Carousel has been popping due to the fact that the sun has decided to peek its head out for once! The place itself is kind of a bit unappealing and has that vibe of been waiting for a good summer to come along and revive it. People obviously haven’t been going there as much but recently on a 30 degree day it was finally alive and crowded with people where nothing is better than an ice cream on a hot day! I love their cool, novelty signage where hopefully the sun can stay out for them and people can continue to get some yummy ice creams from there. I have a feeling their opening hours are subject to what the weather is doing as well…

Maybe it’s the childhood memories of balmy summer nights spent with dad and my brother, walking from home to Carousel to claim our baby scoop of ice cream. Perhaps it was even the walk back, rich chocolate drips finding their way down my sleeve, awaiting my mum’s disapproving scrubs. It could have even been the hundreds of birthday cakes that Carousel catered for throughout both my and my friends’ childhoods. You remember the one — chocolate biscuits crumbled through the centre of two thick layers of creamy white vanilla. It was the biracial cake we all should have received at one point in our lives. I’m not sure if Carousel still takes the cake(oh god, she went there) for best ice cream. I think the product is too drenched in happy memories to be the recipient of any impartial grade. I do recommend it as a trip down memory lane, and if you haven’t been then visit the child within or even start some memories for your own children.

If you love ice cream and cake, Carousel ice cream cake company will be like a true godsend! After all, this ideal cake destination marries two good-on-its-own desserts and pairs it up to become a ridiculously cool party treat. My first bite into one of Carousel’s ice cream cakes was at my nephew’s 2nd birthday and since then it’s become one of my favourite party cakes. In fact, I often suggest having a party just so we can order a cake from here. Okay I admit I’m big on the sweets but you have to admit, this childhood favourite excites even the worst critics(who doesn’t love ice cream) and helps you stay young at heart. Okay, so that’s an exaggeration but I really do think that cake(especially ice cream varieties) from Carousel are good for the soul. And besides, it’s a great idea for spring/summer parties and is so much more fun than conventional cake.

I spent roughly a full week in the lead up to my birthday last year searching for an ice cream cake. The shoddy imitations wouldn’t do; generic brand ice cream with a few sprinkles on top was all that the supermarkets seemed to offer. Baskin and Robbins took a week to prepare a plain vanilla version. Not good enough. The classic Carousel model is what I was looking for. Think thick creamy icing, a marbled interior and layers of crunchy chocolate biscuit. Heaven. When I think of childhood birthday parties it was just one Carousel cake after the other. But somewhere over the past few years the proliferation of Carousel stores that used to be scattered across Melbourne have diminished drastically. The Acland Street store no longer exists, as I was devastated to discover. You’ll now find the only Carousel stores in Elsternwick and Bayswater North. When I finally came across the Elsternwick store I felt like I’d rediscovered an old classic, never again will I suffer another ice cream cake-less birthday.
