type shows the musical tastes are usually quite specific in terms of genre of music and/or other performing arts being held. This is why you get people who generally wont to be there for a specific performance. It holds a wide mix of local acts and some international ones which you can purchase a ticket prior so you wont be lining up for hours because it’s a capacity. Special mention to the large beer garden! Being run by artrage they do get government funding which is also a fantastic for the smaller NB community who want to steer clear of the terror that is Aberdeen street. You have to take the good with the bad, just don’t let the negativity of some comments about this only being a place for«hipsters» sway your decision to attend something at this fine venue. In my option if you are more worried about the types of clientele surrounding you and its effecting you personally then the Bakery would be the least of your worries.

Attended the Radiothon event on Saturday. Doesn’t look like much from the outside when you are on the street but the inside is another story! The outside area is surrounded by shipping containers stacked two high, the bottom ones have been cut open to create two undercover spaces for seating with some cosy areas tucked away at each end. The other container has been converted into a bar to service to outside area. The outside lighting has multi coloured large hard plastic bags and containers adorning each globe as a light shade of sorts. Some of the seating has been covered in the fake grass you usually see at mini golf places and there are wooden stools and benches of different shapes and sizes too. Inside there is a decent size stage for bands to set up and the floor to ceiling red curtains absorb the reverberation really well. Inside also is another bar, plenty of space to fit a decent sized crowd without the packed in like sardines feeling. Another container is at the side filled with couches and chairs away from the music if you are looking for a comfy place for a beer and conversation. Overall a very good set up for watching live music.

Hard to find, its located on the«other» side of James St, behind Metros in the city. For someone who doesnt know where it is: you have to get lost to find the place as the entrance is in an alleyway tucked behind a carpark! Inside: As a photographer — the stage lighting for bands playing there is pretty dull. The upside is there is a variety of small, up and coming bands, mixed with some national acts. and sometimes they have cheap nights for bands playing, which means there might be a pleasant surprise for someone who parted with 10 bucks for the night

The Bakery is the kind of performance space that I love and reminds me of going to gigs back in Ireland and the UK. It is basic with a hint of edgy and hipster décor thrown in to keep everyone happy. It is definitely one that splits the opinions. There is a undeniable downfall in the sense of roof cover, especially when its raining and unfortunately for us the winters rain arrived with force last night and the large space outside the gig area was a little surplus to requirements and left a little bare of bodies. I was not so impressed with the crowd as the constant talking during Huskys set was infuriating but whether this is common or not will have to be proven in the future. Regardless, cheap pints for Northbridge which is great but then you do have to drink them in plastic cups, a common no-no. A venue of dichotomies but for now I like it, in all of its confusion.

There are real mixed reviews on this one, so I thought I would contribute my thoughts. I enjoy this place, I go here quite often for gigs. I think it is a really good live venue, I mean the sound isn’t perfect but the ambience and the space is great. From the outside it looks like a load of shipping containers. You walk into an outside area, with fake grass and fake grass seats. The outside area is really chilled and great place to sit and listen to the music, without being at the for front of it all. They sell white rabbits too which I am a huge fan of. The inside is where the stage is and I have seen some amazing live bands here, In fact I am going tonight for a music launch. I went here for the Wami awards last year and it was perfect for that too. I am a real fan.

The first time I went to the Bakery was to see a burlesque show put on my Sugar Blue Burlesque. Having believed all the hype about the performance space/trendy bar from locals in on the best place for a tipple and a show, I had high expectations of the place. I’d love to say I found the most kick-ass establishment in town, but truth be told I found the experience a bit blah. Major snaps to Artrage for providing an incubative space for local and international talents, but I found the whole set up slightly confusing. Don’t patrons usually use the front entrance rather than the back door? I wasn’t too mad about the décor either. A little too rustic for my liking. Any venue that has those awful wooden school chairs that give you splinters is a miss in my books.

I remember when i first wandered in to The Bakery for a gig that my sister was photographing, I though«Its official, I am now finally a hipster». The whole joint is made out of shipping containers with the entrance via the alley behind, ughghh Metros City. This however adds to the whole indie feel of the place, and as a man if i rocked up without skinny jeans, a flanno shirt and copious amounts of unkempt facial hair i would be out of place. Anyway the venue itself is great, in particular for live music. I saw the Panics and San Cisco and the gig was intimate, the sound was great and the crowd was engaged. The bar moved quickly and it was easy to get a drink, although the bar selection is limited. A great venue for gigs and DJ’s I am looking forward to the next opportunity i have to go!

Head around the back of the car park, down the ominous back alley, and enter into the building made of walls of sea containers. By that description you’d think you were meeting with a mob boss or doing some dodgy deal, but no you’re just heading to Perth’s most creative bar/club/nightlife space. It is a popular place for Australian bands to play, DJ’s to spin their decks, artists to exhibit their work and filmmakers to play their films. There is so much creativity from the venue to the artists hosting it’s inspiring. There is a rabbit warren of areas inside so you can have some privacy with your friends and sit and create the kind of atmosphere you’d like, I always find it a challenge to locate the toilets, which are somehow funky and creative too. There is the main bar inside with the stage and all important dance floor. Outside you can see the sea containers frame the stars and enjoy the seating area. It is a different place to head to on a Friday or Saturday night where you can discover a new band or artist and soak up the creative atmosphere that surrounds you.

You’ll find lots of skinny jeans and loose vintage shirts at this popular music venue and night spot. It’s a welcome addition to the Perth night scene, offering foes of the more mainstream establishments another outlet for their drinking and dancing pursuits. I only know The Bakery for its indoor live music space and outdoor drinking garden, both of which tick the right boxes in my opinion. I’ve seen some of my favourite bands play here, and the energy is always pulsing. The sound is great and the space is cool, dark and intimate. Highly recommended as an alternative to Amplifier Bar or the Republic.

The Bakery is one of the Perth’s most interesting performance spaces, supporting artists of various mediums including music and installation art. While used for a variety of artistic expressions, music is where The Bakery shines. The entrance to the musical performance space is at the rear of the building, past the carpark(the front of the building is for visual art pieces). The renovation from last year has rendered The Bakery into something that is akin to a spaceship, but considering the artists who grace The Bakery’s stage — artists who have a tendency towards the avante-garde — the décor suits the music perfectly. Acoustics-wise, The Bakery has a very good PA and all instruments can be audibly heard. The sound easily travels through the walls and into the outside area, so that if you are outside, you can still hear what is happening(or choose to enter the venue). The performance space is also generous, giving both patrons and artists plenty of room to move around. The Bakery features a full bar, although the selection of beer is limited. They do have a decent supply of drinks from Little Creatures, if you are a fan of the brewery. The Bakery is a unique performance space in Perth, and many of their acts are worth checking out.

Don’t be mislead by the name, The Bakery showcases some of Australia’s top music talent as well as major international bands. This live performance venue is also used as an exhibition space where they support local and national artists for both forms of art. It houses a mixtures of creative expressions, giving it a real unique vibe compared to most nightclubs and bars in Perth, starting from the structure of the venue, as it has an additional indoor stage and bar. It is a great venue to visit, whether your checking out the contemporary art, having a casual drink or seeing your favourite bands(I can not wait to head there this weekend to see Mr Flash), and thankfully it is located right near the train station.
