Gertrude Street Minimart is open at odd hours, often late, which is really handy, particularly because it has a bottle shop section. Don’t bother shopping here for fresh produce, though, as there is only a fridge stocked with some rather sad looking and overpriced vegetables. It does have an okay Asian produce section, with a variety of good sauces and marinades. Otherwise, it’s all pretty standard 7-Eleven type stock.

I miss living around the corner from the Minimart, or Celebrations, as the bottle-o section of this place is named.(You have to say it like a madman though — CELEBRATIONS!!!) It’s the little corner store that could, stocking every weird little thing you could possibly need — and it has booze, which is always a bonus in such an establishment. Spirits, wines, beer by the six-pack and the carton — CELEBRATIONS!!! has it all and will serve it to you with a bit of a lopsided smile and a grumble. No, this is no prissy little grocer, it’s a relic of the old Fitzroy, run by a ragtag mob and still often populated by those picking up an early bottle of sumpin sumpin. Some people won’t like that, but if Fitzroy loses places like this it will be just another Malvern with no heart.
