History

Established in 2010.

Established in 2010 Metro Mutts was formed in 2009 after 2 families of dog owners came together with a passion… for their communities and for their dogs. Adamant about supporting local business and often wishing for additional services and stores in closer proximity to their own homes, friends and future co-​owners, Lee, Kelly, and Anna, were growing weary of numerous treks across town to find affordable and healthy dog supplies for their growing puppies. Then they had an «aha moment»! Not only would they help bring businesses to their neighborhood, they would start their own business. Being experienced and avid pet lovers, they decided that a neighborhood pet store was a necessity. Metro Mutts was born and became an overnight sensation, winning Capitol Hill Retailer of the Year within a few months of opening. Now it 2 easy-​to-​access locations, Metro Mutts is proud to be growing in response to all the neighborhood love!

Lee, Anna, Kelly H.

Business Owner

Husband and wife team Lee and Kelly were ecstatic to move from Virginia to Capitol Hill with their two dogs Sunny and Hannah. After finding the perfect home on Capitol Hill, they were surprised and delighted to discover that long-​time friends were practically next door neighbors.

Anna, along with her husband, three kids and dog Batman, were acclimated to Capitol Hill life and were able to show their new neighbors the ropes.

Being experienced and avid pet lovers, they decided that a neighborhood pet store was a necessity. Armed with tons of research, expert advice and most importantly the growing support of neighbors, Anna, Kelly and Lee opened the flagship Metro Mutts store on H Street NE in early 2010.

In October of 2011, Metro Mutts opened its second location on Barracks Row, SE near Eastern Market on Capitol Hill, with the friendly acquisition of Pawticulars.

They have the friendliest staff that you’ll ever meet! Everybody knows my dog by name. There is always water available for thirsty pups who visit. They sell unique products with healthy pets in mind. I find that most of the staff members own pets, and give helpful advice, based on their experiences.

While you may be able to find items a bit cheaper, the hands-​on experience and spot-​on advice of the staff is more than worth the visit!
Metro Mutts offers an amazing selection and really takes ownership of providing pet owners with the products that meets their, and their pets’ needs. We walked in with our pup and he was able to sample toys as we wandered through the store. Jimmy and Lilly, the two staff members, imparted knowledge that was more than worth the visit. Jimmy recommended some excellent toys and treats for our pup and even provided some training tips. We more than got what we paid for and will certainly be back.
As an added bonus, for those looking to make a day of it, be sure to stop by the various nearby pet-​friendly restaurants for brunch/​lunch/​dinner.

Metro Mutts is a great shop for all of your canine (or feline) needs. It’s small, but has a little of everything, including a friendly, knowledgeable staff. I even learned a few things, and I’ve been in the pet industry for almost 10 years.
I visit for toys and treats, mostly. Their bakery case items use fresh, natural ingredients and are very pretty. Toy selection for both dogs and cats is good, and there’s usually a sale bin. Plus, they have have treats and water for your dog, because they are more than welcome to join you.

Horrible experience overall for pet sitting! I received no confirmation that a pet sitter was coming to my house, I had to call to confirm a couple days before my trip. Then, the day I left, the manager emailed me to say that I never set up a time for the pet sitter to come to my house for instructions (I was never told this was required, also when I called to confirm, they never told me this!). I emailed her back immediately but then never heard back. When I got back into town, I went to pick up my keys, and they were no where to be found. Turns out, the pet sitter still had them. I don’t know why he had them since he hadn’t been to my house to feed my cats for 1+ days, which made me nervous he held on to my house keys for that long. When I got into my house, I found that one cat had been locked in the basement and one cat locked upstairs. The cat box and food are in the basement, which meant that one cat did not have access to food or cat box for almost 2 days and had peed all over my floors and destroyed my furniture! I also had no idea where my other cat was. Needles to say I was distraught and so upset, and my cats were too. I called and spoke with the manager who said she would take care of it, issue me a credit, and pay for my chair that was ruined. Let’s just say its been 2+ weeks and I Have not heard back from her.

This review is for their pet walking/​sitting services. I moved to the H Street area about a year ago, and immediately began looking for someone that would be able to take care of my dog while I travel on business. I found Metro Mutts, had an intro visit with Jackie, and subsequently have had great dog-​care through Sarah, Kate, Chloe, Jennifer, and a few others. I travel out of town several days a month, and it’s always a relief knowing that my pup will be watched over, walked, and have a good time while I’m gone. The notes they leave about each day’s activities are a definite plus, as is the level of communication from the office when scheduling. Check them out!

This place is worth the trek! Chock-​full of pet goodies. They ensure that most (if not all) of the food items do not have corn or wheat. I also noticed that most of the food was not Chinese (the only ones I found were prepackaged with toys). Tons of toys and accessories. They also have a case of freshly made dog treats. Some of the stuff got pricey (designer or handmade accessories), but otherwise the prices were reasonable. I wish I didn’t have to haul everything back to Texas, otherwise I would have bought the frail fish skins and the huge duck chews. Also, if they had crystal collars that were small/​extra small, I totally would have bought one.
Bought my dogs a couple potato-​based chews shaped like an alligator (made in Holland), some ribs, a stimulating dog treat dispensing toy and treats that would fit= just under $ 30.

This is a great pet store for several reasons. I like to support small businesses for one, and this one is very friendly. They sometimes sell pets that need a home out of their store as well. I also like their assortment of natural or more gourmet foods and treats. For instance they have an assortment of duck meat treats my dog loves.
When my dog was having a paw licking problem the girl there was really helpful and suggested a bitter apple spray. It worked! That is the sort of thing Petco cannot offer.

Just came home after a 6 day trip where I had Metro Mutts come in to check on my cats 4 of those days. Both of my cats were so happy and definitely looked like they were well taken care of. The process was so easy too! I signed up online, filled out the info about my cats and the days I needed a sitter. There’s also the option for AM or PM visits. Payment was handled online which made it really convenient.
The next day Jackie called and also emailed confirmation of the dates. We set up an at-​home visit just so she could meet the cats and ask any questions not covered with their questionnaire. She was also able to pick up our extra key so that saved me a trip to the store.
When we got back from our vacation there were little checklist daily journals our sitter (Diane) filled out. Details about their mood, behavior, and confirmation that they were fed and played with. I’m 100% satisfied and would definitely recommend Metro Mutts to anyone looking to ease their mind while they are away.
Bonus: Not only did Diane pick up our mail, she also vacuumed my living room and tidied up the kitchen! Definitely appreciative of the extra effort and attention my apartment and kitties received!

Stopped in upon seeing the most cutest smallest dog ever. I guess they were having a doggy playdate with a bunch of dogs because there were people signing in with their pets. Because of this though it took a while before someone rang us out.
I wanted to get my dog something for when I returned home and saw a cute alligator dental chew for $ 1.79. Me being cheap and finding it cute, that’s what I picked.
Prices were a little high however on other things.

I love this place! I’m not sure if it’s because of the random animals that roam the inside, or the wide selection of treats and toys for your furry friend. I always stop by for shrimps for my roommates cat. He loves them!
I’ve seen an adorable basset hound here, and a cat that they apparently let test all of the cat nip samples. Very relaxed… lol.
I always stop by when I’m in the neighborhood. Support small business!

Stopped in to see if I could pick up a little something for Penny while on vacation. The ladies at the counter were extremely friendly and super helpful with making recommendations for the pup. Prices seemed to be in line for what I pay in SD. As I left the store I realized they had stayed open for me to shop, thanks for the great service!

I’m not the parent of a metro mutt, just the companion of a well adjusted city cat. But I’m definitely a fan of Metro Mutts.
While waiting for my lunch companion to arrive, I wandered in here to check the place out. Nick is just about the most spoiled furball on the planet but really — can a cat have too many toys?
This shop is packed full of ooooodles of goodies for pups, but they do have a small section in the back for kitties — which one of the resident cats was all to happy to accompany me to. I don’t know if cats work on commission but this one certainly got its share of rubs in and head/​back scratches. I picked out a couple of items for my little guys and then headed back out for lunch.
The staff is super friendly and the place had everything you could imagine for a dog from a winter vest to doggy cannoli shells. As for my 2 catnip treats, they must have been pretty darn good too as I was practically mauled when I walked in my home.

They were very kind to my pup when I brought her in with me, and the store was very clean and well put together.

I love Metro Mutts! So glad they opened a second location. I’ve always found the staff to be so helpful at the H St location, and the same goes for their new store. They always have good suggestions for my pup and I really like the products they choose to carry. It’s nice to get responsibly sourced products that aren’t just chocked full of questionable ingredients. So nice to have an alternative to the big-​box chain pet stores and the other less than friendly boutique pet stores in DC.

I stopped in on a whim while trying (and failing) to find 395 and was so impressed by this store I had to say something! I had been to the H St. location a few times so I knew I could get some of my dog’s favorite food (Verus). The owners remembered me and asked about my pup and even recalled what I purchased last time. It’s little things like this that make going to Metro Mutts worth the trip. Besides the selection and knowledgable staff, you really feel welcomed and part of the community as a customer. I will definitely be returning for more toys and food next time I go to Eastern Market.

Metro mutts is great! They have a comprehensive selection of toys, treats, and good natural food, and the owners are always helpful and knowledgeable. This store is a little smaller than their h street store, but is very well stocked and in a great location. I go to eastern market on a regular basis and they are right on the main drag. The last time I was there, I mentioned that our dog had been having problems with itching, and they were was had a great product that has really helped our pup.

Great addition to Barracks Row! Staff is very nice and helpful. They have some cool dog toys/​accessories that you wouldn’t be able to find at a Petsmart. Wish they had more variety of dog food. And prices are pretty high, but understandable I suppose.
