Did you see that picture of Hugh Jackman on his nose, with basal cell carcinoma — one of the most common types of skin cancer? And I’m sure you remember his sideburns as Wolverine. Well, that’s me too! — I’m recently sporting such mutton chops, and had surgery for basal cell carcinoma on my temple. We also both grew up in the southern hemisphere where the ozone layer is not fantastic.
Kids! Put sunscreen on outside. Anyway, this was my second time, it’s a very unpleasant experience. Fortunately (or not) I knew exactly what to expect. There was some waiting, since they do a bunch of patients at once. Dr Bortz’s patching are something of a work of art (with some math for the grafting), and he had an excellent manner.
So, I really don’t hope you have to visit here. But if you do, you’ll be in good hands.

If you need MOH surgery, Dr. Bortz is the best in the Bay Area. It’s scary enough to have to have a skin cancer removed, but if it’s on your face, Dr. Bortz is the one to see. He personally met with me when I was referred to his office by my dermatologist (who had already determined through a biopsy that my tiny growth was cancer). He was straightforward in what needed to be done, answered all questions at length and wasn’t in a rush (and his staff was uniformly fantastic as well). His demeanor is calm, friendly and very reassuring. Once I got there for the procedure I was pleasantly surprised that my appointment time was actually adhered to (didn’t have to wait around for another hour). This office is extremely well run and reassuring. As to the actual MOH procedure, it was painless (the only discomfort is the initial shot to numb you and it’s very quick). Dr. Bortz is a master of skin grafts (if you need it). So, 2−½ months later after my procedure, you can’t even tell that I’ve had it done. If I could figure out how to post pictures I would. My dermatologist, GP and anyone else I have ever mentioned my surgery to says he is the best. As an aside, my own sister had MOH surgery with Dr. Bortz 5 years ago. Never even knew she had it until I was getting my own. There is absolutely no way you can tell she had MOH surgery, and hers was much more invasive than mine. Have nothing but the best to say for Dr. Bortz and his office staff.

I am a physician who’s worked for decades at a famous teaching hospital in the Bay Area, and my visit for care here was unequivocally one of the most pleasant, efficient, knowledgeable, and patient-​centered I have ever experienced. I was seen right on time (how often does that happen?), everyone was professional, very thorough, and well informed, the office organization was great, and all the providers (who included the assistant, the PA, and Dr. Bortz) were happy to answer questions and educate fully, even though my medical issues were minor. I can think of nothing to suggest for improvement.

This is a fantastic office with a great doctor and an even better staff. I saw the physicians assistant Jake who was professional and friendly. They have an office policy that if it’s your first time in Dr. Bortz comes in and introduces himself even though Jake was totally able to handle my issues. This is a step above most offices where the nurse practitioner or the physicians assistant is the only one you ever meet. They are totally thorough and cautious and documented everything for their records.

One of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a Dr. After my regular grumpy dermatologist referred me to him after finding a basil cell on my nose he said he was the best Dr. to handle this. His bedside manner and explanation of my condition was so honest and compassionate. The damage was quite extensive and he was so comforting. I’m an Esthetician and I recommend him to all my clients. Such a sweet gentle giant! Thanks Dr. Bortz. You made what was a terrifying experience much more tolerable and between your work and Dr. Most of Stanford my Moe’s surgery was a success with minimal scarring!

Great experience. I had a little mole/​growth on my face and made an appt to have it looked at. The doctor took a look at it and cut it off for me right then and there, what a surprise. Now its a week later and I look as good as new.

I just had an extensive skin cancer removed by Dr. Bortz. He did a truly exceptional job. I could not have asked for a more talented or cordial physician nor efficient and supportive medical office. I looked to Unilocal to find a local dermatologist after moving to CA from TX. I had never been to a dermatologist before and was long overdue after decades of baking in the Texas sun. First, I want to thank everyone who posted about their experiences with Dr. Bortz. THANK YOU for leading me to the BEST doctor and the most professional, efficient and friendly medical office I have ever encountered. They set a whole new standard for personalized and professional care. I can’t remember the last time I visited a doctor’s office where I didn’t have to wait for an extended time… beyond my scheduled appointment. Dr. Bortz and his staff diligently honor appointment times and run an efficient – and friendly – practice. I’m honestly not sure how they do it. You would think efficiency translates into fast, get-​in-​get-​out 1:1 sessions with the doctor. It is anything but that. Dr. Bortz settles into the exam room with a big smile, a knowledge of your charts/​history, and amicably sets about getting to know about you/​your concerns/​your present symptoms. I honestly felt like I was the most important part of his day. I can’t say enough about the level of service and care that this team provides. Do yourself a favor and make an appointment… you’ll look at every other doctor you see differently and wonder, «why can’t they all be like Dr. Bortz and his team???»

Had my MOHs surgery today. This office runs like a clock– Rolex. Very well managed, organized, efficient and upfront. They are tuned in to every detail of procedures and are always one step ahead. Bottom line, exceptional communication and team work combined with an excellent physician equal good outcomes and happy patients.

I have been a patient of Dr Bortz for over 15 years, needing some basic derm care, and also 4 skin cancers. I am a MD too, I admire him. His office is great! He is very knowledgable and does great surgery. After several surgeries, I have very minimal scarring on my face, complimented by even plastic surgeons.
His office staff is very good too. It’s a large office, and occasionally it can be impersonal, but not bad. My only issue is that he withdrew from blue cross, which is my insurance – but I totally understand why he had to not participate with blue cross, due to their poor reimbursement ! I didn’t change doctors. Highly recommend Dr Bortz.

Was referred to Dr. Bortz by my dermatologist for skin cancer surgery. From the first phone call they have been pleasant and professional. They fit me in fairly quickly and made me feel comfortable with the procedure. The support staff/​nurses/​Dr. Bortz all were terrific. They even played my favorite Pandora station during the surgery! This is a great doctor with a great staff. I feel blessed to have found them. I strongly recommend them without reservation.

I came to Dr. Bortz after another skin doctor butchered my melanoma surgery. Not only Dr. Bortz fixed errors of a previous doctor, but did it beautifully. He also had his assistant, Alexis, who was very knowledgeable and is really nice. Dr. Bortz has a big heart, and he is an artist in doing surgeries as well as a scientist! Alexis is a wonderful, wonderful human being. I am blessed to have them in my life. I do not know if they ever read these reviews, but I always, always want to say thank you to Dr. Bortz and his whole team.

This time last year I was filled with the fear and uncertainty that accompanies a melanoma diagnosis. My dermatologist referred me to Dr. Bortz for a surgery consult and I called and made an appointment. From the first day I met Dr. Bortz and Alexis and the entire staff, I knew I was in good hands.
On that first day I had no idea of the journey I was embarking on – the extent of my excision and subsequent repair. However, Dr. Bortz did and he and his staff helped me carefully navigate my procedures and recovery with grace and enthusiasm. No one else could have accomplished a better repair!
In 24 office visits in ten months, I never had a negative experience or felt hurried or left with questions unanswered. I was treated with respect and professionalism every visit. And today, nearly one year later, I have a new face and big smile to prove it.

I haven’t always had beautiful skin… that is until I started seeing PA Patricia Loo. I have been seeing Patricia for my skin regimen for almost the past 10 years. Once I started on my personalized skin care program my skin felt and looked a million times better. People never believed I had skin problems… they always say you have amazing skin! And that I say, its because I do x, y, z prescribed by my PA
Because I don’t have any serious derm problems like skin cancer I don’t feel it always necessary to see the Dr. I mostly see Patricia who has performed surgery on me and prescribes my medication. However, when I do (about annually), Dr. Bortz is great! His entire staff are extremely professional, friendly and know their stuff.
The office specifies in non cosmetic dermatology, which I like. I feel like the focus on the more serious stuff allows the office to provide a higher level of service to their patients.
When it comes to your skin, you should feel comfortable and confident in your Dr and staff. I definitely do and would highly recommend Dr. Bortz and staff.
