After making a reservation 3weeks ago for a special birthday dinner with other couples, we received a phone call 5days before the confirmed reservation night to tell us, they’re shutting down for renovations… WTF!!! So sad, cos now we’re stuck trying to find another location during the busiest time in Adelaide(Clipsal/Fringe/Womad etc) WILLNEVEREVERRECOMMENDTHISPLACE…

Went here on all hallows eve with the man. We discovered it flicking through the entertainment book(gold section). First impression were really good. A host greeted us in the front entrance almost immediately. He was genuinely friendly & found us a nice intimate table for two, despite us not having booked. Within a few seconds of being seated we were asked if we’d like still, table or sparkling water, which was then promptly bought to our table & served. Throughout the evening our water glasses were never empty, but the wait staff were not intrusive in doing so. Shortly after ordering alcoholic beverages our waiter informed me that my wine of choice wasn’t available, & would I like an alternative at the same price. So to cut a looonng review a smidge shorter… we ordered 1 entrée &2 mains between us — mini Chinese burgers — AMAZINGNESS, a beef dish(recommended by our waiter cos I couldn’t decide), and lightly battered soft shell crab. It was all beautifully presented & delivered by friendly staff in a timely manner. It didn’t look like heaps of food but we both went away incredibly satisfied. Cannot wait to come back and try more oh, and the reason I didn’t give it 5 stars? Well, I didn’t visit the ladies room(I always think that’s a good judge of excellence in any establishment), and the platter the mini burgers were served on had a couple of chips in it. There’s always room for improvement

A very good restaurant to dine at! I went there on a date in a Thursday night and it was quite popular with only 3 tables left free all night. The atmosphere is quite quaint, bird cages over the lights and soft mood lighting. The food was delicious. However entrée only came out with chopsticks so be warned! There were lots of finely chopped food on the plate so it made picking up with the chopsticks quite difficult for the inexperienced. Mains were amazing(and we got western cutlery too). The entire menu had a selection of wines that would best suit the main too, which would be good for the not so experienced wine drinker. Tip: when you first arrive the waiter will ask you if you’d like still or sparkling water, both are $ 8. You can ask for the non-offered tap water too, which they have chilling in the fridge. All in all, a great little restaurant with delicious fresh food and lovely waiters. They even stayed open slightly longer for us to enjoy our date.

Gushy review alert — contains occasional superlatives and frequent positive adjectives. In one sentence, From Orient is the best Chinese restaurant in Adelaide: it has the best food, the best ambience, and the best service. In more than one sentence: Walking into From Orient, I was immediately reminded on one of my other favourite Adelaide Chinese spots — Concubine. The black. The slightly colonial sense of refinement. Right down to the birdcage design on the menu. We were warmly greeted by management and a swathe of staff. Throughout the evening, waiters hovered at a polite distance, waiting for any hint that they could assist, but seldom approaching without such a hint — perfect. Each staff member was polite, warm and helpful; one girl had some trouble with English, particularly around the wine list, but it was no real obstacle. The food. From Orient offers a good range of plates designed for sharing. The menu doesn’t overreach, which is refreshing, as well as offering plenty of uncommon dishes to try — a good excuse to return. We had the Mapo Tofu, Beef with Tingling Sauce, and Seasonal Chinese Vegetables — the portions were ample, and this provided enough food for us to be beyond full, and take away enough for at least one further meal for one. The sealer? The moment our cheeks puffed out and we could clearly consume no more, a waiter appeared at the table, asking if we would like to take home the leftovers to enjoy later. Yes, please.

Close to work and something different made this an obvious place for a colleague’s farewell(that and he requested it). I was a bit put off by the menu online because I thought it might be too pricey for some staff members — but I didn’t know about the lunchtime specials menu. That menu included some more mainstream options averaging about $ 16 each — more like the work lunch I had in mind. Beautifully decorated and appointed, we were greeted at the door. Our booking for 8 and grown to 9 but it was easily accommodated. The restaurant was not packed and we had a number of staff waiting on us. The food was excellent. Very tasty and well-presented. Not the fastest service but I doubt that itstheir aim. The wait staff were both plentiful and ardent, but could do with some smoothing out of rough edges. We were a large party and there was much confusion over who ordered what. I seem to recall from my waitressing days that you assigned patrons numbers based on their position on the table and took their order based on that so you can put the right plate in front of the right person. That little trick was not in evidence on the day, but I think that the desire to please means that it will improve. I’ll give it another go soon, I think, and you should too!

This is Chinese cuisine at its absolute finest. The restaurant is absolutely covered in stunning decore. It is incredibly formal and they even match your main meal with a wine to accompany the brilliant taste. For the entrée, I enjoyed some tofu spring rolls, some dumplings, fungi and meatballs. All had a unique Asian culinary approach and were amazingly decorated. Mains were great and included duck, beef, slow braised steak and the Kung pao chicken which was absolutely tasty. All meals again were a pleasure to the taste buds and the eyes. In house wine was great and although it was a tad pricey. It was well well worth it with money for value. Staff were incredibly helpful, friendly and attended to your every need. They made the experience very enjoyable and one of the best waiter experiences I have ever had. A truly magnificent evening and definitely worth of five stars. Shall be returning to the restaurant when I can.

Seriously this was the best meal I have eaten in all of South Australia. The Kung Pao Chicken was awesome and the desserts were excellent. Only open 5 months but spectacular.
