Its been quite hit or miss the several times weve been. If its a bustling lunchtime… don’t set your hopes too high for good service or food. Nobody seems to mind otherwise because… location location location. The people and pup –watching can help take your mind off just how long youve been waiting for a table or for service or your food. It doesn’t seem the kitchen or staff can cope with big pushes during those peak times… expect to wait quite awhile and your $ 20 salad may or may not be palatable(friends slimy beet and runny goat cheese salad today). On good days, the service is friendly, efficient(the lovely young GM takes care of business) and you can get some fresh, yummy meals worth the $ you pay. Worth a visit if you can time it right.

I’ve always loved visiting this café for a few reasons. Firstly it has lovely outside seating overlooking the beach. The food is always fresh, well presented, interesting and most importantly tastes delicious. Particularly enjoyed the risotto! Lovely service, a good selection of wine and moderate prices. Highly recommend.

My Australian friend brought us here for lunch because it was decently rated on urban spoon. I have to say that I’m pretty disappointed though :( Firstly, many items in the menu were out. Mostly salads and pastas, which left us with very limited options. Sydney Rock Oysters — These oysters were not fresh and the brine were still left in the shell, making them very salty. Yucks! Pancetta salad — Very good! I love how the lettuce was fresh and sweet. Must order! Pappardelle fresche with rosemary roasted pumpkin, mushroom, asparagus, pine nuts and feta. — Ok. A little too heavy for my liking and portion is hugeeee. Definitely share with a friend if your appetite is small. Overall service is pretty good. But the prices are pretty expensive even for lunch menu :(

I’d like to like Barzura because the location and the vibe of the restaurant are fantastic. However, I just watched 5 of my colleagues eat their meals as I sat around waiting for my pasta to arrive(pasta! how long could it possibly take?!?). 3 of them were finished by the time I received my meal; that’s how long. The food itself was nothing impressive either — I had the chicken pesto pasta which had maybe 3 bits of chicken in the whole thing and was absolutely swimming in sauce. You would think that if a restaurant forgot your order and made you sit while everyone else at the table ate, that they might comp the meal or at least discount it. But nothing. Barely even an apology. I won’t be going back any time soon. I’m just glad it went on the corporate card!

What more can you ask for in a café? Awesome view of the beach, great coffee, great sourdough, and Australian bacon. I wish I could come to this place every time I wanted brunch. And then go for a walk or swim in the pacific. Prices are totally reasonable for what you get and where you get it too.

While living in Randwick, coming down to Coogee on a lazy Saturday morning for brunch or lunch at Barzura was one of my favorite things to do. The food is good, the view is amazing, and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. This is actually also where I had my first kangaroo. After months of refusing to eat the adorable creature, my now-hubby convinced me to take a bite. I have to say that I never looked back and will now eat those furry hopping pests any day of the week :) Of course, I wouldn’t have been convinced if it hadn’t been cooked perfectly at Barzura, which it was. And I have to say that not every place cooks it well. Although not all the food is amazing, it is consistently good. And that, along with the view, made it a place that I often came back to. Parking is a little hard on the weekends, but if you keep trying, you will probably get lucky.

On my last morning in Sydney I met a couple of friends and their baby for breakfast at Barzura. Located just near the beach, there are breathtaking views to be had here. Barzura is massively child friendly — almost every table had a kid or two whilst I was there and the vibe was very community oriented. The staff are relaxed and didn’t bat an eye as I waited alone at a table for a few minutes until my companions arrived. Along with the requisite egg dishes, porridge and hot cakes, I was delighted to find I could have nasi goreng(Indonesian fried rice with chicken, bacon, peanuts, chilli, coriander and fried egg) for my morning meal. If I lived anywhere near Coogee, Barzura would definitely be a regular morning hangout. It strikes me as the perfect apres yoga spot and a generally good place to have a leisurely catch up with friends.

I didn’t eat meat for a year. I was on a vegan trip and I just wanted to see if I could do it. Then one day I felt like a steak. I had been at yoga at The Living Room in Coogee so it may have been the tempting aromas wafting in from the restaurant downstairs. Then I made a decision. I was going to have a steak… and it has to be at Barzura. Luckily it is the aforementioned restaurant located underneath where I was, so not far to walk. A picturesque setting. The end of a quiet road and looking out onto the boardwalk of Coogee and it’s beautiful ocean. You hear the waves lapping and it is clear you are in some sort of paradise. The steak is heavenly too. Thank god! Just what I needed after a year without it. This was the place I tried kangaroo for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I dug it, so they really know how to do meat. A little on the expensive slope for the simplicity of the food and you have to order sides separately. A bonus though is their specials from Monday to Friday 5−7pm. I have listed them for you however they may change, of course. I just want you to get a gist of how great they are, if you can get there early enough! Mon — Big bowl of local black Mussels, tomato, chilli + 2 Heinekens. Tue — 6 Sydney rock oysters shucked to order + 2 gls Taltarni sparkling. Wed — Grilled jumbo garlic prawns with garlic butter + 2 gls Pinot Grigio. Thu –2 bowls of roast chicken and risoni soup + 2 gls Tempranillo. Fri — Fish and chips + 2 Heineken. All 22 bucks. Sah-weet!

It was my first visit to this restaurant and it was clear from the moment I entered that this place is a local favourite. I went at 11.00am on a Wednesday morning and the place was packed… with a queue! I got take-away coffee and Baked Field Mushrooms on Sourdough. The groovy female staff joked along with me as I asked them to hold the Goats Cheese(what is it with putting Goats Cheese, which actually tastes of Goats on vegetarian food?! Vegetarians don’t like the taste of animals, chefs. Get it off!). I went with their suggestion to substitute with avocado and it was delicious. The serving was massive though and at $ 13.50 I would have preferred to pay less, to get less. I had a 15 minute wait for take-away as it’s clearly not their core business for breakfast. I can see why though, with the perfect view, why rush off? The dark wood interior has a mish-mash, driftwood feel and was perfect for the beach environment, giving a hint of how cool it could be at night. I reckon it goes off in the evening and can’t wait to read reviews confirming that. Seek it out.
