Known for their soups and salads I thought I’d give them a try today. Shop is clean, well presented and has a small but interesting range of salads on display. Staff are friendly enough. Opted for the soup — Pea & Ham. Tasty, but quite watery compared to thick filling soup Mum used to make. Just to rub salt though — no bread offered — and if you ask for a small roll, the likes of which Sumo Salad give away — it’ll cost you $ 1! Something not very clever about that?

Sometimes I feel like something healthy and light for lunch, and it’s times like this I’m glad to have Grass Roots around. They have lots of salads, wraps, soups and even pies. You don’t feel as bad eating a pie when you team it with a salad. All the food is nice and fresh, and you feel good eating it. What more could you want?

Grass Roots is pretty simple — fresh, healthy breakfasts and lunches for city workers. Simple branding, cheaper, healthier takeaway than most nearby places and better quality food than the chain university campus cafes. I wouldn’t describe Grass Roots as something to be excited about — but it certainly helps when you’re busy and need to eat something on the run that won’t clog your arteries. Grass Roots are a South Australian chain with only three stores, all in the city. Everything is pretty reasonably priced, and comes with helpful labels explaining what is gluten, meat or dairy free. The basis of their menus are soups, salads and savouries — all freshly made. While the salads, pasties and frittatas all suit me fine, my favourite bit is the soups. I love a good winter soup, or a takeaway cup of hot porridge in the morning. While most places are stingy with their soup servings, and only offer pretty standard boring flavours, Grass Roots does a little better.
