History

Established in 2010.

Metro Mutts was formed in 2009 after 2 families of dog owners came together with a passion… for their communities and for their dogs. Adamant about supporting local business and often wishing for additional services and stores in closer proximity to their own homes, friends and future co-​owners, Lee, Kelly, and Anna, were growing weary of numerous treks across town to find affordable and healthy dog supplies for their growing puppies. Then they had an «aha moment»! Not only would they help bring businesses to their neighborhood, they would start their own business. Being experienced and avid pet lovers, they decided that a neighborhood pet store was a necessity. Metro Mutts was born and became an overnight sensation, winning Capitol Hill Retailer of the Year within a few months of opening. Now it 2 easy-​to-​access locations, Metro Mutts is proud to be growing in response to all the neighborhood love!

Business Owner

Husband and wife team Lee and Kelly were ecstatic to move from Virginia to Capitol Hill with their two dogs Sunny and Hannah. After finding the perfect home on Capitol Hill, they were surprised and delighted to discover that long-​time friends were practically next door neighbors.

Anna, along with her husband, three kids and dog Batman, were acclimated to Capitol Hill life and were able to show their new neighbors the ropes.

Being experienced and avid pet lovers, they decided that a neighborhood pet store was a necessity. Armed with tons of research, expert advice and most importantly the growing support of neighbors, Anna, Kelly and Lee opened the flagship Metro Mutts store on H Street NE in early 2010.

In October of 2011, Metro Mutts opened its second location on Barracks Row, SE near Eastern Market on Capitol Hill, with the friendly acquisition of Pawticulars.

Lee, Kelly, Anna and all their Mutts invite you to stop in and get acquainted! Mutts welcome all the time.

We love the Metro Mutts store, and especially love the dog walking service — both get 5 starts from us!
First, the store — the employees are exceptional, friendly, knowledgeable and clearly love dogs. We love bringing our dogs into the store and find it so convenient that dogs are welcome inside :) The store is full of high quality, ethically manufactured pet items and healthy food. Just as a warning, if you are looking for a low-​cost pet store, Metro Mutts might not be for you, but if you are looking for high quality and healthy items to spoil your pet, you are definitely in the right place! Bonus points for its super convenient (for us) H street location.
Second, the dog walking — we have been using Metro Mutts for our dog walking for over 1.5 years and LOVE it! We can do the scheduling online, conveniently cancel walks or request additional walks, and most importantly to me, if our walker talks a vacation or needs to cancel, Metro Mutts will make sure our dogs are taken care of and I don’t have to worry about rearranging my work schedule. Every day we get a note emailed from them regarding what time our walker came, details of the walk, and special little notes. I love getting these updates at work and knowing my fur babies are in good hands :) Our two dogs LOVE our walker Challys. She is seriously a dog whisperer, kind, patient and loving to our animals — I cannot recommend her and Metro Mutts enough!

I’ve been shopping at Metro Mutts since they first opened more than 5 years ago, back when the 2nd st to 10th st strip on h street was a dead zone with very little in the way of interesting stores. I live a few blocks away and have two 10+ year old cats that absolutely love Verus cat food, which is a Maryland based pet food company that Metro Mutts recommended when I first entered their store and was looking for an upgrade from Meow Mix. I had visited other pet specialty stores («boutiques») in DC and was disappointed a the ridiculous prices and random snooty attitude (it’s a pet store, people, not a spa/​cocktail lounge).From day one, Metro Mutts has successfully walked the line between providing quality products and decent prices, and have continued to do so even as they have expanded their product lines, services, and physical spaces. I’ve also had nothing but good experiences with the owners and staff, who are all helpful and genuinely seem to care about cats and dogs. It was a sad day when I learned that the resident store cat was breaking into dog food bags at night and had to be sent to fat kitty camp and would not be returning, but there are always interesting neighborhood pups roaming the store when I drop by. Easily one of my favorite places in DC.

Excellent store with knowledgeable and helpful staff, great selection of products, and a variety of activities and samples for your pets. We came in and learned that they offer a free puppy play time, and free samples of frisbees, snacks, and training pads. They also offered a broad range of toys and treats that kept our teething puppy happy and their staff provided us with some fantastic recommendations.
The biggest drawback to Metro Mutts is hat it is not the most accessible place and that as a boutique, it is priced well above other stores or Amazon. All the same, it’s worth a visit.

This rating is for the fact that they are not wheelchair accessible (step up to get into the store) when they easily could be; therefore, I can not patronize them. It looks like a good store from the outside, but since a wheelchair user cannot independently get in, I will not spend my money there, and I’d like to because they are conveniently located and a local business.

I went to the H street store. They are very awesome at this place. I went in to see if they happened to carry my dog’s food because I saw on their site that they carry not-​as-​common brands. They do not carry the brand but she looked up all of her distributors to see if she could order it for me. She could not order it for me but she did tell me who sells it in the area AND helped me find one that is comparable in the brands they carry. I am going to read up on Fromm’s and if I like what I read, I will probably switch.
They didn’t have to do all that for me and I greatly appreciate it.

Love this place!
I’m new in town and when I got a dog, she came with some fancy bags of food. Not wanting to switch her diet, I searched around for a pet store that carried it.
Luckily Metro Mutts was just two blocks away! I went in with my Great Dane and they immediately helped me find the brand I was looking for. And since they didn’t have the puppy formula, the awesome guy that helped me gave me free sample bags of the puppy formula!
So awesome and always friendly! Great store!

I love Metro Mutts! I live equidistant between the Capitol Hill and H Street locations, and have gotten great service at both, but the H Street location has easier-​to-​find parking and a larger selection. Staff have always been incredibly friendly to me and my pups (when they accompany me). We always feel welcome, and the store’s stock never disappoints.
I’m also a frequent user of Metro Mutts’ dog walking service, which has to be the best in the city. They are incredibly responsive, leave detailed notes and text me with updates if something goes awry (I have one dog who can be a bit shy with new people). I always feel comfortable knowing my pets are in their care. All in all this is a uniquely great business in the DC area, particularly if you live in Cap Hill or northeast, and I highly recommend the store, the staff and the dog walkers.

I can’t rave enough about their dog walking services. They have an easy online booking system, and I KNOW that my baby girl is getting the best service possible. I come home to a happy pup, and very detailed helpful notes explaining the potty breaks, training and behaviour of my pup. They have helped me out of a last minute bind on many occasions. They are the BEST!

I stopped by this store a few years back, and let me tell you — it has ALWAYS left a positive impression. I was SO EXCITED when I found out there was one RIGHT next to my new place on H Street! At first chance, I took my sweet dog Nya over to make sure they had our her food (they totally did — GREAT selection!). She’s NOT a city dog… and was so scared by the time we got there she was shaking uncontrollably.
The SWEETEST girls were working and came out from behind the counter to introduce themselves. They gave her lots of hugs and calm attention — such a WARM welcome to our new home! By the time we left, she was feeling a LOT better — thanks to the fantastic staff that evening.
Now, Nya gets SO excited to get in that door! They remember her, and you can really tell they care a great deal. Tonight, she became a TRUE city dog with the purchase of her new poncho… LOL — it even has rubber duckies. OMG! To die for.
See! The smiling girl behind the counter just wanted to make sure she didn’t get wet on the way home! Seriously, this store is the BEST. They have all the natural products I’m looking for, lots of new interesting toys, but people who CARE keep me coming back. Lots of love to the H Street location — you’ve got our business for life. :)

I’ve been only once there an it is enough. On the positive side: it carries a high quality, difficult to find, cat food brand that I like. In fact, that was the whole reason I when there in the first place. I live in Germantown, MD but work in DC. For reasons I am not going into, I run out of the cat food I feed one of my cats and couldn’t buy it where I shop normally, Whole Pet Central, in Rockville. I called two other pet stores in DC before I found what I was looking for in Metro Mutts. The person who answered the phone kindly offered to separate the 12 cans of cat food and keep them behind the counter until I could pick them up that day.
I arrived to the store after work around 7:00pm, looked around the store and it is tiny. The aisles are pretty narrow. Not a place to hang out but just buy what you need and head out. I saw some overpriced toys (and yes, I bough two) but that is expected given the location and the size of the store, and other good quality, grain free pet food.
The reason I’ll never set foot on that store again is another story. After I left the store with my purchase and arrived at the bus stop, it occurred to me that not once I even glanced at the content of the bag the boy attending the store handed me over with the cans of cat food to count them. Pretty stupid of me, but I was trying to get home to a decent hour (which didn’t happen). One can was missing. At $ 2.94 per can I decided to go back to the store and get the one was missing. I did and I actually found the manager who was the person I spoke earlier on the phone. He couldn’t believe it. He said that he counted the cans personally. In the meantime the employee brought the missing can immediately. The manager gave me a look like I was trying to steal one can from him but he still handed it over.
I do believe the manager was right and he put all the cans in the bag. What I think happened was that the employee took one can from the bag to scanned and entered the quantity by hand and even by mistake .or not, took the can and placed it some place other than the bag. I wasn’t paying much attention to what he was doing since I was looking around. The boy probably didn’t want to fess up to the manager and that is why he promptly retrieved the missing can.
Going to that store was stressful enough. I haven’t rode a bus in years, the neighborhood is a mismatch of weir people walking down the street. The whole time I was clutching my purse to my chest to be honest. I am not looking forward to go the neighborhood or that store.

Awesome neighborhood store! Went in for dog food, came out with some epic knowledge and a whole new perspective on animal husbandry. Super friendly and helpful staff that went above and beyond in helping us out — pumped to have this place so close! The affinity I have for this Capital Hill/​H Street pet paradise is eclipsed only by my love for my soft, furry critters. Keep up the good work, Metro Mutts! (Mowgli and Max say thanks, too)

I have been so happy with the Metro Mutts service! First of all, Darnita is very response on email and has been able to schedule extra evening and morning visits on short (1 – 2 day) notice. My dogwalker leaves long detailed notes, which are so much fun to read when I get home. She also seems to care just as much about giving my Golden Retriever some «TLC» as she calls it as she does walking him. Their standard practice is also to refresh your dog’s water, which is nice.
The only thing I wish Metro Mutts had is grooming service!
Overall, very pleased with the service, attention to detail, and level of responsiveness.

Hipster Pet Heaven! This place has some great stuff and a good verity of pet food. My cat is on a total grain-​free/​soy free diet so it’s hard to find cat food, but Metro Mutts has a few option. No to mention that they allow pets in the store, so it’s adorable entertainment.

We use Metro Mutts for their dog walking services and couldn’t be happier. Our two dogs get a half hour walk each weekday afternoon. The staff always arrive during the right time frame and spends the whole half hour with our dogs. I know this because our security system charts when people come and go, but also because our neighbors have commented on how diligent and friendly the walkers are.
Jackie and her staff are very accessible by phone or email. They always respond quickly to my emails and will give you advance notice when there’s going to be a substitute walker or change in the walking schedule. I also appreciate that Jackie has a background in dog training and has taken the time to talk with us about our specific training practices.
One of our favorite aspects of the service are the ‘Mutt Diary’ notes that the walker leaves each day. These notes let you know how the walk went which can be really helpful if you’re training your dogs, monitoring their health, etc. Depending on the walker, they can be really hilarious too.

I LOVE this cute pet shop so much. Sometimes when I’m walking past I will go inside just to browse around and look at the awesome stuff they have or buy another cute accessory for my cats. The resident cat, Romeo makes the visit much more enjoyable. He is friendly and affectionate and loves being petted. Customer service is TOP NOTCH! The staff is friendly and they truly care about customer satisfaction. Number one pet store in the DC area!

I was supposed to replenish my dog’s dry food supply all weekend, but somehow forgotten to do so until 3:00pm on a Sunday. While I used to shop at Super Petz in Annandale for their competitively priced dog food and their good selection of grain frees, I was feeling too lazy to drive 30 miles round trip from a bag of dog food.
2 minutes on Unilocal brought me to Metro Mutts, a place that I could have walked to, but chose not to as I was planning on buying a 30lb bag of food.
The store was not very large, but definitely had some unique knick knacks and there was a strong theme of healthy, organic foods and treats. I bought a 30lb bag of Taste of the Wild for ~~45 + tax, which I felt was very competitively priced! The staff was also very friendly.
I will definitely make a return visit here, and recommend it if you are looking for health conscious items for your dog.
