SHIR provides movement and music oriented educational experiences which seek to highlight and build cooperation among communities through various types of tours, presentations, meetings, tutoring, and other community services.

History

Established in 2011.

SHIR (Singing History-​tours Inspire Respectful-​cooperation) began as Solutions for Healthy and Independently Reasoned Answers, a multi-​function company offering tutoring, research, and talks. In 2011, a focus on delivering Singing Walking tours of key Early Integration neighborhoods of Washington, DC, developed with the objective of inspiring more community cooperation, by presenting examples of past cooperation in an innovative way. SHIR continues to offer tutoring and research as well as talks, but the current primary focus is on offering tours that help connect the various communities of the greater Washington, DC area in ways that each person can find meaningful and relevant to our lives today.

Former professor and reenactor Shira Destinie Jones, a native of DC, draws upon her research and family backgrounds to recreate for you the rich interconnections between communities of Washington, DC, weaving song and narrative into a vibrant band of cultural and historical context to show how cooperation, then and now, builds a better Capital City.
