When I used to sew and make clothes for myself this was the first place I headed to, this was back in the days when they were located in the city. Later they moved to their current location into what was a dark, horrible, dated building, for a long time. But business must be looking up as they renovated and opened it up to have a complete glass front. It is so popular that no matter where one lives, they are willing to travel just to buy their fabric from here. No competition in this location, no Lincraft or Spotlight. Almost any fabric you can think of is here somewhere on a roll. A good selection of buttons, thread, velcro, zips, etc and also a costume section. The service had improved along with their English because it was once quite basic and you really had to know what you wanted without their assistance. To a degree it’s still a bit like that. Apart from that, it has good prices and looks alot better visually.

This fabrics store has the heavy cloak of depression hovering just above your head somewhere. I severely dislike the atmosphere in this store, the same feeling I get when I walk into those little discount stores, it’s like it’s so cheap it’s sad. I can’t explain it any better than that. So that said, it’s a good place to get discount fabric I guess, although if you ask me you can see why it’s discounted. I can’t say I’m much of a seamstress but if I was I would be going somewhere and buying material that was worthy of some sort of creation. I’m pretty angry that these guys don’t stock plain white silk for painting, what if I don’t want to sew huh? what if painting is my gig? It’s a decent sized store, you will find what you need but not altogether what you want.

I like to go to conventions. One of the biggest things about conventions is cosplay. A lot of people look at it as a bit of a sad preoccupation, as did I before I was forced into it one year. Ever since I’ve really enjoyed dressing up as various fictional characters. The problem with cosplay is the actual costume itself. You need the right material to make sure your costume looks JUST right. The wrong shade or the wrong type of material can ruin a costume. Well if you’re checked out all the other stores, pay a visit to DK Fabrics, because the place is enormous. The other reviews mention the size of the store and they really aren’t exaggerating when they say how big the store is. Sadly they still didn’t have the dark heather green velvet I needed but what they did have was amazing. They also have what appears to be the largest selection of buttons in South Australia. With that said though, I’ve seen bigger selections online. But I’ll stop there before I get into the advantages/disadvantages of online stores. If you want something specific like I did then you might not luck out. If you want a browse to see what they have available then you could spend hours here!

This place really does have every type of material you could ever need! If you are having a wedding or formal dress of any kind made you should definitely go here to get the materials. You never know, you may find something even better than what you originally went in for. No matter where you live this place is in a quite central location close to the city and worth the drive. As well as their fantastic, enormous range they are also really well priced. Service has always been good but they do get busy sometimes as it takes a little while to serve each person and cut the lengths they require. However if you bother to make the trip and find what you want you don’t mind the wait at all. I have bought great materials from here for formal, costume and everyday clothing. Never had any issues with their materials either.

DK Fabrics has an amazing range of materials at great prices. Brought up on a strict diet of Spotlight and Lincraft(all we had in my home town) I was blown away by the prices and variety in this store, dedicated only to making clothes and costumes! Every time I come here for thread or material to make a costume, I see fabric on special and I start trying to find reasons to need it. This is my stop for all things sewing. They have a good range of over-locker thread and a wall of buttons. However, it’s the material that amazes. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in this cavernous place, then I doubt you will find it anywhere. Furs of all colours and patters, patterned fleeces, dozens of heavy duty, serious looking woolens, then hundreds of metres of lace, satin, cottons, rayon, mesh — then a stretch version of each. They helpfully display complementary fabrics together, for example, a coloured lace with appropriate linings and other matches. There is also a great wigs, hats and masks section, beside a huge variety of ribbons and trimmings. This place is costume queen heaven. I spent ten minutes pondering how I could possibly require a $ 75 double hoop under skirt, or even better, the $ 120 hoop skirt with heavy tulle for extra volume. I hope there is a DK fabrics for me in heaven.
