Loved this place, bummed it’s gone. The owners have another place in Oakland. Anybody know the name of it?

Food: was off the hook! Fresh spring rolls — kill me for those!!! Super fresh, with crunch and a slight robberness of the rice paper… and a peanut sauce… gosh !!! want one right now :) we got something else (dont remember what, now) I remember that it was presented nicely, fresh, hot (temperature wise) and tasted very good
Drinks: lights of Saigon — was a good drink. full bar, good prices.
Atmosphere: very pleasant for a quiet dinner and a conversation.
Definitely recommend!!!

I’m not usually a big Vietnamese fan, but I stopped in with some co-​workers for lunch last week and was totally blown-​away.
The food quality was surprisingly good for an ethnic restraunt and the spices were just right, not too hot, but plenty of flavor. The service was prompt and we got in and out in about 40 minutes, the only place that we got held up was in getting the check, which we had to request. They didn’t have ANYONE else in the restraunt while we were there, so that may have contributed to the prompt service. The ambiance was great, we all commented on how the place was decorated.
My only gripe is that it cost us about $ 16 per person, which is towards the higher end of what we expect for lunch.

I came for lunch and they do not appear to have a lunch menu. Thus, I spent $ 17 for lunch, which I felt was quite high. I guess it is a better value during dinner.
The service was good and food came out quickly. I had the lemongrass chicken which came with vegetables. There was a lot of garlic in it. I also ordered hot tea, and it was just plain olé chinese-​esque tea, which cost $ 2.50, and is usually free at restaurants. I was expecting a more interesting flavor. All in all, it is ok, but disappointing in not having a lunch menu.

We ended up ordering (and sharing) the shrimp rolls, Vietnamese Curry and Brown Rice Cooked in Clay Pot. Awww, the shrimp rolls were perfect… nicely and tightly rolled, the greens were actually green and a good amount of vermicelli and shrimp per roll. And the sauce was good with just the right amount of thickness to it (I HATE thin, watery sauce!). I was a bit apprehensive about the size of the Vietnamese Curry dish not being enough for the both of us but fortunately, since we had also gotten the Clay Pot it was enough food for the both of us. The Vietnamese Curry (with chicken, coconut milk, onions, lemongrass, carrots and potatoes) was quite yummy. And the Brown Rice Cooked in Clay Pot (with shrimp, chicken, mushrooms, zucchini, green beans, broccoli and onions) was excellent. There was a bit of sweetness to the rice… interesting, but good.
For dessert, I ended up having the Chocolate Truffle and the hubby had the Fried Banana with ice cream. The Chocolate Truffle was soooo delicious… I tried the hubby’s dessert and it was good as well. My only complaint is that I wished there were a few more of the fried bananas added to the dish… as the 2 bananas that were included were really tiny… like mini-​micro eggrolls :(
I was quite impressed with the décor, such a relaxing environment. This is a nice place, pricey, maybe a once in a great awhile type of place for me to frequent.

Had dinner not so long ago here with friends.
We ordered sea bass, Saigon chicken, shaken beef. The beef was so tender that it melted in your mouth, chicken was flavored for perfection, sea bass is most memorable because I’m still craving for more.

This was my first time visiting Huynh and I didn’t know what to expect. My friend and I arrived here on a Tuesday a little after 5pm. We weren’t sure if it was open or not since no one was inside. I wasn’t sure at first if I wanted to try it, as I’m always a little cautious about empty restaurants, but I’ve been wanting to check the place out since spotting it while driving downtown.
I’m glad we decided to try it out. We had the Shrimp Roll appetizer, which was nicely presented, refreshing and tasty. I ordered the Brown Rice Clay Pot which was incredibly flavorful with just the right amount of veggies, chicken and shrimp. Since I was so busy enjoying my own dinner I completely forgot to ask my friend how hers was, but I’m guessing it was pretty good since the plate was completely empty by the time the waitress came to clean up our table.
The plates were reasonably priced. The atmosphere is clean and serene. The service was not fast nor slow, just the right amount to be able to enjoy my dinner and my company without waiting or rushing. I definitely will be going back to try out more of their specialty dishes.

Wife and I ate there last week. We’ve been there a couple of times over the last few years and enjoyed it each time, but we kind of forgot about the place.
On our last visit we had the shrimp spring rolls for starters. They’re fresh, tasty and a very generous size. One order could be split four ways. Next came the hot & sour soup –wow! The flavors were deep, complex and the pineapple was a really nice contrast to the non-​wussy spicey heat of the dish. If you like beef, you will love the killer Shaking Beef signature dish. The flavors are again rich and complex and the meat is so tender — yumm!
The décor and service were fine with the only draw back being the rather tight seating, but the food makes up for it. I’m glad we have «re-​discovered» this place.

The decore is outstanding in color. The ambiance is comfortable and quiet. A great place to talk softly and be heard. I did not expect the fair to be what it was. Most impressed with the Ga Saigon, a specialty chicken dish that would satisfy any hungry guy ready to dive into a burger joint. Very tasty and filling. The coconut sauce over fish of your choice is another favorite of mine. We sometimes end the meal with «exotic bamba» an ice cream & sherbet ball dipped in white chocolate. But we always end it with a Vietnamese coffee. Rich, creamy and strong.

We have dropped in a few times and have enjoyed the food and service. Some of my favorites are:
Vermicelli Barbecued Chicken, Pork and Prawns with iceberg lettuce, pickled carrots, cucumbers, bean sprouts and fish sauce. Topped with roasted peanuts and cilantro.
Brown Rice Cooked in Clay Pot with shrimp, chicken, mushrooms, zucchini, green beans, broccoli and onions.

Vietnamese Style Coffee is just perfect, each time.

The wife and I were in Walnut Creek for some serious shopping and we noticed that our blood sugar was getting dangerously low… typical shopping arena side affect. What I really wanted was a margarita and some sub-​par mexican food, but there was none to be found. Instead we found thsi place kind of tucked away on a side street. I can’t speak for how authentic it is, but I can say that our dining experience was very pleasant. We stopped in at an odd hour, around 4ish and there were only two other people eating. From my vast experience with dining at restaurant during off-​peak hours, I know that this can be risky.
Our service was prompt and friendly, and I thought the prices were reasonable – about $ 10 per entrée. We split the Vietnamese curry and the vermicelli with beef/​pork, and also an order of Imperial rolls. Everything was delicious and the veggies seemed fresh. We even got a mid afternoon beer from the beer. Overall I would be tempted to give them three stars just for food, but the pleasant atmosphere and good service (especially when we popped in at a weird hour.) Also, they have clean bathrooms. Yay!

I grew up in a house that had salt in the salt shaker AND the pepper shaker. I did not know the difference between red pepper or black pepper until I made a turkey stuffing inedible because I used red pepper instead of black. That was about 22 years ago.
This lead in is to emphasize that I do not do spicy foods very well. Anyway, I love the Vietnamese food from this place. I actually have done carry-​out more often than eaten there, and I recommend either. The interior is calm and peaceful, the place is quiet on quiet, so you tend to leave your stadium voice at home.
My favorite dish here is the curry chicken, which to me is spicy hot. (Remember my roots.) The chicken is not junky leg or thigh meat although dark meat is present, the potatoes are good and they do something to the carrots that make them delicious. And I do not like cooked carrots. Except from this place, they are a dream. I live the shrimp spring rolls too.

Last week Mrs Coot and I decided to fly to Walnut Creek and find a restaurant. We spotted Huynh, a small Vietnamese restaurant. From the outside it was inviting and didn’t disappointed when we went in.
We started by peeking at the wine list. While not extensive, it had a good cross section of some very reasonable wines. We selected a grat bottle of Pinot from Contra Costa County.
For an appetizer we chose a sampler platter of Imperial Rolls, marinated beef (outstanding), prawns, and shrimp rolls. For the main course Mrs Coot had the Cubed Crispy Fish. It must have been good as she didn’t give me a bite. I had the Shaking Beef, cubed fillet with a special sauce served over a bed of baby greens. It too was out of this world. The sauce was extraordinary!
The desert menu had a Fried Banana with Ice cream. Who would have thought that they didn’t have any bananas so my second choice was Vietnamese Coffee and Ice Cream. I thought it woulod be ice cream with a cup of coffee, but I was surprised when I got a portion of ice cream with a side of strong coffee that is poured over the ice cream. Superb!!!
We were so impressed that Huynh will be added to our list of regular places.

My husband and I stopped for lunch one day and are definitely fans!
I had a rice plate and my husband had the Vermicelli. He had a beer and I had a glass of wine.
The service was great, the food was great and the atmosphere was great. We will visit again!

My favorite was the spicy sate and the eggplant and tofu. Both were absolutely delicious. The rice did a fine job of soaking up the tasty sauces from all of the dishes.
The staff are nice and the service was quick. We had no problem getting there around 6:15 and making it to the theater by 7:30. The ambiance is cozy and warm — this would be a great date spot as well.
Including drinks and tip, our total came out to be ~$ 30 each.

Since Vin Pearl closed, the bf and I have been on the search for another restaurant with yummy sea bass. I found Huynh on Unilocal and the bf is so thankful I did. We ordered:
sea bass with coconut sauce: I was skeptical about the peanuts but it all worked. The coconut sauce, the peanuts, the mushrooms, the noodles and perfectly cooked sea bass were definitely an exciting burst of flavors in my mouth. The bf couldn’t stop raving about it and said he had been bored with food for awhile until our visit to Huynh.
ga sai gon: I am not a fan of subtle flavors. I like things that pack a big punch of flavor and the ga sai gon did not disappoint. The bf enjoyed the spinach and lemon pepper dipping sauce.
shaking beef: Although the beef was moist, this didn’t really stand out from any other shaking beef I’ve had.
Our meals were washed down with a lovely lychee martini and lychee mojito and finished off with a yummy chocolate truffle.
The service was very friendly and helpful in the beginning but after they took our order, they kind of forgot about us. The sun was blazing through the door, and they put a divider to block the sun. I am not sure if another table had requested it, but I did appreciate that they were aware of something like that, even though the sun didn’t bother me.
If the bf were rating, he would give it a 5. I can’t wait to go again to try other dishes.

Been here a few times now. Most of the visits have been for lunch, and I’ve been consistently impressed with the delicacy and complexity of their meals. Last night, had catfish in a coconut sauce with vermicelli, peanuts, and spices. Exquisite (although the batter coating on the fish became a bit rubbery after absorbing moisture from the sauce, and required a knife).
My wife had another soup, and remarked on the wonderful light flavors and fresh vegetables.
Not quite full, we splurged on dessert. She had a nondescript ice-​cream like frozen thing that came straight out of the freezer, but I had a wonderful «cappuccino truffle» which was a little larger than a golf ball, split in two, revealing a dark capp center and a light dusting of barely-​noticeable hazlenuts around the lighter chocolate coating. It was on a horizontal plate with the word «huynh» written in chocolate sauce across its surface. Delicious and gorgeous.
Great place to take someone to impress.

So I have a big snobby chip on my shoulder about «the WC» — which is very glass house of me, since I live in Marin — but I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty Vietnamese food of Huynh.
Four of us ordered «for the table» — so we tried the Taste of Huynh appetizer platter, all of which was super tasty — a few different types of rolls with chicken salad in the middle. Yum!
For dinner, we got 4 plates: green papaya salad (yum, though I added WAY too much red chili sauce –ouch), the pan-​fried fish with ginger (crispy and tasty), the coconut fish with vermicelli (also tasty, though a little weird to have a big piece of fish covered in little noodles), and the chicken satay (sweet peanut sauce may be a little too sweet, but it was excellent on rice and if you added some chili sauce, yum!).
I did think the portions were a little small for the price — but this is supposed to be haute cuisine vietnamese, not strip mall vietnamese, so okay. And there’s nice décor & table ware too — intimate and cozy and definitely a step up.
Now, I probably won’t go back to WC just for this, but if I were dragged back thru the tunnel, I’d consider eating here!

My husband and I have been frequenting Huynh’s lately after a movie and really enjoying the food and ambiance. So recently on a lunch outing with my girlfriend, we were downtown WC and starving. There are so many choices in WC but Huynh’s came to mind since she hadn’t been there and I knew she’d love it.
Their lunch menu does have some of the same favs at the evening one so I knew what to steer her to and we decided to share. We ordered the Sea Bass and Brown Rice Clay Pot. The Sea Bass is around $ 20 but worth every mouth watering penny!!! The sauce was divine and the fish was flakey and perfect, we had a side order of saffron rice.
The Brown Clay Pot Rice (one of my favs) is filled with chicken and shrimp and lots of fresh veggies on top of a brown rice cooked with soy in a pot. All steamy hot and fresh and healthy at the same time wow what a concept!
We left feeling satisfied and very full and if you have room order one of those sweet vietnamese coffees, we were on a time constraint so didn’t have time to wait for it to drip.
All in all another stellar meal and my girlfriend couldn’t wait to bring her husband back for dinner for some of that Sea Bass. Definitely a hidden gem in WC.
