Second time coming here and I really think they offer a high quality food and the prices are fair while not cheap. The atmosphere is casual and it’s a fast food type of place. I have seen this establishment on TV before which is why I wanted to check it out and I’m glad I did.

I went into this place for the first time last week and have already revisited multiple times. The service is timely and the food is amazing. I’m thinking at least once a week for the duration of my time here.

This was my favorite BBQ place the first two times I ate here until I ordered green beans which were clearly from a can. The mac and cheese isn’t creamy which is not my style. The mashed potatoes are the one side that I like but you can tell there’s filler. The reason I stopped going is because I ordered the chicken pulled sandwich and with one of my last bites I almost swallowed a very large thin bone that could of really hurt me not to mention it’s disgusting. I will definitely not be going back there.

9⁄10 I frequent Whitners BBQ every Friday on my lunch. Their menu is expansive, the staff is always friendly, and the food is fantastic. I get the same thing almost every time, Honey-Q Smoked turkey sandwich, Collard Greens, and Dirty Rice(A MUSTTRY). Whitners never disappoints, and always seems to be a little busy. Their sweet tea is perfect, and their signature hot sauce’s are great. They were even featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners Drive-In’s and Dives. Way to go Whitners!

After seeing all of these positive review, I am positive I should be known as a flavor-nazi or food snob. My wife and I have roots in NC, as such, we tend to be in and out of NC pretty and eat NCBBQ regularly. We have come across several restaurants that serve NC style barbecue in VA as well, but have been pretty consistently dissatisfied… and Whitner’s was no exception! The baked beans were not sweet, as can be expected from almost every style of baked beans(brown sugar and molasses must be too expensive nowadays! lol). We both had the pulled pork NC style BBQ, which didn’t have the classic vinegary flavor. In fact, it tasted like the meat was cooked with no seasonings whatsoever. I had to add«NC» vinegar-based sauce to my sandwich, which barely gave it a lift taste-wise. In addition, it is sad to say that some of the BEST parts of our meals were the sides. Those being the coleslaw and the green beans. I may make a second trip, as the food wasn’t «nasty», but it won’t be for NCBBQ!

Literally the ONLY place since I have left Texas that I will order brisket from … As a matter of fact, it’s the only thing I have ordered because it’s just that damned good.

Great place I ate the Kc burnt ends sandwich with green beans and baked beans and everything was delicious. The staff was very friendly and efficient. The facility was very clean as well. The menu is large and the prices are very reasonable. Most definitely will recommend this place to my friends and I will be returning in the near future.

Great BBQ! There food is consistently good. They have a variety of pork and chicken to choose. There are a lot of places in VB to get BBQ, but this is the I have found so far. Not a lot of seating so if you are not doing take out, get there early or go after peak hours.

Since we moved to virginia a year ago my husband had been going on and on about this place. I’ve been able to avoid going since the first mention but this time I had no reason to not go, so we went. The menu is written on the wall and easily understood. I went for the pulled chicken sandwich with potato salad and cornbread as sides. Husband sent for brisket with two sides i can’t remember. First thought was that the chicken was very smokey, shouldn’t have been a surprise, being that it was a bbq place hah. Hubby obviously loved his food. I’m more meh, because I don’t like bbq. All in all, for a bbq lover it’s a great place with great prices. I can’t give stars for what other people think tho so … 4 it is.

Ehh… well…okay .So I wasn’t expecting too much for this BBQ joint considering the reviews but hey I needed to know for myself. It smelled great when I walked in. I looked over to my right and a big chalk board wall displayed the menu. Whoa!!! It was overwhelming as the menu is really crammed up there. Wait a min… There’s another board on the floor next to the register! Ok now it got real. So… Heck I just went for the Gumbo! I know. I know. gumbo at a BBQ place? Well it was pretty good. Made with shredded Turkey, sausage and shrimp over rice. The color of the Gumbo was there and the hint of flavor of gumbo too. Not a strong gumbo flavor but I guess it will do. Hubby got the slice brisket platter and the meat was tender. Also, a side of corn mixed with black eye peas was pretty descent. Cornbread was somewhat rubbery tho not moist at all. It needed butter or something. Overall, it was an ok meal but not the best BBQ. It didn’t have that strong BBQ flavor.

Really enjoyed this place! Had the trio meat platter with brisket, burnt end, and pulled chicken. Really enjoyed all three with my favorite being the burnt ends! Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes w/gravy also tasty. Would recommend and will be going back again!

One of my favorite BBQ joints in the area. They have a ton of food for very little and all of it is AMAZINGLY delicious!!! I usually get some sort of pulled meat sandwich and smother it with North Carolina BBQ sauce. The brisket chili is delicious-brisket is great-pulled pork is great-pulled chicken is great… I guess I just really like this place!

Oh baby! AUTHENTIC, smoked on site BBQ. I thought I had lost that when I left NC. This is very good BBQ. Got the pulled pork and wet ribs. The ribs fell off the bone. The pulled pork was moist with peices of yummy«skin» mixed in. It was well picked with very little fat or grissel and coarse chopped. Loved the baked beans cooked with molasses and brown sugar. The potato salad is red skin and delicious. My only complaint was the cornbread was tough and chewy with lots of room for improvement. Establishment was clean with a quaint country air. Best of all, the lemonade is real and all you can drink. Will definitely be back!

Came in yesterday with my fella after running some errands & we were starving. The wonderful aroma of smoked meats hits you as soon you walk in. We both ordered a platter of pulled pork & burnt ends. It came with two sides & a delicious square of corn bread. I chose their Mac & cheese(which was one of their sides of the day) and collard greens. My fiancé ordered their baked beans & collards. While we waited for our food to come up we filled our cups, sweet tea for me :-), & checked out their assortment of sauces & vinegars. I love that they also have honey & butter packs ready for the corn bread. Our food was served up quickly & the don’t skimp on the portions! I’ll be having my leftovers for dinner tonight. The meats were delish, the collards were okay, but my favorite was their mac & cheese! That my friends was eaten whole in about 30 seconds. I’ll definitely come back when I need my BBQ fix in Lynnhaven. It’s a little on the higher side at $ 33 for two at lunch, but I always say that good BBQ is a labor of love, so it’s worth it.

Good job with the catering I had with them today. I didn’t order, but my office neighbors did. There’s no better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with some good ol’ barbecue. The regulars of a barbecue lunch were present: beans, potato salad, pickles pulled pork and pulled beef. A few extras were in the house, cookies and brownies. I only had three of their big ass cookies. Five stars for the desserts. I found the barbecue fixings to be good, not great. A few bites of the pork were dry. The pickles were a nice surprise though. Overall, not to shabby.

The highlights of our meals were the famous Food network DDD Mr. Whitner’s turkey sandwich and the KC burned ends. The turkey meat was moist and juicy. It was the best turkey meat sandwich my husband and I have had in our lives. We also sampled the St-Louis cut ribs with dry rub and the North Carolina pulled pork. The best side was the mashed potatoes. We also tried the baked beans, corn bread, and green beans. The décor looked like a vintage canteen. The restrooms were clean. It was free and easy to park. The service was fine.

Quick service and clean spot. Not to big, room for about 30 peps. They have a decent menu. Décor is cool, a bit of a throwback. We got a full slab of ribs to go(stand by for the ruling) KC burnt ends, a big portion and not to much fat on them(pretty good) and pit bull dog which has pulled pork, standard hot dog and bun with like a vinegar and honey sauce on it(ok). The ribs were average, not enough for a return visit. A bit dry and not really juicy. Lowered rating to 2 stars due to ribs.

Where to start? I found this place on DDD and had to give them a try on my vacation to VA Beach. First impression upon pulling up to the place is how small it is. I won’t lie, I was nervous. But when I walked in… Dear God in heaven the smell just blew me away. If I could have just said«Put that smell in my mouth please» I would have, but I didn’t want any more crazy looks. It was bad enough I was just standing there inhaling deeply with my eyes closed like some kind of perfumier. Ok, snap out of it. It’s time to order. The chalkboard menu is comprehensive but not overwhelming. The person who took our order was kind and helped us with our selections. Before sitting, we stop to get our drinks at the fountain. What’s this I see at the tea station? Plain tea, sweet tea, and lemonade with squirt bottles of lemon juice and simple syrup. Do these people know me? How I love to customize my tea with just the right amount of lemonade and sweetness? This was heaven. Speaking of heave, our number was just called and our plates were piled high with meat and delicious sides. My burnt ends and pulled pork were perfection. The mashed potatoes were so flavorful. The collard greens were tender, but not as well seasoned as I used to. All in all, this was a fantastic experience and I’m with Guy, the food was great. Next time I come to Virginia Beach, I will make a point to come here again.

Do they live up to the hype? I’m not really sure. I’m gonna have to join the barrage of other 2ish star reviews on this one. I ordered the burnt ends plate with cole slaw and a special potato mash they had(baked mashed potatoes with chili sauce in it). The sides were real good, but we’re here for the BBQ, right? Maybe I’m just not a true fan of BBQ. Well, I know I’m not… especially not burnt ends considering how much I preach about mid-rare steak and mooing and all. I wanted to give it a try though based on the words of Guy Fieri and the BF. So, the burnt ends were pretty burnt and tough. Obviously they should be burnt but are they supposed to be tough? I really don’t know. All I know was I didn’t like. Everyone else gobbled up their food. They all had pulled pork. So my recommendation is stick with the pork.

Despite the mixed reviews I gave it a try. Now I know why there are mixed reviews as it’s not very good. This isn’t a place for someone who has had good BBQ before as you’ll leave disappointed. 1) Food lacks flavor without sauce(no smokiness at all, flavor only comes from the sauce they lather on it). I had pulled pork and burnt end combo. Pulled pork tasted watery and burnt ends tasted like an over seasoned/sauced pot roast. I’m pretty confident their pulled pork comes in a vacuum sealed bag and they hear it up. 2) Sides were luke warm and tasted processed(I had dirty rice and Mac & Cheese). Dirty rice was terrible and Mac & Cheese was cold and dry. 3) Sandwich rolls were as a few mentioned, too dense and bulky. They tasted very cheap and I took about two bites before removing the meat and tossing the bread. 4) Cornbread was average but was cold which was a common theme for everything but the meat. Will I be back, absolutely NOT. Food wasn’t worth the $ 16 I paid for it.
