Someone suggested a business meeting here. I’ve not spent much time in this area of the city, but it’s easy enough to find. I really liked the layout, with an indoor and outdoor option, coffee re-fuelling station, breakfast/lunch place. Service was pretty good. My iced coffee was room temperature(but it was a scorcher of a day) and they happily added ice and offered to go further and re-make it if needed. Didn’t try the food, but I’d go back for sure.

Great casual place to get a bite. Was pretty hungry and had the red wine beef stew with side of veggies and it was satisfying. This is a popular place with locals and the outdoor seating is nice.

Good café for a quick lunch. Not a bad coffee in the mornings and close to Peter Mac! The selection of cakes is awesome, but it can get a little busy and there is no real line structure. The outdoor seating is heated in winter but in summer it is lovely outside.

Somewhere just out of the city lies the commune; hidden in amongst State Parliament house territory, and the park Hyatt. There’s also an influence of corporate types/ office workers near by. Thursday night is Jazz night, every week, showcasing some traditional Australian jazz– swing, bossa, classic numbers etc. It’s small and intimate inside with sit down table seating. The commune also has a large area with plenty of seating outside. Basic meals and drinks are available throughout. If you need some space, you’re able to expand outside. The commune is located along st Andrews place, which is handy if you’re on the 112.

The Commune is geared to its clientele — corporate types and public servants located in the nearby Treasury Buildings. It’s prices are likewise matched. It tends to lean towards the expensive side for a workday lunch. The range of meals is extensive. You can buy the usual focaccia and wraps but there is also a wide and varied hot food section, including curries, stews, stuffed capsicums and seafood dishes. The coffee is not the best in Melbourne and you wouldn’t go out of your way for it. It’s not the cheapest either. It does a nice jazz night later in the week, and the windows opening to the outdoor section is pleasant when the weather is fine. There is also a full bar for those so inclined.
