Cute place, delicious bagel. Had the one with cream cheese, onion and meat, it was great. Fresh bagels too, the bakery on display was a great touch. Also were playing them crooked vultures, which was an excellent album choice.

Check in on Unilocal before placing your order and get 10% off! Large flat white + cinnamon ‘babka’ = $ 9.50. The spot is known for its boiled(NY style) bagels but I came for a mid morning coffee and something sweet. I lived in Montréal for 15 years, so aside from St. Viateur bagels I don’t eat them anywhere else. On top of serving different flavour bagels with stuff, 5& Dime typically have 3 – 4 types of fresh pastry on hand. Average prices $ 4 for most sweet baked goods. Ordered a flat white, coffee is within the range I call decent. The cinnamon roll(babka) was ok too. It has a pronounced taste of another spice I can’t put my finger on, which I’m not so into. Noise level exacerbated by bad acoustics. Not fun to sit in. I read really good Unilocal reviews for this place but sadly I don’t share the enthusiasm this time. For me, 5& Dime was a tad more than just passable… People in Melbourne are used to mediocre food is my guess.

Having become slightly addicted to the real deal in NYC, it is good to know you can get proper boiled bagels in the CBD. What I like about this place is you can get take home(unfilled) bagels and you are not charged sandwich shop prices. They have a rotating selection of donuts and pastries, and even challah bread sometimes. The staff are friendly, and if you go later in the afternoon you just might get a bonus little something with your order.

My 4 year old and my husband love bagels, my son and I were in the city so we decided to drop in. We were so glad we did! These bagels were great, according to my son they are better than the ones we’ve had in New Jersey and New York on a recent trip. My husband disputes this — mainly because they’re smaller than the ones in the US. I thought the bagels tasted great, soft and chewy with a bit of sweetness, I had mine with cream cheese which was piled on and I like less than that so just scraped it off. My son requested that we takes some home and freeze them, he then ate 2 more throughout the day. We’ll be getting these regularly as I don’t work very far away. The service was also great! Both the people we dealt with were really helpful and friendly, an absolute pleasure(we were there at around 10.40am — 11.10am on Friday Nov 6 so thank you to the two people working then).

Good location, great range of bagels. So really enjoyed the onion and everything. A little off the beaten path but in my opinion worth a visit.

Currently in Melbourne for a work trip and it was the closest breakfast place near my hotel. The store is very clean and well presented and being able to see the bagel making process is a nice touch. I ordered the pastrami in sesame bagel which was quite nice. There was a decent amount of pastrami however at $ 11 I thought it was quite expensive.

I’ve had this place bookmarked for a few weeks as I’ve heard it had the best bagels in town… I disagree! I made the pilgrimage to visit this place and couldn’t wait to get stuck into it but when I unwrapped my pastrami on rye bagel all I was filled with was disappointment! 1 slice of pastrami and a couple of pickles for $ 11 I felt robbed! The bagel tasted fine but come on guys fill it up a bit!

Tucked down an alleyway is where you will find this haven of bagel delights. It is part of the new-ish Archway precinct of cafes and restaurants. I seriously think the bagel I had here is one of the best I have ever had. I’ve been to New York and had bagels there and this beats that. Go Melbourne! The lovely Wanda helped me order and made the bagel! I ordered the Lox($ 9.50) and it was so damn good. Lox, tomato, onion, cream cheese, capers… Great value! The sesame bagel was chewy and slightly crunchy. Just the way I like it. I am seriously impressed and will be heading back soon to try everything else on their menu!

Came here for breakfast after my friend apparently had breakfast 3 days in a row here. I just got back after spending some time in the states getting addicted to Tompkin Square Bagels and Russ & Daughters in the East Village so this is probably a hypercritical review. I had an everything bagel with smoked trout(?) cream cheese, tomato, onion and capers. I would’ve gone with my classic lox, cream cheese, onion and capers route if it wasn’t for the fact that they didn’t have lox/smoked salmon that day! There was only vodka & ginger cured salmon, I mean kudos for the creativity but nop, not at 7 oclock in the morning. The smoked salmon/trout cream cheese filling was rather scrumptious, I wish the tomato/onion/capers/radish option wasn’t free though, pretty sure I only got a sliver of each on my bagel. I’d rather pay an extra dollar and get more than 3 capers… Good enough for a quick early morning bagel fix though

After hearing that 5& Dime had some of the U.S.A.-style best bagels in town, I went with an American friend to check ‘em out.(We kinda have the monopoly on good bagels in the U.S.). Down a laneway, past more cool food businesses than I knew were on the western part of Flinders Lane, you’ll find 5& Dime. Inside the décor is rather streamlined, all white and wood, with small tables for lunchtime eaters. I would’ve like to have seen a titch more colour on the walls to pump things up a bit. The place was bustling over lunch, with many an office-goer coming in for a quick grab’n’go. The prices are super reasonable for Melbourne — I think a bagel is something like $ 3, with various cream cheese fillings only a little more. A great, quick alternative to a 7 – 11 sandwich or the usual sushi. Did the bagels live up to our Yankee standards? Not quite — my companion’s ‘everything’ bagel lacked the overwhelming flavour punch we’d expected, and her cream cheese was on the stingy side. In the States, the cream cheese is around the same thickness as the bagel itself. My corned beef sandwich was enjoyable, although not quite the same texture as home. So: American bagels? Almost there, but needs a few tweaks. Melbourne-style bagels? Spot on.

If you are a bagel whore like I am, you must come here. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $ 200. Insert another random Monopoly saying here. And go to 5& Dime Bagels. There is a decent selection of traditional bagels you can choose from and plenty of New York-style fillings. I personally cannot go past the ‘everything’ bagel with smoked salmon and avocado. Oldie, but a goodie. They also do a rocking latte. If I worked near here, I would be here everyday. It hurts I can only go here when I trek into the big smoke from the burbs.

I spent six months living in Montréal as a teenager and after eating hundreds of bagels, I became slightly obsessed. On my return to Australia, I was disappointed with the quality we were able to get. They just weren’t the same, though I still bought them and tried to fill the bagel shaped hole inside of myself. I bought a caramel coloured Burmese kitten and called it Bagel; such was my obsession. 5& Dime’s Bagels are made in the New York style, which I’ve also come to love after visits to the US. I first started buying their bagels at farmer’s markets and love that I can now visit the store in the city to sit and eat a bagel slathered with cream cheese or filled with the likes of smoked turkey or pastrami(there’s two daily sandwich specials). The store itself it small, and no doubt there will be a line if you visit during peak hours, but it’s a straightforward process and the line moves quickly enough. Don’t expect your bagel to come toasted. These bad boys are so fresh they don’t need it.

5& Dime is the closest you can get to a New York Bagel in Australia. Delicious boiled then baked bagels that are just as they should be, slightly crispy on the outside and chewy in the inside. So good that they do not need to be toasted. While 5& Dime offers a small selection of spreads cream cheese, lox(smoked salmon) etc, it’s really all about the bagels here. without a doubt these are the best New York-style bagels in Melbourne(much better than Glick’s even). While at 5& Dime, be sure to also get a rugelach – it’s like a jewish mini croissant shaped pastry filled with chocolate goodness. So good! Note the shop is quite small and a bit hard to find, down an alleyway, of course, near King Street. If it was in a better location(ie on the other end of the CBD) I’d go daily!

Excellent fresh bagels made onsite. Lovely staff offer bagels fresh, with flavoured cream, and coffee via machine or batch filter. I’m not sure whether one can get the bagels ever so slightly toasted but that would be the one thing I would like next time I visit. The filter was nice and my dill bagel with horseradish cream was super.

So this store is something I wish we had back in Adelaide! Bagels are one of those things that you really need talent and training to make perfectly. 5 and Dime mixes talent with passion. Minimalist in store, but the star of the show is the product and being able to see the bakers at work! You have an awesome view of the kitchen. You almost feel like you are witnessing art taking form. Staff are friendly and easy going. I munched down on a poppy seed bagel with cured salmon, a heap of house made cream cheese and avocado. What can I say? Fresh and perfectly made. Simple comfy flavours and food. Just like a bagel should be. Also, I was full up to get me through my morning. I will recommend this to my friends on a visit to Melbourne. Keep it up!

I went on a hunt for 5 and Dime Bagel Café after seeing an office mate devouring one in the lunch room last week. The café is a beautiful little place in The Archway just off Flinders lane near the Spencer street end of Melbourne’s CBD. I ordered the dill bagel with scallion and horseradish cream cheese topped with salmon and red onion. Friendly staff and amazing bagels, I can’t wait to try the sweet ones too next time and order a few to bring home to the fam.

I’ve been trying to get my husband interested in bagels for years: I’ve only just succeeded and it’s thanks to the massive bag of 5 and Dime bagels I lugged home last week. These are proper bagels like I used to get in NYC, chewy, flavourful, not too soft, not too hard. I can’t tell you how important bagels are to me. Growing up I ate bagels with cream cheese, lox(smoked salmon), and all the trimmings for Sunday brunch every week. Up to now, I haven’t been able to find a quality bagel here in Melbourne, so 5 and Dime has me very, very excited. You can buy your doughy treats to take home or enjoy a sandwich with free fillings and house made cream cheese. I agree with Tomas Z. that the bagels would be better toasted but they are high quality so even«cold» they are still delicious. They’re slinging surprisingly good coffee here, both espresso and(yay!) filter. Everything is reasonably priced and a coffee and a filling bagel sandwich shouldn’t cost you more than 8.50.

It’s a strange world we live in when I can safely say I have had better 5& dime bagels at other cafés than the ones I have had here. Don’t get me wrong — they are all made here so logically they should all taste the same — but the way they prepare them just does not live up to the bagel goodness they could be dishing out. For example when I order a bagel from Bowery to Williamsburg I get it freshly toasted and slightly crisp but still chewy in the middle(as it should be). Also the cream cheese or other toppings taste fresh, healthy and delicious. When I get the same here and see them just open a tub of average tasting cream cheese, sprinkle some random toppings on and wrap it up I don’t get the same sense of value or taste. I do like the staff, they are very relaxed but not overly chatty, the interiors are a little plane but it is wonderful to watch the working bakery right behind the counter. Coffee is good. I just think they need to up their toppings game to make me choose this place again over countless other great bagel options in the city. Still worth checking out.

Be still my beating heart of bagel desire. These beautiful boys have taken the next step and blessed Melbourne with an amazing, Melbourne worthy bagel café. Hidden along atypical Melbourne lane way is where you’ll find this rolled and baked bagel heaven. The space is small but opens up to the hidden lair of bagel creationism. With pure pleasure you can enjoy a coffee ad watch these baked good gods create their art. There is a variety of bagels on offer. From the classic poppy seed to the Everything! The emphasis here is on clean, crisp service an locally sourced products. You see these mantra in the soft wood settings and items such as Hepburn Springs mineral waters and sodas. The little coffee bar is pumping out delicious promised land beans. A small boutique roasters from Collingwood! Not only are the staff super friendly so are the prices. For $ 8 I had a plain bagel with cream cheese and a latte! This place will be bustling in no time at all once the office crowd fall upon it.
