Description

Specialties

Pumpernickel’s bagels are some of the best in DC. We have our own bakery and make and bake the baglels on premises. Our pizza dough is also made on premises.

We have a VEGAN menu so everyone can eat together.

We have an extensive catering menu and are very accommodating. Give us a try.

History

Established in 1989.

Jim and Debbie Doherty started this business to fill a need in Chevy Chase. After 10 years they handed the reigns over to Jim’s cousin Brigid and she and her husband Rob have been running things since 1999.

Meet the Business Owner

Brigid D.

Business Owner

I relocated from NYC in 1998 leaving behind my soon to be husband Rob to begin learning the deli business. Realizing this was where I wanted to be, I dug my heels in and did my best. Rob came down in 1999 with the intentions of getting a job. I realized that this was not going to work. I needed him to be successful at Pumpernickel’s. So what does any woman do who wants her way? I begged, cried, reasoned and what does any man do for the woman he loves, caves. So after getting married in 1999 we have worked side by side since. Some days are better than others but we are very proud of ourselves. Owning a business is a lot of hard work, though quite enjoyable. Long hours, strenuous work are the highlights. You don’t realize how exhausting it is to deal with the problems that arise with employees, equipment, deliveries and keep that smile on your face. Rob and I may seem rough around the edges or as some reviewers might say, «rude», really we’re quite nice people, get to know us
