History

Established in 1951.

Dr. George Hurd started Walnut Creek Optometry Group in 1951. In 1997, Dr. Hurd sold the practice to Dr. Bach-​Kim Nguyen, a graduate from University Berkeley Optometry School. Dr. Nguyen and her associates continue Dr. Hurd’s tradition of serving Walnut Creek. Besides giving comprehensive eye examination and offering varieties of designer frames and affordable frames, we also do diabetic and hypertensive eye exam. We diagnosis and treat eye diseases such as conjunctivitis and dry eyes. We fit all types of contact lenses: soft, rigid gas permeable, toric soft, multifocal soft, and multifocal RGP contact lenses. We fit contact lenses for patients who are 6 years– old to 99 years-​young. We also do visual efficiency examination and provide vision therapy for children who have vision related learning problems. Dr. Bach-​Kim Nguyen was a refugee who came from Vietnam to the US at the age of 23. She was alone, spoke no English, had one big dream: to be come a medical doctor. After 13 years of hard work and strong determination, she graduated from UC Berkeley Optometry School with Doctor of Optometry Degree. Dr. Nguyen is very sensitive to patients’ need. She listens and does her best to provide solution. She is warm and truly cares for her patients and loves her work.

Dr. Nguyen has three very good staff members who work hard and care for patients as much as she does.

Dr. Kim is very good at what she does. She gave me glasses that I liked and I can now see so much better both reading and for long distance. It’s too bad though, that I always end up paying way more than I expect. I have double vision coverage… I also have double dental ins… And I never have to pay for anything… Fillings, office visits, night bite gaurd… Makes me wonder…

The optometrist was very friendly. She was very thorough. The office is very small but they seemed to be up to date in their practice as far as technology. My only complaint was the choices of glasses they had for men. I walked out of the office with a pair of glasses I really didn’t like.

I just took my 12 year old daughter, who has special needs, into see Dr. Nguyen and I couldn’t have been more pleased. She was so caring and knew how to work with my daughter to complete the eye exam. I could see how she went the extra steps to make sure she was interpreting my daughters responses correctly and was also diligent in asking me lots of questions to get her background. In the end, she said we can continue with our current prescription based on what she got and didn’t push us to get any new glasses (unlike many other offices). I will be back.

Could it be as simple as needing Vision Therapy? When your child is reading, if they tilt their head or cover an eye, or simply seems not able to be able to focus, I recommend checking into whether or not your child is struggling with «tracking» while reading. Or perhaps they have a limited field of vision and can see the teacher, but miss the homework written in the margin of the wipe board.
Such simple stuff, right? Wrong. The vision tests administered by school checks only for the basics. Educators look for these other signs, yet they may not know who to refer students to for further evaluation. We were referred to specialist Dr. Bach-​Kim Nguyen of Walnut Creek Optometry Group for special eye therapy. She uses a number of tools for evaluation, but most impressive was a set of specialized goggles that tracks the students reading. Dr. Nguyen showed me on the monitor the results, which displayed the reading text and a little red light/​tracking ball which can determine if your child is skipping words or entire paragraphs! No wonder reading is difficult or boring for some if they skip paragraphs and don’t get the concepts of the document!
The eye therapy worked wonders and we are thrilled! Hopefully this information might be able to help others.

Went here for the first time this week. Dr Nguyen is fantastic. I was able to do a late appointment so didn’t have to miss work. They have a great selection of glasses, and much to my surprise had a lot of frames for those of us with large heads.

Trust is not a word I would use for this place. I went in recently because I needed to get a prescription to purchase eye glasses. I only buy online so I can get my cash back rewards. I repeatedly said I wanted only the basic exam that costs me $ 25 co-​pay with my insurance. It’s a basic exam to get a prescription. However, in the end I was charged $ 90 for something that wasn’t even necessary. She even said to me that with the basic exam she only gets $ 15 from the insurance. That is not MY problem. I pay my hard earned money every month to insurance so that in this situation I only have to pay a $ 25 co-​pay for my exam.
I do not appreciate the act of sneaking in other things to try to make more money off of me. I also felt like I was being sold the whole time even though I kept repeating that I buy my contacts and lenses online. Trust is not a word I would describe this place. Dishonesty and robbery would be.
In two years, I will need to get a prescription again and I will not return here. If the $ 15 payment from the insurance company isn’t enough, then perhaps they shouldn’t have picked this field of work. But robbing from hard working individuals is definitely not fair or cool. Especially when I repeated numerous times exactly what I was there for.

I met Dr. Nguyen on a Lions mission trip to provide eye care and glasses to the needy in Navolato, Mexico. Since I’m currently an optometry student, she graciously invited me to come shadow her at her practice. I have to say it was a great experience to see how caring she is toward her patients– she genuinely tries to find the best solutions to her patient’s problems. It was nice to see a practice run with patient care as the top priority.

My entire family has been seeing Dr. Nguyen for many years. I just sort of picked her out of the telephone book, but I consider myself very lucky that I found her. I have a very unusual problem that had never been corrected properly by any other eye doctor, optometrist or ophthalmologist. She had a very simple solution to my problem and it has worked wonderfully. She has been able to restore the sight in one of my eyes from 20⁄200 to 20⁄40.
Although the office is small, they have a wonderful selection of frames and are very helpful in assisting with selection. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and they know us when we come in or call. Dr. Nguyen has a wonderful, friendly personality and she always remembers us and even recalls specific events from past visits. She always makes me feel comfortable and she spends a great deal of time with her patients.
I have recommended Dr. Nguyen to many people. I handle Human Resources at my job so I am often asked for recommendations. She is one doctor that I will always feel comfortable recommending.

I would like to say that I really enjoyed meeting this doctor. Dr. Nguyen is very professional and nice. I went to her to figure out a problem I was having with dizziness and my vision’s. It was a process of elimination for me. I had all the tests done and she was very helpful in explaining how the tests work. After the tests I found out that I have really good vision. I almost wish I had an eye problem so that I could have her as my doctor. ;-)
I have a PPO insurance and it does not cover vision however it allowed me a discount. Dr. Nguyen’s staff explained in advance the tests that were going to be ran and how much it would cost me. When I paid at the end, there were no extra fees.
The only reason I’m not giving 5 stars is because it was just one visit and 5 stars to me means you have been there more then once and can count on it being excellent everytime. ;-)

Dr, Nguyen has been my eye doctor for many years now. I trust her knowledge, experience, advice, and wisdom. She remembers exactly who I am every time I come in the office, and asks me how I’m doing based on the last conversation we held. That’s pretty amazing.
The staff is helpful and kind. They are accommodating regarding schedules, always looking to see how they can work you into the day if they can.
Great frames, with kind but honest advice on how you look in them if you want. :)

Wow. Dr. Nguyen is the best you can get. I live in the Bay Area now and needed to get some eyeglasses so I just looked up doctors who accepted my insurance. I called her office and her staff immediately took down my information, set up an appointment for the same day, and contacted me 5 minutes later with my coverage details. When I arrived I waited only long enough to fill out my new patient information and then I was in the back having tests run. When Dr. Nguyen came in she was laughing and cracking jokes. She treated me like a life long friend or family member. After the tests were done SHE brought me to the front, SHE helped me pick out glasses for my face shape, SHE fitted them and SHE calculated my costs for me. I’ve never EVER had a doctor take that much time to make sure I was as good as possible. The BEST! I can’t wait for my follow up in a week

Dr. Nguyen is wonderful, really personable, intelligent, and I always feel like I’m well taken care of. This is probably why I haven’t changed eye doctors since I moved to San Jose, and have been driving to Walnut Creek for my appointments every year.
When I had LASIK a few years back, I was in the office a lot, and ended up meeting several of the other Optometrists in the office as well. They are all friendly, professional, caring, just what you want.
Great selection of frames. Dr. Nguyen always gives you an honest opinion of how you look in the glasses too, which is nice.
