Milton Centro is my local area and Avant Garde fits in just like a local should. Unassuming and underrated, it is by far the superior café(supplier of devilishly decadent pastries) in the Milton Centro strip. The coffee is balanced and bitter in the right amounts. Whether you’re stopping for breakfast, lunch or morning/afternoon there’s something for everyone. They claim to have«the world’s best breakfast wrap. Period.» The other reason these guys get the nod of approval is for their multiple gluten free options — across the board. Often you’re left with a mass dose of FOMO when you’re friends order gluten laden noms, but not here. There’s equally delicious options for those of us waging the war on gluten! Plus, who doesn’t love their morning takeaway served with a smile.

I shop at Milton Centro on a regular basis, and I’ve never stopped in at Avant Garde Patisserie until the other day. Yep, I’ve been missing out. In amongst IGA, a busy pizza place, some bakeries, and some giftware shops, you wouldn’t really expect an exceptional little café/bakery/patisserie. At Avant Garde, you can choose from the day’s pastries and slices that they so nicely showcase in their display window, or you can settle in for a wholesome meal and a nice, warm cup of coffee. I dropped by for breakfast and had avocado, feta, and spinach on sourdough bread and it was amazing. The ingredients, and the avocado especially were so fresh and had a burst of flavour the second I took a bite. The meal was of average size but it fills you up nicely. I also had a very nice flat white and chatted away sitting there for about two hours because the atmosphere was that enjoyable. You can settle in like I did for a filling breakfast or brunch, or grab one of their lovely coffees on the run. They do eat in and takeaway and their lemon meringue, let me say, looks very impressive. They also do wedding and birthday cakes, and you can view their menu online.
