It’s a nice looking place and we’d been eyeing it up for a coffee date for ages. Sadly the coffee didn’t live up to expectations, not even close. Even as a double shot it was bland. I won’t be coming back.

If you’re looking for some delicious, fresh, flavorful food for brunch, this is the place to go. The side salad with the vegetarian open face sandwich(sorry, can’t remember the name of the dish) is so filling. The staff are great too, they are happy to be there and are engaging. We stopped in to fuel up and research for an upcoming trip to Italy using the free wifi. On the first visit the server had lots of suggestions for us. When we came back a second time they remembered we were leaving soon and wished us a happy adventure. If I am ever in Melbourne again I will definitely come back.

Birdie Num Nums doesn’t compromise on quality just to give you and your kids a great place to eat. The food here is amazing and the coffee exceptional. These guys are into their coffee and they always make sure that it’s great. There is a sandpit and a stack of toys in the courtyard out the back, which is protected in case of rain. During winter they crank up the outdoor heaters so parents and kids can still use these great facilities. They get a lot of mothers groups in here, too, so if you are thinking of coming with a group then it is better to book ahead. Pram access is also great. An awesome spot.

The name of this café has gone right over peoples heads!(Sam M, please take note!). The name is from a line in an old Peter Sellers film called«The Party». In the film Peter Sellers(a guest at the party) is at the party and talking to a macaw(a type of large parrot) through its cage and he keeps saying to the parrot«birdie num num, birdie num num»… Anyway, its just one of those classic lines that the film is famous for — a bit like James Bond saying«The names Bond, James Bond»… In any case, I know that this is what the place was named after — it was never originally created as a name to make the place sound child-friendly! The café was originally owned by former Richmond footballers the Bowden brothers(Joel and Patrick) however I have no idea whether or not they still own it. As a lifelong Richmond supporter I knew this and had wanted to go to the café for quite a while. Well, today I got my chance! I went along with my 2.5 year old twins to meet up with my cousin and her 9 month old baby. She suggested that we meet here because of the sandpit(which I had no idea existed). The front room is just like any café — but a good version of «any café». It has large tables and there is a lot of room for eating, resting you elbows or laptop or newspaper or whatever. There is a lot of room to spread out if you are having a working lunch or meeting people to discuss some sort of project or another. It has a really really nice feel. The courtyard out the back(which up until today I had no idea existed) is very big — it has lots of tables and a large sandpit with a shade cloth over it which prevents little kids getting sunburnt. The adults can sit and yack and the kids can play in the sandpit til their hearts are content! The food it good quality but it is expensive. The all day breakfasts are nice and there are numerous vegetarian and healthy options. There is also a kids menu with meals around the $ 6 mark. The adults food is between $ 15 and $ 20 which I consider rather a lot for breakfast… All in all it is a nice café and I intend to go back again. However the prices are very high even though the quality is high too. If it was cheaper Id have no hesitation giving this place 5 stars, but because it is so expensive, it gets 4 stars from me…

Since my sister had a baby I do tend to notice child friendly places as apposed to non child friendly places, although mainly when I am with her. Anyway this place is one for everyone. The interior is large and has childrens books in the bookshelp, the courtyard is large and features a bar and sandpit. something for everyone really. The breakfast menu is extensive with specialty breakfast on the weekend. Gluten free bread is available and there is a good range of vegetarian meals. The lunch menu looks delicious there is also a daily specials board including soup, pies and pasta and for those on the run, look in the deli fridge for their signature house made produce. The staff are very efficient, I was there on a weekday and had great service and their coffee is good. So if you have a pram or even if you don’t head along to see for yourself.

There are few cafes in the WORLD with such a gag bringingly appalling name as Birdie Num Nums. I mean c’mon, are they just screaming out for every new mother/nanny/stay home dad to bring their fucking screaming brat inside for a fucking baby chino or what? Besides that, the café’s actually pretty good, though I reserve my visits to take away coffee lest I be confronted by the aforementioned screaming children. It’s kind of a weird strip here and it’s almost café-less, so they do provide a service(and a much needed one at that). The coffee is consistent and they have some great little snack foods(muffins and the like) for dudettes/dudes on the run. I guess I should respect the fact that through their name they warn you of what may be inside. But I’m of the strong opinion that children and cafes don’t, won’t and never will mix well. Just like when you see some idiot child pour milk in its orange juice. It’s just fucking wrong town.

When my sister wanted to bring her hyperactive offspring out to lunch in the area, I immediately suggested we head to Birdie Num Nums as it has a reputation for being kid-friendly. And, thank goodness, the café lives up to its reputation. There is a big play area in the back, so the kids just kinda cut loose and we forgot they even existed. It was great! The food and coffee was great too — I was blown because I had been expecting to eat babychinos and peanut butter toast. Other great things about Birdie Num Nums: they do breakfast foods all day, it’s licensed(who doesn’t need booze when in the company of children?) and the service is outstanding. Yes, it’s up the weird end of Nicholson Street with that big bus depot, but I’ll happily travel here again.

Birdie Num Nums offers a relaxed, fun, friendly and family — orientated meeting point for all walks of life(or so says to website). My experience didn’t have children in it, or does just yet, but I can see how it would work. The food is delightful, with a focus on local and fresh produce, and the window side bench with its strange marble-esque appealing finish is a great place to watch the world go by.

This Nicholson St café is renowned for being the most child friendly in all of Melbourne… As a twentysomething this frightens me a great deal, however if you have children I imagine this might appeal to you. Despite the constant presence of kidlets running about, Birdee Num Num’s can certainly impress the adults too. Creamy coffee’s, beautiful sandwiches made daily and some very tasty muffins — freshly baked each morning! The team that works here are fantastic — always a smile on their faceand very welcoming. They remembered my regular coffee order after only a few visits! My guilty pleasure? The decadent little cupcakes. YUM.

Melbourne, you may or may not know, is a city renowned for its café culture and excellent coffee. Certainly, even the remotest petrol stations seemed to do an excellent brew. Being spoilt for choice is a bit of a luxury for me when it comes to coffee, so I had to narrow down the choices to something a little more manageable. One of my regular haunts was the large outdoor seating area of the intriguingly-named Birdie Num Nums, with a cup of tasty flat white — the standard Melbourne white coffee or, if I was feeling particularly jet-lagged, a long black — like a strong Americano. As well as doing excellent coffee, Birdie Num-Nums also has a tasty range of all-day breakfasts(very useful when you’ve just gotten up at four p. m), as well as the usual range of lunchtime deli treats and sandwich fillings, all with a slight hint of Greek(from the Greek couple who own the place). The only minor disadvantage(from my perspective — a major selling point from many, many others) was its child-friendliness; there seemed to be a Mothers and Toddlers meeting around the sandpit(yup!) in the outdoor bit every second day. But who am I to begrudge the newly-Mum’d their caffeine? Attractive, friendly staff, a seat in the sunshine and excellent coffee will have me coming back any day.
