Stopped in for lunch today and I was pleasantly surprised. I had a Carolina dog with coleslaw and chili. The chili was good not sure what I think of the slaw yet. It was grated very fine I like coleslaw to have a crunch even if it is going on a hot dog. Still it was good. Also I tried the coney dog that was supposed to be chili and cheese. It came to the table with chili only no cheese the place was super busy so I was not going to complain it was still good and I can try again next time I am in. Fried Mac and Cheese was okay but not great it was frozen, but most places use this so no big deal. Sweet tea was good and I know my Granny would have loved it, but I will ask for a half and half next time it was a little to sweet for me. Overall I enjoyed it and will return the food was good and at a good price so it is worth going back to.

If your looking for food made from scratch. They do some of that, but sides like French fries and fried okra are frozen. But I come here for the hot dogs. They actually serve what I call Carolina dogs. Chilli w/o beans, Cole slaw, onions and yellow mustard. Nothing less, nothing more. For a darn cheap price! The décor is all over the place, country, pigs all over the place due to the fact they serve Bar-b-que. And we can’t forget about the Indian statue sitting in a chair as you walk into the place.

Atmospheric is country and the food comes fast. My kids are teens and picky but love it and I zip in for lunch near work. Try the specials and the Barbeque yum

This place is sooooooo great! My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place last Saturday and were truly impressed. Not only was the food amazing and the prices cheap, but the service was phenomenal! The ladies that were working that day were friendly and attentive. DEFINITELY go to this place – you won’t be disappointed!

I don’t know if I’d say that this is the best barbecue in Virginia, but it is decent if a little heavy on the sauces. I had something with chopped BBQ chicken which came with skinny fries. My brother made the better choice for one of their«fat boy» cheeseburgers and it looked way better than mine. Next time I’m here, I’ll have a namesake Donkey Dawg as the one at the next table looked better.

Take your pick of chopped or pulled, this is the place to get the best barbecue in Virginia! Fresh-smoked barbecue, yummy sauces, fresh homemade slaw, and a wide variety of other menu items! Donkey Dawg’s is always my very first stop when I return to Virginia Beach! Now I’m craving barbecue… Will always return, and would highly recommend.

Just like everyone else, I drove past this place for a solid year before deciding to venture inside on a whim. The décor is very unique(re: Redneck Heaven) but remains clean, quirky and fun. Staff was very friendly and attentive and food was quick to come out. I had a dog all the way with cheese and a pulled pork sandwich. The dog was great and the chili is some of the better I’ve had in the area. The pulled pork was a pleasant surprise. Tender, juicy, and with a great smoke flavor. I later discovered they smoke everything out back! They have a homemade hot sauce that reminds me of Doumar’s special sauce — spicy and delicious! And to drive everything home, salty roasted peanuts(complimentary) and SUPER sweet tea — just how it should be! Your kids will get a kick out of this place and you’ll LOVE the food. They also have a second room with more seating for parties.

Let me start off by saying I’m from south Mississippi, and a bit of a BBQ snob. I decided to go here based on the reviews and it’s vicinity from our hotel. I saw the place and was like oh no, what did I get myself into. But being the dedicated person I am, pressed on. The inside is awesome. It’s like a redneck(respectfully) heaven. From a pig shaped chalkboard hanging from a deer head, to Mason jars attached to candle sticks as wine glasses. In all my travels, the best way to judge a BBQ place is by their sweet tea. If it’s bad, the rest is probably bad. Being said, the sweet tea was the . The waitress was incredibly friendly and was very attentive and made us feel like we were regulars. Brought us drinks very quickly after ordering and checked back often, but not the overly annoying checked back often. My fiancé and I got the bacon cheeseburger and the BBQ pulled pork sandwhich. The BBQ pulled pork was simply heaven in my mouth. The slaw added a great texture and contrast to the BBQ. The bacon cheeseburger was good, but the patty seemed to be of the frozen variety. I could be wrong though. Either way the cheeseburger was still great. Wasn’t the cheap run of the mill crunchy bacon that seemingly graces all other bacon cheeseburgers. Overall, if highly recommend this place. Good prices for great food, great service and great atmosphere!

I’m from Ohio so I may be a bit biased to coney/chili dogs(Cincinnati is known for chili dogs– has the best ones!!) either way, I was disappointed. I ordered an All the Way Donkey Dawg with cheese and it was just ok. My boyfriend enjoyed his cheeseburger but it was definitely made from a frozen patty. I enjoyed the atmosphere though and the staff was very friendly. The free Nuts are amazing tho. So yummy !

I too have driven by a million times, but chef Dave told me I had to go. Got chopped bar b q, collards, fried okra, it was all very good. Old dude I took with me, also a first timer, went and got his wife… they went back for dinner. Now hired to cater their housewarming party.

Loved the reception when we entered. The waitress was spot on, except my coffee cup emptied. Growing up in the north I decided to try the Carolina Burger for a little something different and subbed out fries for veggie soup. My complaint is a matter of taste. Everything is so stinkin’ sweet in the south. Even the soup had a sugary flare. Perhaps my personality would sweeten up if I fueled myself with saccharine. My fellow diners were all up in the flavor and had no complaints. I subtracted a star, not because of my different palate, but because half of our table got their food and the other half had to wait a little bit. It is always an awkward situation. Should I eat or should I wait. What about just a small bite? Maybe if I offer some of my fries I won’t feel so guilty partaking…

«The Virginia Pilot» review was spot on. The pulled pork ‘cue was delicious, especially if you like bark(which I do). The South Carolina-style mustard sauce was excellent. Cole Shaw was clean and fresh, not drowning in shaw sauce. The service was excellent and quick. The owner came over to check on us which I thought was a nice touch. Our one complaint, the fries my wife had and my fried okra came from a frozen bag. Strongly recommend«Da Dawgs» drop the frozen stuff and offer fewer but fresh farm-to-table sides to go with their great pork.

Really good BBQ and loved the cole slaw! And the staff was really friendly. But the best part is they are locally owned.

Went after the glowing report in the VA Pilot. It was undeserved. 1. The large sandwiches are not 8 oz as the Pilot article states. A large chopped pork was maybe 4 oz, large pulled pork MAYBE6 oz. 2. Chopped pork rates a ZERO. Greasy, finely minced(not«chopped»), oddly flavorless. 3. Pulled pork much better. 4. Slaw mediocre. 5. Service nice, friendly. I wanted to like the place more but the food did not warrant it. It’s OK. Lower your expectations. Get the pulled pork. Slaw on the side so you can decide for yourself.

Okay, we were not attracted to this establishment from the street. They need an outside makeover, but this family owned restaurant with a bar on the side knows BBQ and the stuff that Southern Cooking is all about. Yes, there is a strange American Indian doll at the front entrance. Not sure what that is about, but the rest of the wild stuff like taxidermy probably indicates pride in a galaxy far, far, away. Enough said. We ate, drank, and took home another pound of that awesome pulled pork BBQ for later. You can’t do that at home for the same price. If you vacation in Virginia Beach, don’t miss this funky place. Come and eat, then stop on Oceana Blvd and watch the jets soar. The sound of Freedom. You won’t be disappointed.

I’ve probably driven by this place a million times and chuckled while reading the sign, Donkey Dawgs, seriously?! I’ve never met anyone who went inside so I had to try it when I finally got a decent lunch break on a Friday. When I walked into this place I felt like I was transported to a diner out in the dusty plains of Arizona. The décor of the establishment has taxidermy from the moment you enter and also has an extremely creepy life sized American Indian statue/doll sitting on the table… weird yes, but I love weird! When I stepped up to the lunch counter I was promptly greeted and so I asked for a to go menu. I ordered up the cheeseburger w/bacon, fried egg and grilled onions(I don’t remember the title of the sandwich). Although my experience and wait here was short, I did manage to catch up on some farm gossip that I could eavesdrop in on from a couple of farmers right next to me, juicy stuff! All in all, I like Donkey Dawgs. The burger was pretty awesome but I wish I would have ordered the hot dog that the establishment is named after(maybe next time). If you pass by, stop in, you won’t forget the place.
