One of the best udon houses in Sydney and they keep on getting better with new added soup favour once in a while. The tempura sides are excellent too. Good value for a generous amount of quality food.

Was super busy for Saturday lunch, and had to wait a solid 10 minutes to get our bowls of noodles. Personally, I thought my Tonkotsu Udon was just average and I’d prefer the Mappen version in the Sydney CBD. However, Marukame is still a great place to grab a cheap meal in Chatswood. Bowl of noodles plus a generous serving of prawn katsu added up to less than 15 dollars, plus you can go crazy with the tempura and spring onion toppings!

Phenomenal. Bravo. Hats off to these guys! Cheap? Tick. Friendly? Tick. Srumdidlyumptious? Tick. This place gets it right, it’s a small sacrifice waiting in line, but you get ample time to debate which fried treat you’ll purchase with your udon! The condiments are plentiful, as others have mentioned, the seating is great, and I just love the Japanese lady at the checkout — so sweet, she bows every time! Makes lunch just that little bit more pleasant.

Solid choice for a quick meal but definitely not the«best udon» option like the other reviewers claim. While I’m impressed with the speed and set up of the store it has nothing on ramen options/quality in New York(Totto Ramen, Ippudo etc). The broth is very salty and take this as you will but feeling very parched after eating ramen means that there most likely is one very unhealthy ingredient in the soup… Regardless, it is a very solid option for a quick meal but don’t expect authenticity or amazing food.

Simply best Udon in Sydney and it’s cheap! The Udon is freshly made onsite and it’s delicious, smooth, firm and bouncing. The soup or dipping sauce are simple and tasty as well. BTW, unlimited tempura flakes and spring onions for toppings.

While in Sydney, my cousin wanted to take us to this great udon place that opened up not too long ago. It’s located just a few blocks from the Chatswood train station. We didn’t know until we got there that this was the very same Marukame that we had in Honolulu, Hawaii just hours before we hopped on our plane to Sydney just a week prior! Of course we wanted more! This menu was a little larger than Honolulu’s branch, but they didn’t have musubi here. We finally got to try the curry udon, as it wasn’t available at the time in Hawaii. We also added a piece of sesame chicken, which was my favorite. It was a huge piece, enough for three people to share, and it was so crunchy. This location is smaller, but very new and clean. The ordering counter is also shorter. It’s a quick and cheap meal if you’re on the go, and you can’t beat the noodoos.

Had no idea udon is so popular amongst the Japanese that Udon restaurants are becoming the next Ramen restaurants. You order your dishes and they make it on the spot so you can see all the action behind the food preparations. They don’t have as many selections as the udon place in the city(Menya Mappen) but the quality is just as good if not better! At least if you order the Beef Curry Udon you can see the beef! They also have a good array of Tempura sides for those that don’t get filled up by noodles(like me) and my personal favourite is the Vegetable Tempura mix.

This place is amazing! My husband and I have been here twice in the past week and loved both visits. We had the Bukkake udon with beef as well as the tonkotsu udon which were both delicious. The broth is full of flavour and the noodles are cooked well. The only slight let down would be the tempura which is not as crispy as I would like. The place is very busy especially at night but the line moves quick as it is a ‘get in get out’ restaurant. Simple food served well. Great addition to the Chatswood dining scene!

I visited the one in Honolulu and thought their udon and tempura were delicious, and it was a total surprise that I found this one while walking down the street in Chatswood.(I admit I’m more of a tourist who lived in the area when I was very little and just visiting to see what has changed.) There was not a line yet as my family and I arrived before noon. The place is clean and has two floors, but I guess all the tables will be taken easily once the normal lunch/dinner crowd hits. I ordered the bukkake udon, vegetable tempura and sesame chicken. Love the udon(not too soft) and the veggie tempura. The fried sesame chicken was big, but not tender at all and somewhat lacked flavor. Other than the chicken being a little disappointing, I’m still very satisfied with the portion and the price. Wish there was a Marukame in California.

The udons are great, but personally I think they should keep less fried stock ready to serve, and fry more often… tempura is a million times better if served hot.
