Hive is not your standard café. I mean, sure they serve coffee(locally roasted Nessun Dorma) and food so you may be saying, «Lani, it sounds like a standard café to me?». And you’d be part of the way right. While they have all the same mechanics of a standard café, what others don’t have that Hive does is Danielle Dixon at the helm. Danielle, the owner, brings her own flair to the daily-changing menu at HIVE café with menu items like her notoriously decadent and delicious Celebrity Cakes including The Fat Elvis(chocolate, peanut butter and topped with bacon) or the Kim Kardashian. I heard that one broke the internet. But there’s plenty of savoury options too — salads and sandwiches — all rotating depending on what is in season and what is creatively inspiring Danielle and her team. I’ve stopped in a few times now for take-away coffees, lunch kebabs on the go(if it’s ever back on the menu order it!) and I’m eagerly awaiting the Christmas pudding I’ve ordered from HIVE’s catering menu that I’ll pick up on Christmas Eve. In the always cool venues that surround the café, it’s refreshing that HIVE is a place to be yourself regardles of the labels on your clothes and enjoy a great coffee while doing so.

With ‘kitch’ the in-thing at the moment, it isn’t everyday that you get to visit a place that can actually claim the title of properly unique. But Hive has something a little extra about it that makes it stand out from the rest. Be it the friendly and attentive owners, the dedication to sourcing and serving interesting products you won’t find elsewhere, or the bomb diggity cooking magic going on in the kitchen, introducing your favourite people to Hive promises to make you so cool that you are guaranteed to be picked first for the team; next time you find yourself in a high school gym class. Bacon Elvis cupcakes… oh my heart aches at the sight! Yum!
