Beautiful wine and beautiful food… what’s not to love about Penny’s Hill winery and restaurant? Lunch could not have been more pleasant; wine tasting to begin with from the Cellar Door, and then a delightful lunch overlooking the McLaren Vale countryside through a large window. There is a more casual area adjacent to The Kitchen Door Restaurant, but we chose the main restaurant and enjoyed friendly, professional service. We were offered the choice of the tasting menu(where a series of dishes are brought out for $ 65) or the A-la-carte and elected the latter, choosing house made bread and a main course each, both generous and delish. Didn’t have time nor appetite for dessert, but can’t imagine being disappointed if anything like the rest of our experience. Feel lucky and privileged to have access to the quality of wine and food being served at this establishment. Just wish it was possible to visit more often! As Molly Meldrum used to say, «Do yourself a favour»!

We caught this winery on a bad day as they were just completing a kitchen refurbishment and thus missed out on a promising meal but this was not their fault, just our timing. What made up for it was fabulous service, a good chat, someone who was able to attend to a few customers at the same time and still make you feel welcome. They offer three different ranges, not just Penny’s Hill, and thus cater for various tastes and pockets. Having said that Penny’s is superior and their top of the range reds are astounding. The cellar door is simple in design and quite open/large but retains a warmth and feels inviting. Lots of glass and great open views add to the experience. There’s lots of space outside for a picnic and the location, whilst just off the main road, is great in that it’s just out of the township of Mclaren Vale, and on the way to Willunga. Looking forward to our next visit when we WILL eat something.

What a fab winery… great location, great service, great food and great wine! The winery is set the fields and vineyards of McLaren Vale and includes several out buildings, as well as the main building including wine tasting area and restaurant. The restaurant serves fantastic food from full meals to seasonal tasting plates paired with the wines, the menu changes every few months and reflects lots of the local produce. The restaurant has excellent table service and helpful staff. The tasting area is large and includes a bar like area and a few seating areas to relax with a glass and a cheese plate. The winery not only has the Penny HIll range of wines but also Mr. Riggs and Black Chook. This leads to an extensive tasting list and there will be something for everyone. The bottle prices are very reasonable too and will be one of the reasons you go back for more!
