Description

Specialties

The soul of Venice – home to artists, foodies, musicians, families, and visitors. Award-winning cuisine, fine art, live jazz. It all happens here!

Friendly, spacious and airy, Hal’s features distinctive, seasonal American cuisine prepared to perfection, specialty cocktails and a top-notch wine list.

Hal’s showcases paintings, sculpture, and photography by local and internationally known artists, and live jazz by local jazz greats, Sunday and Monday nights.

History

Established in 1987.

The first restaurant on Abbot Kinney Blvd. – now called «the coolest street in America» by GQ Magazine – Hal’s Bar & Grill has become THE perennial Venice neighborhood hang-out.

Originally called the Merchant of Venice, where you could have a sandwich and buy the chair you were sitting on, Don Novack and his wife and business partner Linda Novack, teamed up with Hal Frederick, who’d been working at West Beach Café. They formed a partnership, and created Hal’s Bar & Grill, re-building it from the ground up into the soulful, still bohemian, Venice landmark it has become.

Meet the Business Owner

Don-Linda N and Hal F.

Business Owner

Actively involved in building and running Hal’s for over 26 years, Don was a successful banker and property developer, with no restaurant experience when he, his wife, Linda, and Hal first teamed up. Known unofficially as the «Ambassador of Abbot Kinney», Don is a long-time, active member of the Venice Chamber of Commerce, the Abbot Kinney Merchants Association, and has been involved with and honored by the Venice community numerous times through the years.

Linda’s smarts, personality, and organizational skills have kept the business humming. Her personal touch is reflected in every aspect of the restaurant.

Hal brought his name, restaurant experience, relationships with the community, supreme warmth and good taste to the venture, and staked out a claim to delight the eclectic local community and visitors alike – creating a vibe that delicately balances the trendy, upscale changes on Abbot Kinney with Venice Beach bohemian.
