My favourite coffee at this end of the city, always consistently good. They also stock Short Stop donuts on Fridays if you’re in need of a fix, get in early as they sell out quickly.

I like to support passionate business owners and this was a great example, the man in the flyers is the guy serving your coffee; despite being a rather small outlet he offers at least a few breakfast offerings the expected muffins and croissant plus a rather interesting muesli cookie which is how I went. The coffee was great, strong and warm but not bitter or likely to burn your tongue; the cookie was taste but dense and a little too much to handle for me. The owner was friendly, suggested paying after I finished since j was eating in and made some good conversation with me and his regulars — definitely worth a try.

Coffee is the star at Altius! This lovely café, in true Melbourne style, is tiny with only a few seats available. There are fresh flowers in vases and trendy mags placed artfully around. The space has a minimalist design — white with sharp furniture. It is situated in the new mini-precinct called«The Archway», along with T by Luxbite, Five and Dime bagels, Delhi Streets and more. Worth an explore if you have time. I ordered a latte($ 4) and my friend ordered a delicious looking raspberry and chocolate cake and a long black(around $ 9 together.) My latte was excellent and was served in a very cute cup/saucer of minimalist design. Though, $ 4 to me seemed on the steeper side of what I would pay for a coffee. My friend enjoyed her cake, which was massive and looked nice and rich and chocolate-y. The staff are really friendly and when my friend spilled her coffee, they automatically made her a new one free of charge and helped her get cleaned up, which is really nice. We spent about an hour chatting and it was relatively quiet. Nice and peaceful. Visit Altius if you are in the area for a nice place to get your coffee fix and maybe read a book!

Altius Coffee Brewers is a bright little space with a bar and a few seats. I enjoyed their black filter coffee which they made with beans roasted by Market Lane.

After a hard morning’s shopping, more coffee was in order. I used to work in this part of town and it’s nice to see some nice places cropping up where it was once a bit of a no-man’s-land. I stopped off at a(relatively) new place on Flinders Lane between King and Spencer Sts called Altius. They don’t serve food apart from a few cakes so it’s all about the coffee. They use Market Lane coffee and it’s great. I had my usual double shot latte and now have a pleasant taste in my mouth(literally and figuratively). I will definitely be back whenever I’m in this part of the city. Oh, the staff are friendly and chatty too.

When it comes to coffee this end of town is a bit of a wasteland. Altius make damn fine coffee(beans from Market Lane) and serve it in the most delightful hand crafted ceramic cups to be enjoyed at one of the few seats they have, or if you’re like most people, to take away. Choose your moment carefully and you could have this place to yourself to enjoy your coffee and read the paper while basking in the beauty that is this storefront.

I love how tiny this place is — it gives me a great minimalistic vibe. Great spot for a quick coffee catch-up and better for take-aways(they actually have a very tiny space). The barista is very friendly, which is always a plus in my book, and the coffee is wonderful. In terms of food, I do believe that they only serve pastries. I’ve yet to try them but they did look very delish.

Going on crazy goose-chases in city’s to find venues I’ve heard are good is not uncommon. My early-morning walk to the opposite end of Flinders Lane to sit within the serene and minimal walls of Altius Coffee Brewers was no exception. Located in the same building as The Grain Store, Altius is small but mighty in the coffee they’re pouring. Ideal for the take-away crowd there is a small table within the café that is ample for up to 3 adults to sit. Luckily, I was the only customer when I arrived and was easily able to perch upon a stool to enjoy a flat white. I over heard the barista say they were a specialty coffee café to another customer during my visit. It’s apt. These guys aren’t going to provide you a breakfast fry-up, they’re most certainly not going to add syrups in various flavours to your coffee and I’m going to be that if you uttered the word«decaf» you may be promptly ushered to the street. These are career coffee brewers and it reflects in the product they serve. Speaking of serving, if you’re inclined to notice ceramics, admire their matt white cups and saucers. While I’m sure it becomes quite a hive of busy coffee hunters later in the day I was thankful my visit to Altius was one shared with but a few customers. It was the gentle and calming start to the day I needed.

Oh Melbourne, again with the swoon-worthy coffee shops. This place is gorgeous. Banging coffee from Market Lane(seriously, the filter I had here was my 3rd for the day I was still left wanting more!) served by two lovely baristas in a very pretty little café space. It’s designed mostly for take aways/standing room, with a single communal table to fit a couple of solo coffee drinks. No more than two groups of two could sit inside, but there’s also some little ledges outside. I sat inside with a colleague and they cheerily gave us new cups of water every time we were out. They even offered us some delicious cold brew when they made a bit too much for themselves. Perfectly attentive and let us take our time. They have also started serving Shortstop doughnuts — the perfect coffee treat if you need a sweet fix. This is one of the first one many new businesses set to change up the landscape of this end of Flinders Lane, so there’s plenty of reason to visit again and again. Definitely one to check out.

I should really have got some photos when I visited here. I was taken by the layout, the quality coffee, the beautiful cups and exceptionally friendly staff. Great space. Clean tiled walls. Small seating space for 5 – 6 people around a communal table. Directly opposite The Grain Store in the same building. Small selection of cakes by Little Bertha in Abbotsford. Espresso was spot on. Tasty, sweet. Partner had a flat white and remarked it was equally delicious. They’re using Market Lane espresso and filters roasts here which is where both the staff hail from. A really cool space. There’s another recent specialty coffee open just around the corner, however Altius feels more personable and refined right off the bat. Will be back for sure. Highly recommended.
