On entering I couldn’t help but be comforted by the sight of an armchair and couch sitting by the window. I ordered the pancakes with figs, nuts, honey and a side dollop of yoghurt. It was a little too sweet so I ordered another flat white, this time a strong one. There were only a handful of customers around so the barista and I struck up a conversation. He was telling me that sometimes it’s hard for him to make a perfect coffee in the customer’s eyes because often what they order and what they actually want, differ greatly. He gave me an example of a woman who asked for a weak cappuccino. No matter how weak he made it, she just wasn’t happy. It was only after she had lost her temper, and was in the middle of unleashing her furry on him, did she reveal that a weak cappuccino in her mind meant extra foam. My strong flat white was great, and I made sure to tell him so.

Sandwiches! So many sandwiches! And all so delicious! Figs used to be my regular Sunday-Morning-Hungover-As-Hell cure with their incredible chicken sandwiches(and ham, and roast beef) and smashing coffees. Plus, they didn’t seem to mind as I laid my head on the table in pain. These guys are great, unpretentious, under the radar and very, very cool. They have a gorgeous courtyard out the back which is sensational in summer, and a full bar is available if you are a hair-of-the-dog kinda person. Of course, they don’t JUST serve sandwiches there is a full, delightful menu available with daily specials. Lots of light pastas, burgers and other yummies. Figs makes me wish I still lived in Carlton North… and that I could still lay my weary head on their tables.
