This is a review that’s long overdue. My stylist is Jason and he has been the only one to ever been able to understand my fussy hair and actually give it a shape and style. Absolutely the best haircuts I’ve ever had! So from a guys stand point, definitely give Jason a call.
But this review just doesn’t stop there. I convinced my wife today to give him a try as well and her hair looks absolutely amazing!!! I love how her hair shimmers under the light, truly a master of his craft!
I highly recommend making an appointment with him in advance to avoid any wait times because he does get quite busy.

Jason is a great stylist with lots of passion for his work. I always get my cut from him. He just colored my younger brother. Great natural color!!!

Jason is my stylist for more than 5 years and he did a fantastic job

I got recommended to Kevin from a friend and now have been going here consistently for about 5 months now even since moving to LA. This is the first salon that I’ve been going to consistently. Normally, it was whichever place was closest to me. One thing that really stood out to me was his ability to make whatever style you had in mind work well for you. I’ve been to other salons where you would ask for something, but something would always look a bit off. With Kevin, any style that you wanted he could make look really clean and fresh. Another thing that stood out was his attention to detail. He makes sure every hair is trimmed to the perfect length and doesn’t rush the haircut. Overall, I’m really satisfied and will continue to come back to get my haircut.

Jason is my hair dresser for almost 3 years and I followed him every where he goes. He is awesome and he does magic with color and highlights. The result is natural and yet really classy and chic. And his price is really reasonable ! Not to mentioned he really nice and accommodating. Trusted his opinion to the point I never told him much every time I go there. He just look at my hair and decided what need to be done including the color and style ! And yet I got tons of compliments on my hair from strangers. He is truly a undiscovered gem. I travelled almost 35 miles each way every 3 months just to have my hair done by him and I think it’s worth it.
Recently I tried the new stylist, Alex and loves the way he blow dried my hair. My hair is so thick and wavy and he blow dried it so it looks natural and yet stylish! Awesome.

First time at this salon. I’m from San Diego. My hairstylist Kevin has moved up here and I haven’t been able to find a more fitting stylist that understands my hair more than him in San Diego. He has been cutting my hair since 2005. This salon is very welcoming and clean. As soon as I came, I was greeted and sat down at the booth. I came in today for a hairdye. Spend about 2 hours watching at how the shop works while I waited for my hair to finish. Had time to watch how everyone operated. Everyone kept their stations nice and tidy and was very professional. I told Kevin what kind of red I wanted and he understood and delivered exactly what I wanted. I am finally satisfied with my hair again. I will never let anyone else touch my hair again and will make that 2 hour trip to come up here and see him.
On a side note, Kevin is also an amazing make up artist and have always been my go to for special events. It’s a shame that he no longer is in San Diego. If you ever are in need of a pampering day, come see Kevin at Koogai Salon and he will definitely not disappoint you. He will take care of your needs.

I trust anything and everything Kevin wants to do to my hair. He could give me a mullet and make it look good 100% real talk. Getting my hair done is always fun and its nice to never have to worry about leaving the salon pissed off. Highly recommend.

Today I went to Kevin to get my hair dyed (which is my first time EVER to get it dyed) and cut as it was recommended to me by my cousin. I am VERY picky and conscious of making sure I get the right individual to cut and style my hair. Kevin, was by far one of the most personable, friendly, and outgoing hair stylists that I have ever gotten my haircut from. He explains in great detail about how dyeing hair works, which colors work, how to style your hair, and provides assurance that you are going to be taken care. For example, he had explained that highlights were recommended for the summertime as you’ll be in the sun more and that a darker yet greenish, auburn tone is more suited for the colder season. I am from San Diego, and the drive to get my hair done by Kevin is worth every minute stuck in traffic. His attention to detail throughout the whole time there was ON POINT! He made sure and took the time to make sure that my hair is as best as it can be, without trying to rush and attend to another customer. This was my first time getting my hair dyed and I had alot of worry about making sure that it would like good. Kevin did more than make my hair look good, he made it look outstanding.

Kevin’s the envy of the Viet entertainment biz. When asked by other MUA and hair stylists who dolled me up, they all roll their eyes at the mention of his name. Lol He’s the only professional I’ll book for shows, shoots, and events as he has plenty of experience under his designer belt!
My boyfriend is a dating/​relationship/​lifestyle coach and takes all his clients to see Kevin. He has a great eye for both trendy men and women’s hairstyles and will recommend what he feels fits you best.
The other Koogai guys are all friendly and neat and keep their store just the same.

Koogai sounds like «Cool Guy» but it’s also literal since they have a lot of «cool guys» working there. These guys treat hair and makeup like art. You can tell that they take a lot of pride in what they do. They don’t consider their work as a job but creating a masterpiece and their customers are a walking work of art. I have been their customer and I like coming here since these guys are so fun and talented. They treat their customers like family. Lay Minh and Kevin are so detailed and caring. They take the time to understand what you want and can transform a person completely. This salon provides hair and makeup services for all social events. You feel special when you are there.
Although the salon is small, it’s personable, modern, and very clean. Appointments are highly recommended since these guys are always booked up. Avoid busy times such as weekends (not because of the salon but limited parking in the plaza). Park in the back or on the side since it’s closer to the salon.

Went back a 2^nd time for Victor to retouch my color. The results were just as fantastic as last time. I can’t give this place 5 stars because during my 2^nd visit, Victor had an assistant wash my hair and OMG this assistant washed my hair like he was rubbing a stain off a car. I had to tell him a few times that he was too rough and after awhile I just gave up and suffered through the pain. I think I lost like ¹⁄₁₆ of my hair from the hair washing!

Kevin Trung dung Nguyen is the best thing that has happened to my hair! I take my hair seriously. Hair frames your face — so if it looks bad, it’s just all bad.
Kevin has styled my hair since 2007 and I haven’t let anyone touch my hair since. I have moved to SF but whenever I come back to my hometown, San Diego, I drive 1.5 hrs to have him work his magic on my hair!
Highlights!:
1. I never have to tell him what color or what style I want. I sit down, I tell him what I don’t like about my hair at the time, and then he just starts! He stays up to date on trends and seasonal colors — and he picks out the best hair color and style for me accordingly!
2. if you do come in with a specific look you want to go for, he can mimic it exactly; however, he can also give you the best (and very necessary) suggestions to make sure the look matches your face shape, your hair texture, etc.
Overall, Koogai Salon is a beautiful salon filled with talented people.
If you take hair as seriously as I do, you definitely want to try Koogai Salon! And if you can, book your appointment with Kevin — aka my hair god!

This review is for Lay.
I’ve been coming to Lay for 11 years now and he’s been nothing but one word– FABULOUS.
Why do I keep coming back and why do I only trust him with my hair? Simply because he is the best and it doesn’t get better or healthier than him. Sure someone can get you as blonde as you want or butter you up and tell you you’re beautiful, but is your hair really going to be healthy and beautiful down the road? With Lay it will.
Lay has been there for me through the good times and bad times. The good times were when my hair was so healthy and thick that it was down to my belly button– and yes, it was that long and healthy even though it was BLONDE. There’s been two bad times– the first was when I was young and naïve– I shampooed my with Herbal Essence which would strip away my color and turn it brassy, but Lay would work his magic and reverse the effects. The second time was when I got into a horrible accident and became very insecure. I dyed my hair dark to look more professional and began flat ironing my hair everyday, trying to «heat away» my insecurities. Consequently, I fried my hair and had to cut over 13 inches. Lay gave me a very high fashion bob and a few months later gave me a sexy long bob with ombré. It became my favorite hair style from Lay.
Har Colors:
I’ve been blonde, ash blonde, and dirty blonde to ash brown and almost black hair. The majority of my time with Lay has been blonde because he is a color magician. It takes a lot of skill to turn dark hair into a bright blonde. When I feel like being dark, Lay gives me the exact darkness I want and need. Both colors bring out my amber eyes. The blonde is eye catching and awakens the wild side in me which is perfect for when I party in Miami and Vegas. The dark hair makes me look more professional and naturally beautiful which I needed when I backpacked in Southeast Asia, applied to graduate school, and represented my clients in court.
Ombré:
Lay’s ombres are so beautiful because the transitions are so smooth and classy looking. Like I said earlier, my favorite hair style from Lay was I had a long bob with ombré. I currently have a mid-​length cut with ombré because I need to grow my hair longer for weddings that I am in. I have posted pictures of my latest ombré so you can see how beautiful it is.
Haircuts:
Lay will give me any kind of haircut I want even if he doesn’t think it’s the best idea. I have a widow’s peak that prefers to part to the right. However, I use to have this huge mole over my left eyebrow and would request side bangs or straight bangs to cover the mole. Lay warned that my widow’s peak would make it difficult to have left sided side bangs/​straight bangs and asked why I wanted to cover my mole. When I told him that I thought it was ugly, he assured me that I am beautiful the way I am and did not need to hide anything about myself. I still requested to hide my mole (haha) and Lay did as I wanted.
Hair Products:
I love getting my hair done because Lay uses the most amazing products. His shampoos and conditioners smells so good. When my hair was very damaged due to heat, his assistant would apply a leave in conditioner for that would turn my hair into silk. Lay is definitely using high quality products to maintain my hair’s health.
Salon:
The best thing about going to the salon is seeing Lay being himself. Lay is a very nice, respectful, and talented hair stylist, but above all else he is a D-​I-​V-​A, baby! But that is what I love the most about him. The second best part of being at the salon is being able to watch Sex and the City reruns on their big screens while being surrounded by beautiful, white orchids.
Make sure you make an appointment well in advance with Lay. I drive all the way from Long Beach to see Lay and while I was in college, I drove all the way down from Santa Barbara. I also tip his assistant because she gives such great head massages!
