Welsh Cafe

There are conflicting reports running through the family tree at the Pilla household, and this may or may not have to do with the fact my mother is its spokesperson.
On one side, I’m Italian — no question (it’s where I get the name, if you didn’t know). But on the ‘other’ side, I’m Scottish, apparently. It’s where I get the red hair, apparently. Indeed, we can trace back our lineage to William Wallace (Mel Gibson), apparently. But then I’m also Welsh. And Irish. And British. And everything else on Albion. And Aboriginal, no less. Apparently.
So I came to the Welsh Café to get in touch with my roots, which spider from the bottom of a dark and obscure tree. And I could find absolutely nothing Welsh about it, beside the name, and one or two dishes which are native to Wales. Apparently. And this leads me to believe the title’s there to reign in suckers like me, who indulge their parents’ fantastical stories because they want their ancestry to be more interesting than it actually is.
But it’s a decent café, despite the identity crises.

The Welsh Café has been doing well for itself, and rightfully so. Huddled in a small complex of shops on Cross Roads– just think where Big W Cumberland Park resides– the Welsh and their crimped fries have landed small town success, well in my eyes anyway.
The Welsh Café is a relaxed joint, and the entire staff at Big W like to venture here on their lunch breaks, and on a regular basis. I should know because I was once one of them. In other words, there is fan base for this café and a legit reasoning for it!
The open yiros is the big hit, but then there are a bunch of other choices willing to entice such as lasagna, burgers, hotdogs, pies and the list goes on. It’s also priced well, and the serving size is a substantial amount.
Nothing overly fancy here, just good service and some good grub. Worth trying this place out instead of the other «same old» Goodwood options, such as the Maccas and Subway across the road.

When you go to a café that’s named after a certain part of the world you would expect it to be a reflection of that. If I go to a restaurant with «Italy» or «Greece» in the menu I would be hoping that on the menu would be a nice assortment of items from that area of the world.
Not an unreasonable expectation, right?
Well, the one and only problem I have with the Welsh Café is the lack of Welsh food. I didn’t know what Welsh food actually was, but after doing a few Internet searches I didn’t see much that was on the menu at this café. It’s not completely lacking in Welsh food, but it’s not overflowing with it either.
Let it be said though, that this is the only criticism I have with the place as the food was wonderful. It’s made fresh on premises, and you can see them make it. That’s a big thing for me, I don’t know why. I enjoy cooking and preparing food, so I guess I like watching food being made too.
Don’t let my criticisms put you off visiting this café if you’re in the area. It really is quality food and the staff really care about whether you enjoyed your meal, and that to me is more important not being Welsh enough for a Welsh café.
