My boyfriend and I were walking his dog when we passed by this little shop and he suggested that we get fish and chips for dinner. I told him to surprise me, so he went in and ordered while I waited outside with the dog. He ordered barramundi and chips to take away. When we got home and sat down to eat, I was surprised to find that there were two large pieces of fish and a smaller piece of fish(that’s about the size I usually get when I order fish and chips at the uni refec) on top of a mountain of fries. And I meant a mountain. The chips were fresh — lightly salted, not overly greasy, delicious. The fish was flavorsome and really well cooked, not flaky or greasy either. It also came with two generous pieces of lemon, which I was very happy about. Boyfriend says the calamari is good too — definitely coming back soon to try it!

The servings are generous, the people are great and the operation is clean, efficient and smooth. The décor and seating is basic and nothing that I’ve had here is prepared in a particularly special or out of the box way but what is done is done very well. The fish and scallops sometimes tend toward being overdone — but they are crunchy and deep golden brown. This is consistent and a bit less cooking might be nicer. The fish burgers have plenty of the main ingredient and chips are crunchy tasty. One main thing stops me going here regularly. I want them to stop selling the Orange Roughy that sits front and centre in the cabinet here(labelled as Roughy and Deep Sea Perch — a misleading name). It is long lived, slow to mature and overfished without the ability to recover. These fish take between 20 to 40 years to reach sexual maturity and live for up to 150 years. Large clustered populations are netted on sea mounts when they congregate to breed. It is irresponsible to sell it and this fish is not even great for deep frying as it is a very light flavoured delicate textured flesh, not firm and flaky. Even though the general ambience does not do the cooking justice It is for the money the best seafood place around this area. Overpriced competitors do not have the same quality of food.

I don’t usually get fish & chips but when I do, I’m completely fussy and annoying about it. There’s nothing worse in my mind than bad fish & chips. With that in mind, I have to say Rainworth Seafoods and Take-Away is one of the best fish & chip places I’ve been to. The chips are always cooked to perfection and I’m not even kidding when I say that! However, I’ve had some other things from here like whiting fillets, nuggets and scallops which have been nearly burnt to a crisp. I’ve only tried their fish etc once because of this experience but I’d like to blame it on a bad day :) It’s definitely amongst the top for me, if they can not burn my fish and nuggets next time it’ll be at the top! The service is efficient too — you never wait too long. It’s definitely worth the visit, even if it’s just for those chips cooked to perfection, covered in chicken salt… ahhhh…now I’m hungry… :’(One final thing, it’s a very good thing this place is far far away from where I live…

Another fine fish and chip shop in the suburbs. They are doing a lot if things right. Quality fish, good chips, value for money. I would recommend take away as the faded broncos signed posters circa 1994 and tv blaring channel 9 news really don’t give it the best ambience. The family packs advertise themselves as coming with salad, but it appeared coleslaw was your only choice. But then you don’t go for fish and chips to eat the salad.

Look, I don’t often dole out 5 stars but my only fault with Rainworth Seafoods is I no longer live around the corner. The fish is fresh and even better, freshly cooked, the chips are awesome and you won’t spend $ 50 to feed every one(which is the shocking reality at a lot of fish and chip shops these days). If you’re lucky enough to be a local I have to assume this is already your local chippy, otherwise you are seriously missing out.

Rainworth Seafoods & Take Away is a favourite amongst locals. Who would think that amid the leafy surrounds of the inner west, you’d find succulent, perfectly salted sea treats? The deep fried ‘delicacies’ presented in the long fridges look good enough to eat while raw. They keep their display stocks looking plump and plentiful. I don’t think I’ve ogled a dim sim quite like I have while at Rainworth Seafoods. The fish is fantastic. Your fish will cost you between $ 4– $ 8 depending on what you get. You can get it crumbed, battered or grilled(GRILLEDYAY!). Health nuts who are on a bit of an indulgent splurge will be happy to know that they only use cholesterol free cooking oil. They’ve got your seriously old school classics like chiko rolls($ 2.40), battered sav($ 2.40), pineapple fritters($ 1.20), and crumbed sausage($ 2.40) up for grabs. Now, I don’t know exactly what a ‘seafood bite’ is(6 for $ 4.50), but I’m sure if the folks at Rainworth Seafoods cook it, it would be a tasty explosion. I will finish on the obligatory rating of the fat bombs(chips). The minimum is $ 2.50, and that’s a generous serving.

I grew up in Rainworth and saw this place instantly change from one of the dirtiest grease holes in the inner west to one of the best fish and chip joints in all of Brisbane. If I could only find a place on the north side that compares to Rainworth Seafoods I would be a happy man. During my university years I gained a lot of extra love for this place because of its fresh seafood, cheap prices and generous offerings. Its great to see nothing has changed. Every time I get a chance to drop in and have a bite at Rainworth I do so. Even if the line up of famished souls grows longer and the wait tick over slowly, you pay for what you get. An awesome feed every time. When you look into the display cabinet there’s nothing but freshness, no pre-crumbed or battered stuff here. A chicken burger is made from chicken breast and a burger is made from steak. Just writing about it now makes me want to hop in my car and go there. Where the food is excellent, the new owners and staff are equally matched. Service is quick and reliable and the owner still remembers me. She may not call me by my proper name but she knows my order and I don’t even have to tell her. If you’re looking to go to Rainworth, the busiest times are usually Thursday, Friday night and lunchtime on weekends. You may want to call in beforehand because you don’t want to be next in line if someone from the Brisbane Broncos is ordering.
